As hard of a pill as this is to swallow I think we all forgot that we were down 3-2 when Marky went down. We tied it up without him and we won without him. Yes, it's going to be difficult but at the same time I think the troops will try their darnest to rally around the fact that Marky is not going to be there anytime soon. Crosby went down for 29 games two years ago and the Pens went all the way to the finals that year. Let's try to find some positives here people.

There's the spirit!!! Absolutely, hockey is all about challenges, and this is just one of them.

i like your post but we don't have a malkin...

i'm not writing off the season. no need to panic until we see what happens on the ice.

Markov's injury = terrible beyond words can express. I don't think it means no play-offs for Habs, but rest of the D will have to step it up big time. Oh my, it really was dearly paid victory yesterday.

I dont think it means we wont be in the play offs, however I think Price as well as the rest of the team will have to play 110%, also I will not be surprised to see a trade

its a big loss but certainly not the end of the world....

we added 3 nhl defenceman in the off season...Obryne appears to be coming along really nicely and we already have Hammer and Georges...

Last year we had a batterd Komo and Hammer and Georges --- Obryne was dreadful and Yannik Weber...well was a kid..

We still have a pretty good group....

Georges and Spacek

Hammer and Obryne

Gill and mara...

This actually good be a little blessing for Obrynes Carreer...Becuase there is no doubt the return of Hammer Obryne would be seeing the pressbox more than most...he now gets a chance to develop his game with some pretty good veteran players...

If he continues to develop and play like he did last night .... it all may well work out in the end...

That was the old "us". Consider that this is a different team, with many different players, and I think a much better collective attitude. I refuse to be the typical Habs fan and cry "the sky is falling". Markov is a great player, but he's just one player. If this team has as much character as I hope they do, someone or many someones will step up in his absence. To read on here that "we're screwed" makes me shake my head at Habs fans. IT'S GAME ONE!!! SETTLE DOWN...HAVE A LITTLE FAITH!!!

Exactly, this isn't the same team that fell apart last season when Markov went down before the playoffs. It has alot more character and grit and doesn't revolve a heavily rely on 1 player anymore.

With markov out we will not make the playoffs, unless someone can fill in his shoes. We just lost the biggest part of the team, but when one door closes another opens and it could be the perfect time for webber or subban to step in and help us out. I really like webber and think that he is the best option for us right now. To comment on the game last night, Mara and Gill better step up to the plate cause they played like garbage last night. This better not be the type of play that we see from these guys Gainey, if so we are in a world of hurt.

What disgusts me the most is that we lose yet another player to a silly freak injury for crying out loud, which is extremely likely to have a serious impact on how the season goes for this team. Last year, we entered the playoffs with an AHL-calibre defense at best after having lost Tanguay, Higgins, Lang, Markov, Kostitsyn, Dandenault, Price, Komisarek and Latendresse during the regular season already. I really hoped for a normal season this year in terms of injuries and how does it start? Your one and only No.1 Dman is out for 4 months. Great, just great.

If last year is any indication then we're seriously screwed. When Markie went down we weren't able to win. New year however and different players but this really hurts on all levels.

We have (on paper) a much more well-rounded defense this year though. The question is going to be whether we can translate into wins.

In my best Gerard Butler Impression:

I remember in 2001-02 when everyone said "you wont make the playoffs- your best player (Koivu) is out for the season, maybe for ever (cancer)." Well, he came back for the final 3 games to find a team that managed to just squeak into the playoffs & then upset Boston in the first round.

How did we do it that year? Well a fellow by the name of Jose won the Hart & Vezina.

If we want to win this year, we're going to need other players to step up.

Im not trying to put pressure on anyone, but maybe this is Carey's year to show he truly is a thoroughbred as Gainey called him. Perhaps guys like Gomez will break 90 points & live up to his contract - or Gionta will show 48 goals wasn't an aberration & that he is worth every penny we signed him for. Maybe Obyrne & Gorges will show they are much more than 3rd pairing dmen, maybe AK and Pleks will have their 'breakout seasons." Maybe a young dman like Subban or Weber will come up & take the league by storm.

As terrible as this (losing Markov) is, sometimes its these 'catastrophes' that push a team to do better. Lets hope the team comes together & makes it so.

We are HABS!

Thankfully, we have a great coach who will do everything he can to pick up the pieces & make this team work within a system. How refreshing it was last night to see our coach say "Well, we have things we have to work on and do better" after a WIN. Something we havent seen for a loooooooong time.

I think we all have to agree that replacing Markov would be next to impossible. I for one cant think of a single available player this early in the season who could do his job. With that being said,,,,the only other option is that everybody else picks up the slack. Its a lot of slack to pick up but i'm not ( as a fan) ready to declare the season down the drain,,,, and i strongly suspect the team wont roll over without a fight. I'm going to try and remain optomistic for the time being.

No way am I giving up on the season. As good as Markov is,he's not as great as people make him out to be.If one player's injury is going to cost us the season, then we weren't much of a team to begin with

Sorry but a D-man that can get around 70 points a season while being out-standing on both side of the ice is as good as it could possibly get. Markov has more value than any of our fowards. The run for the playoff is always tight for many teams, and yes the lost of Markov for half the season can cost our entry to the play-off, easily. We may make it into the playoff, but then again, we may not.

this post is to make me feel better

we will be alright...technically markov isnt that great. he is just sound....but he did make mistakes, he doesnt have the greatest shot and sometimes when he pinches in for offence he leaves a big gap in the D........im sure one of our other dman can hold the puck at the line and deliver a descent backbone to the powerplay....for real!

Yeah, we're not going to replace Markov. We'll need more then 1 guy to take over his responsibilities, someone will have to step up on the PP (Specek, Weber, Hamrlik) someone will have to step up on the PK (OB, Mara, Gill) and we'll need everyone to step up and take on more of a role 5 on 5.

With that being said, IF (big if) we can keep our heads above water and hopefully Markov is back a little sooner then expected we could be in a very good position to strike. This will clear up some cap room so maybe if we're in 8th-10th later in the year we could add a very good rental type player and add Markov back into the lineup at once and make a huge push because the difference between 10th and 5th won't be that large. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's something.
