QbGamer
His salary last season was 4.5 million He has since signed a 1 year deal with the pens for 2 million, 1 season. Pretty BIG discount if you ask me. We need some players to step up and take huge discounts for us I know your all thinking hes older and didnt do much on the Islanders last season, but the Islanders were the worst team ever .... He then goes to pitsburg and helps them win a cup... 2 million is a steal of a deal,.. Good Job Pens
Max-Hab-Fan
It's easier to take a discount after you won the Cup. We're not in that position, plus we have more taxes, higher expectations, and tons of pressure. But it would be nice if someone would give Bob a discount. roy_133
Yeah, you get discounts when you win/contend for Cups, not when you back into 8th, get swept and have to deal with all the off ice crap.
Rocket-1
I'm not surprised for a bit. Good for him, he automatically has a chance to win it again next year.
Flunky
Hopefully his salary (discount) will be used as a league-wide yardstick to set the standard for future veteran signings. I'll bet all the other old farts are pissed at Guerin for coming so cheap. Way to go Billy and way to go Pittsburgh.
tmash
Hopefully his salary (discount) will be used as a league-wide yardstick to set the standard for future veteran signings. Unlikely. With the salary cap, salary "standards" are essentially irrelevant. The only standards being set are for NMCs and length of contract. Since each season 54% of revenues go to player salaries, there is really no such thing as standards of salary. All older guys taking less would do is lead to star players making more. So now you have teams that need to spend money somewhere and now that star players are making more money, it may make a lot of sense to offer an older player 5 million instead. So it's really circular, since any group of players (veterans, or whatever) taking less money it means another group will make more. This other group making more will then make the original group a more attractive option, thus increasing what this group makes since they will have more demand for their services. If anything, in theory Guerin has made veterans slightly more expensive in the long run (although in practice this effect is neglible) since more money can now go to star players and veterans will be more attractive. So salary standards are irrelevant as long as there is a hard cap. Not that player's won't ever be compared, but it has no real effect.
