I was listening to the interview today with Markov and you can just sense listening to him fight with the English language to either understand or reply to that giving him the "C" would only hurt his game in the long run and without proper understanding of the questions how can he properly give a good answer.

I was listening to some comments on the TSN site, and it makes me laugh just to read the ignorance of some of the comments as to why Markov turned it down.

Here are some:

WOW! Who does that? That sure shows his commitment to the team.. I doubt he'll resign after his contract is up.. Say goodbye to another star Montreal in 2011... He's the only one worthy of a C.. Check that roster out I don't see a single player worthy.. Thats not a good sign Gainey

Can't say I blame you Andrei. You'd only be thrown to the wolves every time the team loses - which will be often this season. report this comment

Im a HABS fan and have been since CONCEPTION. With that said, Im also a REALIST. Would you accept a position to captain the TITANIC when you already know what the outcome is going to be? report this comment

smart move by markov ... who'd want to be responsible for leading the habs this year?! it'll be like protecting the little kids at the playground during recess ... report this comment

Habs will be captainless like the Leafs now

who wants to be caption on a sinking ship.

Declined??? Good team spirit to start the season. Should get rid of him too. report this comment

I wouldnt want to captain a team who's fate rests on carey price's shoulders either

Being Captain of the Habs is NOT what it used to be, there used to be an almost godlike manner to the position but lately it isnt there so much.Markov just wants to play and let him as it is probably his last year anyway. The Habs are just an ordinarry team with nothing much going for them eventho they are my team and have been for over 60 years but they are so watered down they are pretty much a have been franchise report this comment

Martin has said that Bob Gainey and himself will pick the Captain after the exhibition. They will see who got the moxy for the Captain. I think it will be Gomez for 2 reasons;

reason one, he has the experience, has a Stanley Cup to his resume and looks to be a vocal guy who doesn't mind dealing with the media.

reason two, he has already begun to take french lessons and so by early in the season he should be able to answer a few questions in french.

I'm happy to see the media is already supposedly fabricating stories about Markov and the captaincy. So, according to Martin, he hasn't been approached about the captaincy and Martin will decide, along with Gainey, at the end of training camp. That's quite the departure from early reports saying, "Markov had turned down the 'C'." Which, knowing Montreal media, would have been thrown in his face if he underperforms at any point this season. Even if Montreal had offered him the 'C' and he DID turn it down, they shouldn't be releasing that nonsense to the public. It can only possibly be used against him from a character standpoint. I can see the headline now... "Markov turns down 'C'. Must not be committed to Canadiens!"<_<

agreed. if you dare, check out the rumour thread about it. someone posted tsn.ca reader responses. not positive, to say the least - of course the headline, "markov rebuffs captaincy" didn't help.

At least this season it seems we will have a coach that will stand up for our players. Martin has already taken it upon himself to say HE will decide the captaincy and that it unequivocally was not offered to Markov. Last year Carbonneau would have said something stupid like, "Oh, I guess Markov just isn't that kind of guy. I guess he just wants to do his thing and not be bothered by YOU guys!"

you can't force someone to become captain who doesn't want to share those duties.

Becoming a captain is like being promoted only with no direct salary increase but you take on more responsibilities. I can see why most players would want the position but I can also see why not.

If we can get the most out of Markov as long as he doesn't become captain then he should not be made captain. He likes to fly under the radar, can't blame him.

'c' no evil for blue-liner markov

Andrei Markov is looming over Montreal's hockey landscape, most obviously these days at the southeast corner of the Bell Centre.

The all-star defenceman's towering likeness stares down off the arena over St. Antoine St., very many times larger than life. Spread over 34 panels, Markov is so tall on the building that he could probably see clear to Brossard, where he'd have viewed himself yesterday as the centre of crazed attention.

Markov denied he's been approached by the Canadiens to serve as the club's 28th captain and sew the "C" on his sweater to replace free-agent Saku Koivu, who departed this summer.

Head coach Jacques Martin said the same thing yesterday, but put more meat on the bones of speculation by pointing out that the organization - that is, himself - will name the captain at the end of this month's training camp.

"It's not my decision. It's the coach's decision," Markov said yesterday after practice. "We'll see what happens. ...

