Rumor: M. Fernandez Offered Two-way Deal?

Very interesting, I'd hate to lose Halak cause I beleive he has a huge upside but, It would be good for Halak to get a real chance elsewhere. For Fernandez he would be a great and I mean great mentor for Price and since we're betting the boat on Price then I say this would be a really solid move by BG. New defense core, new goaltending coach and what could possibly be a new backup with a ton of experience, I'd say BG is setting up Price for one hell of a good season. :D

Um... Didn't Bob already sign us another backup goaltender? Why would we need another one?

Yup

Curtis sanford.

I think the speculation is that he would replace Denis, being the starter in Hamilton, but he's had decent numbers in the NHL - a career .901sav & 2.76gaa in 108 NHL games. He's 37/37 and 11. He's 29 and last year he had a solid .906sav and 2.59 gaa - certainly not horrible numbers for an NHL backup.

Fernandez...I wouldnt be devastated, but I would definitely expect a few more deals to follow suit if this rumor is true.

we should certainly move Halak, given his age and the lack of opportunity he will have, oh and given the fact he will be an UFA next season. Fernandez would be a terrific pick-up but could we get him for a price equal or cheaper than what we have Halak signed for?

Halak is a RFA not an UFA. We probably couldn't sign him 750K like Halak.

I dont understand how Gainey can sign Fernandez at about 4 million unless he wants a little less than that

if it happens fernandez would be a great mentor for carey in the up-coming season. sanford would go to the bulldogs and replace injured goalies in the habs and halak can go off to LA with hammer for frolov and a few picks! :D

He won't have any excuses for a bad season then. I still think that he not only needs a veteran backup but a chaperon so that he doesn't get tempted to hit the bars during the season. Just look at Crosby, he has Mario babysitting him and I doubt the Pittsburgh nightlife is as exciting as Montreal's

I'm not sure about Fernandez though, Halak deserves better play time than what he's getting here so this will probably the best option for him. They should have platooned Price and Halak more last season because and I feel the #1 spot shouldn't automatically go to Price. This possible move is really putting all the eggs in the collective Price basket I just hope Gainey won't have egg all over his face come December.

I'd love to see Halak getting moved before the season starts so he doesnt have to sit on the bench watching this circus that is called the Montreal Canadiends goaltending situation. If he moves to a club like LA or Atlanta that will give him a fair opportunity to grab the #1 job, he will have it secured by the allstar break.

Stats comparable to Halak's=stats comparable to Price's ;)

Potential is a different story... Every one has made it clear that they feel Halak is keeping up with Price... Personally even if they are playing about the same skill level the last two years (which i think is a stretch) Price still has far and away more potential... do you want a goalie that is playing 50/100 or a player that is playing 50/150? (skill/potential... scale obviously made up, but potential is not)... Say what you will about their skill now (still feel Price is far better than Halak), what Gainey is holding onto is the potential to have a goalie that can steal games on a regular basis...

This is just my opinion again, but I haven't seen a single game where Halak stands a chance against Price when Price is on his game... Price just needs to find consistency and then we're set... Halak is gonna be a good NHL starter, just not in Montreal

Potential is only equal to what one wants to see in one another.

I'm not high on that potential thing always backing of players who have rough patches.

But then again, I am no casino player.

I'd say that in the end, the better one might not be the one with the biggest potential.

Anyways, this season can't come quickly enough !

Ah potential! funny word!

let me get this straight, Price is "far better" than Halak when he's on his game? do me a favour? send me a pm next time he's on his game. I don't wanna miss this rare occurreance. and Gainey should probably also have held onto high potential/skill players like Garabvoski, Perezhogin, Ribeiro and let go of hard workers like Lapierre, Jorges. But wait he's not holding onto potential or skill of Price, all he's holding onto is his own ego and stubbornness.

I even doubt he would, with Quick, Bernier and Ersberg in Los Angeles & Lehtonen and Pavelec in Atlanta.

Price played great his rookie season, and then again this season leading up to the all-star break... Funny how some fans seem to forget this because of the brutal second half of the season

I'd say that in the end, the better one might not be the one with the biggest potential.

Agreed, I feel Price has been better than Halak anyway... So in my mind his skill and potential are higher and thats why we would keep him over Halak... I don't let a few months of poor play in his second season cloud my memory of what this guy can do and has done...
