Koivu had a passion for this city, yes, and he brought a lot of heart, but we have to be realistic here, he wasn't a star player who carried the team deep into the playoffs....besides #11 is a sweet number and there will most certainly be a better #11 in the future

How could he carry the team deep into the play offs look at what sorta teams hes been given. Also i would rather see koivu retire the number 11 then see some shmuck wear it and tarnish that number.

grins...That's a very good reason to retire 11........plus, I always liked Tardiff and Walter too.....neither worthy of having his jersey retired, but somehow retiring 11 seems so fitting.....9-10-11-12

No i am not saying ignore them i am just saying koivu deserves his number retired thats all i am saying and hes this generations hero.

Maybe that is the issue

This generation hasn't had any hero's because the team has been crap for the past 16 or so years so this generation is looking to anyone to look up to

Ask a long time Canucks fan ;)

I don't know any

Well, I must say... I am happy to hear that Gomez is taking number 91 and Cammalleri is taking number 13. I was sort of worried that someone might think taking number 11 was a good idea. I'm glad to hear no one has taken it... Yet. :o

If anyone takes 11 on this team i will be on their butt their entire hockey career you can bet on that!!

He's just not god enough of a player.

I think this was a tell-tale slip :)

Meh, Muller was wildly popular wearing #11 and Koivu took it the very next year. Of course it was a different situation but players do take numbers all the time. Kovy wore was was my favorite habs' number: 27 (shayne corson) and I was fine with that. I wouldnt have liked Laracque or some 4th liner to wear it....

No matter who/when someone takes it, Im sure most of us will think of Sax when we see it.

necro-threading this.

this is going to be debated even possibly after it gets done(or not). if anything, Koivu was in his right the most controversial captain in habs history. to add to the topic i'd like to go back to an old issue of Sports Illustrated a buddy of mine showed me containing "the most influencial hockey players of each time of all time"...or something along those lines.

now this may go off topic a bit but here i go anyways, flipping through those pages you had the obvious picks but then i came up to the tampa bay lightning and SI had picked Vinny as there most influencial player for that team. suffice to say i wanted to scream bloody murder and here is where the #11 retirement of our ex-captain debate comes in: what about Dave Andreychuck?

what about the "mediocre" captain who brought a nowhere team to the stanley cup final, led them through thick and thin and got the oppertunity to lift lord stanley's cup? would he not be the most influencial player on that team? or are trophies/awards/records/production all that matters?

if you believe that Andreychuck deserves to be recognized as such over Vinny, than you should alos believe that Saku deserves to have #11 retired in his name. Suffice to say i don't believe in my heart of hearts that it will happen, but i do wish it did.

if anything, my brain tells me his number may be "honoured" a la leafs...something that disgusts me but it is better than nothing...i guess...

Now, as much of a Saku fan as I am, I'm not so sure if his jersey should be retired. At the very least, I think his # should be honored. There are just as many good (if not better) players who haven't had their numbers retired. That's the problem with a 100 year old team that's had so many greats.

If we didn't already have so many retired numbers or if it was another team, he probably would have his # retired.

Anyone who doubts Saku's place in Canadiens history, should look up TSN's all-time ultimate Habs line up.

They have Saku centering the 2nd line, pretty impressive when you think of all the players they had to chose from.

Don't you retire Hall Of Fame Players numbers? He is not a hall of famer.......tooo many numbers retired now should just do what the leafs do honour the player soon the habs will have 96.3 and 69.8 or stuff.

retired numbers and the HHoF have no link what so ever.

many numbers have been retired prior to the player making the HHoF and its happened that players who made the HHoF have not had their numbers retired.

This is just crazy...if you want to honor someone that had major points or whatever thats where you look at him from a HHOF perspective i think retiring someones number is based on WHAT THE PLAYER MEANT AND DID FOR THAT CERTAIN TEAM! who gives a damn if he didnt have the most points or whatever thats why we have the HHOF for! its crazy that the habs have to retire all the players in the 1970s theirs just way too damn many i mean sure retire the super stars of that era but cmon how many more do we have to retire from back then? i mean think about it saku koivu will probably be the LAST captain to ever captain the habs past 5 years as a captain i will bet on that for sure in this day and age no one is drafted and retires with the same team any longer koivu is the last. Why the hell not retire his number captained this team for 9 years and went through a ton of ***** that he shouldn't have gone through look at other captains you see them having to deal with the same damn question every interview about speaking french? i feel sorry for koivu i mean yea BG talked to him before letting him go but it must a been a kick in the pants to koivu.

EDIT

id also like to add look at our line up as of now we are missing a second line center that would have been PERFECT for koivu to still be a hab and still contribute to the team.

Saku Koivu is a 1 of a kind leader. He always gives his best and shrugs off his injuries. It makes me think about if I will ever be alive to witness a Canadiens Captain like Saku Koivu ever again. He is a small hockey player, but has the biggest heart in the NHL. It made me want to cry when I heard that we would be losing Saku. He made the Boring days of the Montreal Canadiens fun to watch. He has overcome Cancer, a terrible eye injury, and a broken foot, which he played through in the playoffs in hopes that he would help advance his team to the Cup. I only regret 1 thing... I had to see Saku leave Montreal without Holding the Cup above his head. Should Saku's jersey be retired? You tell me.

that is my theory on the case. I doubt you will ever see anyone given that number, well not within the next few years anyway :)

As much as I love Koivu, that TSN list is a joke in my eyes.

The people left off in sted of others? Komisarek on the FIRST defensive pair?

Not a fan of that list at all.

Is the Pope Catholic? Geesh. There is no doubt his jersey will be retired one day.

Saku only signed a one year contract. I think he wanted to play with Teemu for a seson. Next year he may come back once Bob is gone and the new GM comes in. Remember Brisebois came back. Corson came back. Richer came back.....guys come back.

I am not sure of its worth to be retired. I'm a huge Koivu fan. I believe the number should not be issued to another player and we should wait another couple of seasons to see how our team and Koivu's career play out.

I'd say Steve Shutt is probably more deserving than Koivu, he was a huge goal scorer and Cup champion and a vital cog on dominant teams. Still, wheter or not others on here want to acknowlegde it Koivu was the longest serving Captain in team history, carried himself with class and anyone else wearing number 11 would be an imposter. Even if it doesnt get retired, nobody should wear it until Koivu is retired elsewhere. Period.
