leafs_rock_go_mccabe
We do have some assets, that have a potential of keeping us afloat before Markov returns - Price, coaching, offense - in that order IMO. We have no one who can replace Markov. Yes, we have hope (unlike last season), but this could turn out to be a disaster. If he is out 2 - 3 months, like Sportsnet is reporting, we could very well miss the post-season because of this. No one. I repeat, NO ONE can play defence the way Markov does for us. MLSE_Mgmt_A_Disgrace
Apparently, according to Eric Engels, Tony Marinaro of Team 990 mentioned it this morning too/earlier today. Last I heard, from TSN was that Gainey said he was being reevaluated today, which kind of makes me think that he didn't get surgery last night. But I guess we'll find out with time. ColRouleBleu
They are the only site that says ANYTHING to that effect. I'm hanging my hopes on that. All other reports are starting with something like 'According to sportsnet...' so we'll see I guess. The ONLY positive I can find in all this (and it's stretching my positive nature VERY thin) is telling myself that the Pens missed Gonchar for half the season last year and ended up winning the cup. Now dont tell me that the 2 situations cant be compared, I dont care if they can be or not, I just want to hang on to something **hides in a corner and cries in frustration** &%(?$(&$ !!! jst-onge
Everyone is right we can't replace Markov! We don't have to, sevre injury he is gone until March back in game shape by the playoffs. Hamirlik needs to get over his virious so he can get playing, O'Byrne was our best d'man last night against TO and I can see him geting better, Josh keeps stepping up at key moments, I think he should be the next captain, not flash and dance but when it counts he always seems to step up. Everyone else has to pick up the slack if Markov is out after all theyare a team not individuals.
gracie12
Unfortunately, RDS is now reporting it - saying "three to four months" is how long he could be out. http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/283502.html Again, RDS has been known to jump the gun on issues, but its not looking good. I think Markov is a lot better than Gonchar, he's the one that makes the nice passes and runs the powerplay, I'm not sure Gonchar is quite the same player he seems to be more the guy with the big shot. If he really is out 3-4 months Gainey absolutely needs to make a trade because we don't have anyone else of his style let alone his talent. Guest
Its going to be a painfull stretch without Markov in the lineup. I guess were going to see real early just how much character this team has. I look for Weber to now get a call up to help out on the PP.

This is why I did not include defense in my list of assets. What I meant, that while you cannot replace Markov, we have a potential of some one stepping up indirectly, i.e. not actually replacing him in what he can do. The prime candidate for that could exceptional play by Price, which he is capable of IMHO - but that is nothing more than a chance. Second good coaching can also adjust to the absence of your star player and keep the in a position to be able to salvage the season when your star player returns. If he was out for the entire season yes, but not for 3-4 months. Weber and O'Byrne will see alot of ice time. So much for seeing Spacek and Markov on the pp together. Manatee-X
If you asked any Habs fan yesterday what the worst possible way to start the season would be, I think this is what they'd have said . And again, like Lang, such a dumb freak accident.

Gainey can't make a trade when Markov is back and it will be before the end of the season they will be over the cap and they will have to place any new aqisition on waivers and they will loss the new player and whatever they trades to get him. Gainey is not going to panick. The onlt good news is there is 81 games left in the season. TIME is on our side. Plus ask the guys they did not play their best last night we will get better. gracie12
Look on the bright side: IF we can remain competitive & find a way to win without markov in the lineup, this team will be in fine playoff form once he returns. Of course its a HUGE if.

Of course its a HUGE if. true that but there's the 81 games to watch before any playoff entertainment can be enjoyed ... wins are what matters most each game but markov not being part of the cast somewhat tarnishes the movie for me
