honorable mention to gorges for a great game played in pre-season. was really the saving grace and should have gotten a star- maybe even two.

He should have gotten 2 stars lol?

Anyway, I like Josh a lot but he did start to wear down a bit down the stretch last year so I think watching his minutes earlier in the season is the best way to go. He kind of got thrown in to a bigger role last season because he was one of the only guy's playing competently post all star game.

He's a good kid though, I love the idea of him and Gill as a 3rd pairing, solid, smart and between them they're pretty good at everything.

It's incredibly helpful that we are able to feel good about having our third defensive pairing on the ice at just about any point in a game. This should help to keep Markov's minutes down, leaving him fresher for times when we really need offense (e.g. the PP) and for later in the season/playoffs.

Can anyone who watched the game tell me how Gorges played? He finished at -2 on the stat sheet, but I hate using plus-minus as a gauge of player performance on a given night because it tells you nothing about the circumstances which led to the goals against. Also, when you're facing Crosby & Malkin, you are going to get scored on. ;)

i was at the game and as i said above i thought he played a much tighter game than against the bruins. i thought he handled the puck and the corners well enough in our zone. his positioning was better and he covered his man decently. no break out passes yet and not a great performance but overall an improvement over sunday especially considering he was on our second pairing and, as you noted, covered malkin or crosby all night.

Thanks, bigs. That sounds like an informed assessment.

Says you!

Josh had a solid start to the year last year, but like someone said up there, he kind of got worn out for getting so much ice time and so many responsibilities...but this year he should be prepared, and he should have a lot more help back there too.

It sucks that I can't find and watch our preseason games anywhere, so I really don't know how anyone is playing... but I am a firm believe that Gorges has been playing very well, haha.

Nice too see some good reports by people anyways. :)

And I am excited for October 1st when I'll be able to watch games again and watch the Habs get their first two points and beat the Leafs!!! Who knows what to expect in that game because just like us, they have quite the new team too...

Go Habs Go!

hes been slow and sluggish all pre season just playing a sloppy game, not what he is capable of but still 8 days for him to get it in gear

I was stuck just listening to the game last night, but just the amount of times I heard things like "and Gorges pinching in... OH! Great scoring chance!" makes me think he must have had a pretty good game. I wonder, with Martin's emphasis on the D joining the rush, if Josh will put up some decent offensive numbers this year?

They're probably learning a new "System" where you cover for the point man when a D pinches in. Something Carbonneau never taught them, I guess. Last year all I can remember was, "D pinches in... Odd man rush against Montreal."

The TSN guys were thinking Josh is a legitimate candidate for captaincy.

After thinking about that, I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Oi. Really? The guy had a mediocre camp and it's not even clear that he deserves to be in the lineup over O'Byrne, but we want to make him captain?

I like Josh, but he's a 5th d-man at best and he might not even be around after the end of next season when he goes UFA. And I don't want to overpay to keep him in Montreal because he's our captain and we feel obliged to spend cap space on heart, soul, and other cliché.

I never thought about the second point you make, but my opinion was based mostly on his personality. I thought he played pretty good last year (I caught one game of pre-season and most of that I spent wowing at how great the midgets were doing against Pittsburgh's B-team).

I think he's got the personality of a leader, but you do make a good point.

jlglib had a good point in the O'Byrne thread - Josh does wear out a little bit towards the end of the season.
