js2
That doesn't mean he's going to sign there, though, does it? He can still decide to go to the market and Calgary would lose Leopold and the pick for nothing.
bailey1
Holy crap... Imagine if a deal goes through. Boumeester - Phaneuf
westernleafsfan
Holy crap... Imagine if a deal goes through. Boumeester - Phaneuf does this mean we could've gotten him for say negotiation rights to komisarek and a 3rd rounder? if so.. then argh!! bg would've looked like a fool if jbo wouldn't have signed here and we lost komisarek but on the other hand you have to gamble to win so i hope he has something up his sleeve!! DA_Champion
Calgary has been draining the farm. They want to win before Iginla becomes too old and their window of opportunity closes. It may have already.
RicochetII
It's basically a third for Bouwmeester's rights. Leopold's not under contract for next season yet either.
Rocket-1
I've met Bouwmeester during the all star game and i could have sworn the man was a slow adult. So it's no big deal to me if he signs anywhere else but here. And by the way Ricochet Max Pacioretty is 6 foot 1 not 6'

flamesgal1
He is signed and will likely play with reger...I can now see Calgary turning around and trading Pheneuf to Ottawa for Heatly
babinator77
wow. signed for five years. totally manageable. i can only hope he didn't want to come to mtl...
tmash
Better deal than I was expecting, only 5 years at a reasonable cap hit for a player of his calibre.
mortwinkler
Good for Calgary, bad for the teams that have to play them frequently throughout the season. How is it that Calgary lands all these top notch players? They always seem to do well at trade deadline as well as during the FA Frenzy.
gracie12
Better deal than I was expecting, only 5 years at a reasonable cap hit for a player of his calibre. I think the thing about bouwmeester is that he's always been touted as "great" but in reality, so far he's only been "good" or at least "very good" I mean dont get me wrong - id take a chance on him - especially at that contract - but he's also not a sure thing. Until last year, his points went down every year since 05-06 season - and even last year he still scored less than he had 4 years ago. He's got all the skills to make him a 65+ pt defensman, with a decent defensive game, sound positioning & great transitional game, but he's also never quite delivered on the offensive side. Heck, he only scored 9 more points than Hamrlik last year. Anyway, I do think he makes Calgary's defense probably the best in the league now (providing last season was an aberration for phaneuf and he will bounce back this year) and they got a good deal. It will be interesting to see if Bouwmeester can "take it to the next level" as so many have predicted for the past 7 seasons, but has yet to happen... mortwinkler
But, they too, never win the Cup. True, but they have notably good players. Something we tend to lack all the time, then they make some big signings. I'm jealous of the Flames...

koreysecord1992
A Phaneuf/Bouwmeester combo will be interesting to watch. Two young guys locked up for the near future should make for a solid core. Unfortunately, it may limit the amount of cash the Flames can spend on the second half of the top 4 in the coming years.
