SpecialboyMikey
why did gainey only sign stewart to the 1 year contract? why not a 2-3 year?
kfourni
Well it looks like one of the remaing RFA's has been signed, only Dag's to go
Telly_39_s_1
This team definately won't be easy to push around this year, especially with that tiny wrecking ball Brian Gionta up front. It's too early to call him "Pocket Rocket 2", but hey, you never know.
bikerbob7501
I really wonder why him and not D'agostini. We would get more goals out of him for sure, and there seems to be a lot of size already.

kfourni
I wonder why BG only signed him to a 1 year deal....maybe he's going to be used as trade bait or maybe BG is feeling uncertain and is giving him a trial period.
bikerbob7501
A couple guys, like Plekanec are being signed to one year deals because they have to prove themselves after lack lustre seasons.

Ya I guess, but It's hard to judge if Stewart had a lack lustre season after only playing 16 games ( near the end of the season too)...In fact I think he did quite well in the NHL I think it's because we can't really afford to sign him any longer. I find it hard to believe that money is the issue....what's his cap hit like 500-600K?

DA_Champion
He's signed to a 1-year deal because he'll be a spare 4th line player. I think Gainey has learned his lesson, and will no longer be devoting huge fraction of the salary structure to role players like he in that post, e.g. Francis Bouillon, Steve Begin, Georges Laraque. habs1119
Why sign 4th liners to long term deals? I like Stewart and what he brings. He's a solid depth signing for us this season capable of picking up the slack from Laraque being injured most of last season and likely this one as well. But next year Archer may be ready to step up and take this role and even possibly Laraques, so why not a one year? Let him show what he can do and he may get a long term deal at that point. He's just a sophmore now anyway
kfourni
Travis Moen, Glen Metropolit... Ya Metropolit was a waste of money, but I really think that we'll like Moen...the kid plays with a lot of heart...Stewart plays hard too so I see big things for him

In my opinion the Moen deal is about $300,000 - $400,000/season overpaid.

However, when you have to start over-paying 3rd and 4th liners to play here you have a serious problem. Either way, I think the Stewart deal is exactly what we should be paying a 4th line player. 1 year, $500K. Let him earn the extra couple thousand on his next deal.