I don't know the (selection) rules. We still have (nearly) three weeks of training camp and enough guys to (provide) leadership on the team, on and off the ice.

"I just know it's a big responsibility and I think it's not easy to be captain in front of you guys," he said to the media scrum. "It's something special to be captain in Montreal. It's too early to talk about that.

"Everybody knows we have big changes this year, a lot of new faces on our team. There's going to be a new system and we have to find our team game. I enjoy playing and trying to help our team to be better. I just do my job."

The vacant captaincy of the Canadiens has been a topic of conversation since Koivu's decade-long reign ended in July. Markov's name has been on many lips; so have those of newcomers Scott Gomez and Mike Cammalleri, and even that of sparkplug Maxim Lapierre, a popular long shot at best.

Some believe it wouldn't be a bad thing to start the season without a captain, or to rotate the "C" until the permanent role ultimately settles on the right player for the right reasons.

"We have enough voices and enough leaders in this room to step up and say the things that need to be said," Cammalleri said as the Markov madness unfolded across the dressing room from him.

"There are a lot of leadership roles that people assume on a team. Whether it's a guy like (defenceman) Hal Gill, who will be up talking, getting the guys riled up. Or a guy like Markov, who will lead by example, make great plays and win battles on the ice. Teams have captains for different reasons. It's just what fits in your group.

"I look around this room, at the names and faces and read the mantra - it's the Montreal Canadiens. There's something a little more exclusive about this club than others, and maybe a different level of responsibility that comes with being captain."

Martin said he's using training camp to evaluate every player in uniform. It's not an audition for the captaincy, which he'll decide upon in a few weeks without a vote of his players.

"I've always believed I'm looking for certain things in a captain," Martin said. "I feel it's important we have an individual that's on board, that shares the same values, views, concerns and principles as the organization. That's why I'd select the individual vs. having him voted by his teammates.

"We value (Markov's) value to the organization, his skill set. He's one of our better players," he added in colossal understatement, "and we want him to be one of our leaders on the ice."

So the wisest thing Martin can do is not stitch the "C" on jersey No. 79.

Markov signed a four-year, $23-million (U.S.) Canadiens contract in May 2007, considerably less than the impending unrestricted free agent would have fetched on the market.

Then a six-year Canadien, he chose to stay because he loves the city and doesn't mind flying a little under the PR radar, a shy man left to do his superb work in relative peace.

That would change completely if he were captain. Still sometimes hesitant in English and without any French, Markov would have to assume myriad new duties, from being the Canadiens' public face to its lightning rod, dealing almost daily with the media to analyze the minutae of a team that is not resistant to a scandal, real or imagined.

Expose him to two years of having an accidentally fractured phrase twisted any which way and come contract time, expect to hear him become trilingual: Dasvidania, goodbye, salut.

Markov should be left to do his work as the cornerstone of the defence. Leave him with the "A". He's a tremendous leader without the third letter of the alphabet to remind anyone.

The 30-year-old spent much of the summer in Russia, vacationed a little and escaped hockey until he skated a little with the Moscow Dynamo before returning to Montreal.

"Not too many things will be like last year," Markov said away from yesterday's scrum. "Right now, the (captaincy) is a question for everybody."

His grin spread as he considered the fuss: "This is Montreal, you know? It's always the same. But it's nice to be here."

Yesterday, Markov had bigger concerns than the adornment of his sweater. His former road-trip roomie, Mike Komisarek, has gone to Toronto. That means someone new this season.

Or, as he joked, maybe his 612-game NHL tenure has qualified him for a single room.

Markov hadn't yet seen his gigantic likeness on the Bell Centre. He will tomorrow, when he drives into the arena for the Canadiens' exhibition-schedule opener against the Florida Panthers.

Watch for him to be wearing the "C" on his jersey when he skates into view, and in every game this season.

And look for the "H" in the middle of it.

hey!!! that's cool! journalists are coming on this board, last time it was weepingminotaur in hockey news, now you on the gazette... Pretty cool :P

Great article..thanks for posting.

"C" or no "C" on his jersey, Markov is (still) the biggest piece of the team's puzzle.

So true. He is, with or without the C, the leader of this team.
