mdines
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=285258 Looks like we have our #2 centre! Personally I think it's a great deal considering what happened in 07-08 compared to last year. If he puts up the points, he gets a better contract; if he doesn't we can deal him on the deadline for picks/prospects.

SpecialboyMikey
Im on the Fence with this trade, but i think signing him means maybe hes on his way out with halak? as maybe thats why we got the contract of sanford now? Chris
billy-piton
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=285258 only 1 year eh i don't like the deal. if you belive in a player give him at least three years deal. if you don't, trade him right away. this is a lose-lose option. if plekenec would play this season like he did in 2007./2008. he will ask for 4-5m next season and we are gonna lose him for nothing, if his numbers drop, we won't get even close what we could get now. FirstStar
Just read it on TSN. So, he had a bad 08-09 season, Ryder had one bad season with us then took off in Boston. I'm giving Plecks the benefit of the doubt, there was a lot going on last year. Most of our team was under performing last season, can't just single out a few players. Here's to new faces and a new beginning for our returning players. With the centennial season a thing of the past (and the hockey world just waiting for us to fail), the boy's have a chance to start over and get back to playing hockey. Not happy with some of the contracts, but all in all, we have a better team than last year. I don't expect us to finish 1st in the east, but I doubt we'll limp into the playoffs come April '10 like we did in '09. Can't accuse Pleks of not working hard, the bounces didn't go his way, it was a season filled with bad bounces and bad luck. With a new team and (possibility) of new line mates, I feel Pleks will have a much better season. Let's call last season a learning experience and move on to the upcoming season. habs-transaction-genius
unbelievable, he is getting more cash thaneric cole and around the same as knuble who had 27 goals and 20 assists, and worst of all, it is only a 1 year deal so nobody will want him in a trade and next year we will lose him. in arbitration, he would have received probably 2 million

A-K-46
look at what eklund had to say "Plekanec. I am a big fan. rumors have persisted however that his signing could be a sign and trade with San Jose. making calls.." this guy cracks me up

And don't forget that we now have a true #1 centre, meaning less pressure on Plek and he won't be facing the opposing team's top D pairing and best checking line Also, he's scored 20+ goals for the last 3 years. I'm pretty sure we'll see him score 20-25 goals to go with 30-40 assists (especially if he plays with Cammy!).

sebchenier
Eklund is a fraud. He lives in a little Eklund fantasy land conjuring up possible trades or what he would consider to be "logical trades" and attaches attributes such as e2 or e3 to them just to make it sound credible. catt-_mtlc
Will this make him a UFA next year? I'm curious to know this also and how much cap room do we have left? I think this might be a sign that Bob won't be trading Plecs after all.
sebchenier
I'm actually glad to have pleks back. He's a very smart hockey player who should fit in Jacques Martin's system very well.

Koolor
I like Plekanec, yes he had an awful season but so did the rest of the team minus Lapierre. This is what I think is happening, next year we have a ton of cap space coming + if we get rid of Hamrlik (hope we do) more cap space. I think BG is going to give all these players who signed 1 year deals raises (Latendresse, Plekanec ect) next year
roy_133
So he's pretty much gone after this season I guess. It's possible, but there's no way Pleks and his agent ask for anything more than 1 year after the season he had, great chance for him to have a big year and increase his payday as a potential UFA, whether here or elsewhere. I doubt we'll have enough cap room to sign him long term next year. This is basically a tryout year if he flourishes someone will overpay for him if not we sign him next year cheap. Although I admit we will probably end up with some cap issues in the future, one of the upsides to signing all of these five year deals is that it brings some consistancy to the forward ranks. Pleky's linemates this year will likely be very similar to what they'd be on this team for quite some time. If you're going to give a player a tryout year, I'd say this is a pretty ideal time to do it. Maybe, assuming he has a good year, he'd be willing to take a bit of a hometown discount secure in the knowledge that he should be able to play with the same folks that helped with that good year in future seasons?
