looks as though Montreal GM Bob Gainey has reportedly had trade discussions with Dallas, Edmonton and San Jose in recent weeks, although nothing is imminent as of yet, it looks as though Montreal is trying to pick up another top 6 forward and with Montreal being very close to the cap it looks as though they'd have to trade a big salary the other way, quite possibly Roman Hamrlik

the problem is that Roman Hamrlik is grossly overpaid, and GMs around the league know that, can anybody honestly say that Hamrlik is worth 5.5 Millions per year ?

I cant see Horcoff coming this but what about fernando pisani? maybe Dustin Penner? We are saving some Money by getting penners contract. Plus he does have some stuff to prove to some critics! or even ales kotalik or patrick o sullivan? any one of the players mentioned in my post is good

Kotalik is a rangers

I see Dallas as the most likely fit. They have alot of cap space and are in real need for a solid defenceman who can help "tutor" their young guys like Grossman, Dalley et al. Most of all he is a stabalizing force on the blueline that could help Turco look a little better and add that veteran presence with Playoff experience to give them that little extra push for a playoff spot.

IF BG wants a top 6 fwd, he could ask for Richards, but with his NTC and MAJOR contract, I doubt he would.

He could ask for Neal, a big LW with a ton of upside.

Likely he'd be looking for a prospect and pick out of this one a a solid salary dump. I would look for Grossman in return but not likely to happen (if he deals with Dallas)

to Dallas

Hamerlik

To Mtl

2nd rd pick 2010

3rd rd pick 2011

This opens up 5.5M under the cap for BG to make a deal for a big centreman

Wouldn't being ironic if Ribiero was in the mix?

I would like a deal with Edmonton for Dustin Penner......He would fit nicely on the first or second line...

A line of Penner, Gomez and Gionta

Another Line of Cammerelli, Pleks and AK

Or Cammerelli, Gomez and AK

and Penner Pleks and Gionta....

We get size a 20 to 30 goal scorer and a contract that is 1.25 million less...that is is they would take Hammer for 2 years......you may have to throw in a player like dags also to sweeten teh pot , but if you have penner coming this way you would not need Dags...

Then you would have a nice thrid line of LAps, LAts and SK

Hamrlik would be the 5th defenseman in Edmonton, I don't think Edmonton plans on paying a 5th defenseman 5.5 Millions per year.

You guys need to understand that Hamrlik has no value.

Canadiens weighing trade options, eh? Discussions with Dallas, Edmonton, and San Jose, eh? I don't really see a top-6 forward in Dallas that we would even have a chance at obtaining. Ribiero? No. Morrow? Definitely no. Richards? PLEASE no. Edmonton and San Jose might be more realisitc trade partners, but I don't really see them needing any more highly paid d-men. Edmonton already has Visnovsky, Souray, and Gilbert locked up. San Jose already has Boyle, Blake, Erhhoff, and Vlasic signed. Unless someone is trading us a d-man back in any potential deal. Dallas might be looking for a d-man given that their highest paid d-man is Trevor Dailey at $2.3 million. But jeez, who on Dallas would we want? I can't even think of a prospect in their system that's meant to be great.

If we take a look at the three teams noted I think that San Jose has the possibilities of Clowe, Cheechoo and Pavelski. I could see a deal like this if it were San Jose:

To MTL: Clowe, 7th Rounder

To SJS: 2nd Rounder, Hamrlik

For Edmonton, the only realistic possibilities are Penner and Pisani and because of Penner's contract it could be straight up.

For Dallas, getting a top siz forward is almost impossible because they don't really have any apart from RIbero and Morrow.

I think Clowe and Penner are the targets to add size up top.

Clowe - Gomez - Gionta or Penner - Plekanec - Cammalleri are the best fits.

Reading the article in it's entirety to me gives a little bit different perspective than just what is posted here. Too many "looks as though" and "quite possiblys" for me. But it is fun to speculate I guess. LOL

i imagine gainey's always looking to improve the team but i'll believe a trade is imminent when it's done.

hammer is the new higgins which, i imagine, means he won't move before next summer, if at all, despite that his name will surface in every conceivable rumour for the next year.

Package up Hamerlik, Halak, a mid-level prospect (like a Trotter as an example) and a pick to Dalas for Neal. He's a natural centre, top 6 fwd who has already proven himself and has a ton of upside and could solve our big centreman problem giving us alot of cap room.

If he's the new Higgins, he then will be traded to the New York Rangers and the Canadiens will acquire a new overpaid player. This cycle will continue forever and the Rangers will end up with a roster of 100 and the Habs will have a 3 player roster.

Dallas actually has Jamie Benn. Did great in the WJC. He played in the WHL this year for the kelowna rockets along with my buddy kyle st. denis. But if we were to make a trade to Dallas im sure Bob would love to get his hands on Benn. Pure goal scorer.

That actually sounds pretty reasonable. I assume we would have to take some additional salary back our way, but that seems like a very reasonable trade proposal. Halak gives them a potential number 1 if Turco leaves next summer, Hamrlik provides some defensive stability, and a throw in like Trotter would just be sweetener. I'm not sure how well Dallas thinks of James Neal, but he was a 2nd round draft choice so he shouldn't be too heavilty prized, should he?
