gracie12
The thing is I actually thought 91 looked good on Gomez. I remember reading, when PG took over, that one of his "pet peeves" was high numbers. He felt that anyone wearing a high number was putting himself above the team. In both anaheim and ottawa I do believe he made this point very clear to his players. Will be interesting to see if others follow suit. It would make sense that Gomez, being looked at as one of the leaders on the team, would be the first to do this. Kostitsyn is gone, Markov is pretty established with his number...will be interesting to see if PK starts the year with a new number, for example. Larry-Launstein-Jr
What I think would be so classy, and it could happen, is that once Koivu retires, that they have a special ceremony and Gomez gives up his number (the same as Koivu) so the number can be retired. There is precedent for this, when Ray Borque unveiled his number 77 sweater (he gave up the number 7) so Phil Esposito could get his number retired. This was so classy on Borque's part, and I think Gomez has it in him to do the same thing. That would be such a fitting tribute for both men. Sure, Gomez did a lot of his work before even becoming a Hab, and we can talk for the rest of his career about his contract, but he still has been a good addition to Montreal. He and Gionta have helped bring some spirit and a winning attitude to the Habs.
Bean-Counting-Hab
I really miss Saku, but one year is enough for a number IMO. Some people wait less time before re-marrying.
roy_133
For those who didn't read the article, Gomez seems genuinely thrilled to get the number (his boyhood number), http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Cana...4990/story.html
billy-piton
I think Gomez' number should be in the mid 70's 73?

He may deserve some recognition when he retires but retiring #11 shouldn't be included.

roy_133
The thing I do dislike is the fans who pay 300$ for their jerseys kind of get screwed when this happens. I have a buddy with a Plekanec 35 buried in his closet, lol.
