darren19
Markov Spacek Hamrlik Mara Gill Gorges O'Byrne I think the D core improved a lot in terms of skill but mostly it will surround are best asset a lot better; Price.
Ianzy
We definitely have better depth imo, getting rid of franky broth was needed. The loss of komisarek hurts, however if Hamrlik is able to play like he did 2 seasons ago, we won't feel it. We will probably also see some better first passing. Hopefully mara and gill will help out in front of the habs net, an area where we have been weak defensively at times..

CanadianMike
I don't know which one to vote for, but just the fact that we don't have that pylon also know as a traitor Komisarek I say we have improved.
Rayzor123
I like our defense core. The Mara signing adds toughness to it, and we do have some size. Gill at 6'9" and Mara is a pretty big dude at 6'4" and 219 pounds, and a fighter. I like our defense corps. I think it's improved.
Bobyk77
Not a huge step forward, but I think it's a step in the right direction. Paul Mara adds another steady blueliner to the group and I think we all believe that him and Gill more than take the place of Booey an Breezeby
ruuvimeisseli
Improved a little, atleast each line has size. Markov 6' 0--Mara 6' 4 Harmlik 6' 2--Spacek 5' 11 Gorges 6' 1--Gill 6' 7 O'bryne 6'

Manatee-X
Improved a little, atleast each line has size. Markov 6' 0--Mara 6' 4 Harmlik 6' 2--Spacek 5' 11 Gorges 6' 1--Gill 6' 7 O'bryne 6' 6 Especially taking O'Byrne into account, that's actually a pretty big group of defenders. I really don't know why everyone's so hot on Toronto's defense, to be honest. Unless Beauchemin has a really good season coming off his injury AND Komisarek can rebound in a big way from last season, they're really nothing to get TOO excited about (especially if they trade Kaberle). For all the talk they get, I think this group can match them. Markov > Schenn, and seeing Mara in there really makes the rest of the group balance out as well. ColRouleBleu
Improved a little, atleast each line has size. Markov 6' 0--Mara 6' 4 <-- better than Markov/Komisarek of 2008-2009 Harmlik 6' 2--Spacek 5' 11 <-- better than Hammer/anyone who played on his right so far Gorges 6' 1--Gill 6' 7 <-- better (as in bigger and more resilient) than Bouillon / Gorges O'bryne 6' 6 Those are the pairings I see as well. DA_Champion
It's significantly improved, I think it was the wrong decision to give a 2-year contract to Hal Gill, and in hindsight with the Mara signing we could have not given him a contract. The-Anti-Senator
Six established blue liners. Three who can move the puck, Markov, Spacik (sp) and Hamrlik. Three steady stay at home defencemen, Mara, Gill and Gorges. Good balance and some toughness on top of that. A previous poster commented on the logic of signing Gill to a two year deal. Well in two years Subban should be ready to take his place for much cheaper than Gill, which will free up cash to resign Markov who is a UFA in two seasons. Pretty sound thinking on Bob Gainey's part if you ask me. Until then you get a big body on defence who has won a Cup. Certainly he is a bit of a pylon but he is a big pylon with a large wingspan and you can never discount the intangibles of having someone with his experience on the team. habsfan512
I like it. There will also be some injuries out there and we have relief on the way in Hamilton. But I am pleased - I still do not think the changes are over there has to be some carryover from the previous year.
montreal-mo
It is great that Gainey is rebuilding the core of the Montreal Canadiens. I am very excited and I know that even the Offensive pick ups can play Defensive minded hockey, because Gomez and Gionta both played for New Jersey before the lockout, which lets face it, was the most boring defensive hockey system in the world. I am also happy because now we will not have to depend on price to do absolutely everything, Price will now have some help. I am very excited about this new system and I am looking forward to what the habs will do this upcoming season.

That's a good thing, for starters. I noticed in the last few day, that the "GAINEY MUST GO" CHANTS have simmered down some. Going into the season, with all the new acquisitions, with such a unknown, there was soooo many questions. Were not looking that bad,as some had us being. But,we still need to wait & see how this team gels together, and hoping some team chemistry with this new team all comes together. I am so looking forward the the season. GOHABS. Typical ***** from TV who i feel are told to build up the Maple Leafs because of the huge fan base. Yes it does look good on paper, and I feel they will be a very tough team to beat next season , but if they take Kaberle out of the equation , it will be a huge loss as a swift skating, puck carrying defenseman are few and far between . As far as our d goes ; much improved, one thing we are missing though is that big shot from the point , yes Markov has one , but I mean like when Souray was around , it opens up alot of options down low or near the mid wall to take that quick pass and walk it to the net. Culchie
I thought Montreal's fans were supposed to be the most hockey knowlegable fans around ?? Going by the vote, if you think we improved alot on the defensive side, you are all nuts !! That has been the weakest part of our puzzle for years. Defensive, not Offensive defensmen. For once they need to spend the bulk of the FA money on great, younger defensmen. The goalie is only as good as the defense in front of him. And the organization sucks for not re-signing Koivu !!! Well said . I think we all agree that the corps has improved from last year , it's a little better , but not great. Beauchemin would have been a good fit, Montador has that hard nose work ethic on D like Moen brings to the wing . Komisarek was left out to dry and fight all the other teams` tough guys, because there was no one else , that's where a guy like an Exelby, Jackman, or Witt would have played a huge part for us to clear the front of the net and take out anyone trying to take liberties out on our goaltenders . Hopefully someone will teach O'Byrne how to skate, because he's a terrible skater ; Fischer, Weber and Subban will be just fine with some patience and playing experience . habs-transaction-genius
i think it is much better than last year, first of all the players are much bigger and secondly, we don't only have 5 d-men like last year and now we can bench o'byrne plus, they can all log atleast 19 minutes each game and we have markov and spacek for the PP and gill and mara for the PK. markov-spacek hamerlik-gorges gill-mara o'byrne
losthab
i really like the signings, we have gotten bigger, more experienced and i think a little more serious with the grizzled vets who can help ob and weber. i dont know how anyone can think, dandy, bouillion, schneider, gorges, hamrlik, weber was better than, markov, mara, spacek, hamrlik, gill, weber, gorges. i also might add, i really hope weber is the 6th d this year, i think this kid willbe better than schneider was in his prime

roy_133
Our D last year was pretty horrendous as it turned out so it's not terribly hard to be better but I actually do like our depth. We have 6 guy's who can all fill a role, some good size, good PKers, some PP guy's, guy's who can move the puck. It's not the defense Anaheim used to win a cup, but it's the best defense we've had around here for a while IMO.
