Trade: Higgins To Rangers For Gomez

I'm honestly not disappointed with the trade itself, I honestly think it was a pretty fair deal I don't see why everyone is so upset about McDonagh being traded since very few people have even seen him perform combined with the fact that we have a bunch of good defence prospects. Overall though I don't think Gomez fills our specific needs though, I don't think it's fair that everyone is calling for Gainey's head until we see the results (or lack of) that comes from this trade. I would've much preferred Lecavalier but obviously trading for him was just not possible whether it be the owner or Lecavalier himself that nixed the trade.

Higgins W

McDonagh D

Valentenko D

Janik D

vs

Gomez C

Pyatt C

Busto D

I try to see this trade under a good light :

Valentenko was gone to Russia, most probably for good, and Janik, like Busto, are throw ins...

Gomez is a better player than Higgins, overpaid, yes, but still, a better player, so we improve.

This leaves McDonagh and Pyatt.

Potential 1st pairing D without a contract, years away from the NHL vs potential 2nd centreman, 3rd centreman (small one again), but more developped than McDonagh... We lose on that front.

Basically, we can say that Higgins + a top prospect got us a fringe first line centre, not really that much better than Saku, but younger, faster and healthier.

I guess it is not all.

Gainey can do a bad move and send us on a quest for Taylor Hall.

Or he can use Gomez's arrival as a promise of improvement to draw a solid winger to Montreal, and, if he succeeds, improve us with this second acquisition.

In any case, I am on the fence about this trade.

I don't like Scott Gomez, but he's one of ours now, and I'll get to like him over time.

What does this mean however : NO VINCENT LECAVALIER, once and FOR ALL.

Official trade from TSN:

The Canadiens acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defencemen Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.

Most may think that this trade is horrible but lets look at it this way:

1) Valentenko might never play in the NHL ever, he might stay in Russia. I think Gainey may have known this.

2) Janik? Who cares. 6th defenseman at best.

3) Higgins. Well, what can you say? Even though he was often injured, he still had a nose for the net. Perhaps he will be very affordable and flourish in New York. In fact I wouldn't be surprised.

4) And Ryan M. God, should have never given this up.

So basically, Ryan and Chris for Scott.

I hope for Gainey's sake this works out.

At least Josh Gorges wasn't involved in the trade.

Are you kidding? Why in the hell would TB trade a superstar center for a good center with a really similar contract. If Lecavalier has no more purpose in Tampa, so would Gomez.

We Can give them 1st rounders and Gomez for vinny. They'll shed a 3million in salary used

Strange trade, but it could work out ok. It depends on how Gomez performs and how the prospects the Habs traded perform. The Habs better get some good wingers to play with Gomez.

it won't work out!

player that is paid 7.3m per year should produce at least 90 points every year of his contract! gomez scored 84 ONCE in nine years!

No matter what team is in front of me I will bleed BLEU BLANC ROUGE!!!!

Welcome to the HABS Scott. When the fans were all bashing the signing of Robert Lang I stayed positive and it was well worth it.

May you bring something others couldn't.

I hate losing McDonaugh in the trade but Im not the one making the calls. im a fasn and a fan supports his team so ...

GO! HABS! GO!

This couldn't wait until we see what could have happened tomorrow? And losing McDonagh! I'm not sure how much I like that move... Gomez is coming off an atrocious season in New York and has a $7.3 million cap hit until the end of 2013-2014... Seriously, I am so confused by this move.

Once you realise Gainey is insane, it becomes easier to understand. Montreal was just sent back 5 years in a second.

FIRE GAINEY NOW!!!!!!!!

when does gomez make an impact? he couldn't even play on the first line on the team that paid him $8mil. he is a second line center at best, pretty much the same productivity as plekanec.

on the positive side, gomez pre-lockout was one of the top assist men in the NHL, but he is only good when he has a top sniper to play along side him.

higgins wanted to be traded away anyway and would not have signed for more than a year so at this time next year, without this trade, we would have only had mcdonagh who may be good or he may just as well be a flop which would mean we got gomez for free.

i like the trade

how do you know he wanted out??
