xTybe_mtl
As per TSN http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283470 ---------- Former Minnesota Wild winger Marian Gaborik has agreed to a five-year contract with the New York Rangers. The Slovakian forward will earn $7.5 million per year. Gaborik played his entire seven-year career with the Wild, scoring 219 goals and 437 points in 502 games. Injuries limited Gaborik to just 13 goals and 23 points in 17 games this season. Gaborik set career highs in goals (42), assists (41) and points (83) in 77 games during the 2007-2008 campaign. The 27-year-old was Minnesota's first pick (third overall) at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

tmash
It's a lot, but fair if Gaborik could stay healthy. But I wouldn't want that contract based on his history.
leafs_rock_go_mccabe
Gaborik is worth that much money. He is an explosive talent. It's just a matter of him staying healthy and conditioning himself better. The guy could easily be a PPG player and beyond if he could avoid the groin injuries, or hip injuries, or whatever his problem is. This is a decent signing for New York given that they sent Gomez to us the other day.

On a bad year you'll get maybe 50-60 pts. On a good one, you'll get 80. With gaborik maybe you can get 80 or even 90...but on a bad year you'll get like 10. "explosive talent" for 30 games a year wont win you as much as consistent, non-flashy scoring for 80. yes, I know his money wont count towards the cap if hes on the IR, but by the time he goes down with injury there are no other good talents available - or else you have to pay thought the nose to get them. Gaborik on the first like = big problems imho. Maybe he'll prove me wrong & maybe he'll suddenly turn into a doug-jarvis type iron man, but I think its more likely he'll go the path of benoit brunet as a perrenial injury...not "if" he will get injured this year, but "when"
roy_133
Havlat for 5 mill per is much better value on a pretty fair term.
HockeyMan86
To be honest i loved how BG stayed away from gaborik and havlat two injury prone players any way you slice it they have had injury prone careers only havlat played 81 games last season. rangers over paid big time for this guy. He will be lucky enough to play 50 games for them before his groin gets hurt again. IF he can stay healthy yea he might be worth it but at 7.5m you basically signed a gomez contract..and like someone else said you know what you get from gomez and hes hardly injured. SteenIsThaFuture
Have you factored in the fact Chris Pronger just signed a 7 year extension? I'm pretty sure the Devils (Parise) Isles (Tavares) and Penguins (Crosby) are just an concerned
franck5890
Havlat for 5 mill per is much better value on a pretty fair term. Would have been nice to see him or Hossa (also around $5-mil) come our way.
roy_133
Would have been nice to see him or Hossa (also around $5-mil) come our way. Yeah, Hossa is obviously mostly concerned with having a chance to win, and with the season we're coming of off we're basically in no position to assure anything (as much as we'd like to think we are). Havlat, I would have liked but who knows if he even wanted to play under Martin again. Maybe Bob just figured Gionta was more durable and more of a sure bet? Or maybe he tried on Havlat and was told he wasn't interested in being a Hab.

Was referring to Havlat (that's who roy_133 was talking about in his post), I could care less for Gaborik also. Yeah, Hossa is obviously mostly concerned with having a chance to win, and with the season we're coming of off we're basically in no position to assure anything (as much as we'd like to think we are). But I think you could be right -- maybe Bob was going after "Martin"-type players.
tmash
What is the big deal with Havlat? The most points he ever got was 68 (granted in 68 games), His highest goal total was 31. Between Gaborik and Havlat, for the same price, I'd take Gaborik. Both have major injury issues, but I think Gaborik is a better player. But price tag included, probably Havlat (although I don't like either due to being highly injury prone).
franck5890
I dunno Graeme, I just love watching him when he's on the ice. When he's healthy, he's a top-end upper-echelon player in this league easily. I find him to be so calm and smooth with the puck, one of those players that are dangerous from anywhere. He's an absolutely fantastic shooter and has more than adequate set-up skills. It's unfortunate that he's so injury-prone, but if you can get 65-75 games out of him in a year, it's more than worth it if you ask me.

tmash
You mean other than last year? My mistake, I was originally looking for his best PPG, but then ended up presenting it as absolute. In any case, 77 points in 81 games is a good player, but I still don't think it puts him in the class with Gaborik.
