"We didn't talk about a specific number of games, but more about the role I would have with the team," Auld said. "They want me to help Carey Price get better and that is exactly what I want to do."

"It's a nice challenge for me and I plan on living up to it. The success of the team I am playing for is always my priority."

Looks like we signed the perfect backup for Price.

He knows his role in the NHL... He's no where near the same skill level as Price, but Auld does have experience, could be a real help to the kid.

i'm not so much interested in his skill level just that he knows his place on the team. The back up is like the 4th line players. you have to know where your place is on the team and not get upset when your sitting on the bench.

Here's my problem with this. Auld was never a star goalie or a solid starter and therefore, he has nothing to teach Carey. I would have preferred someone who spent years as a starter in NHL but is too old or too slow to be a starter now that can give Carey tips and advice of the challenges ahead. For me, this signing does nothing to help Carey other than to hand him the number one spot without competition.

He actually has as much/more experience in that regard than Ellis does. Auld did start 64 games 1 year. I agree with you on what would probably be ideal but I guess it just didn't materialize.

I wasn't talking about Ellis though. The organization has decided that Carey is our starter and our future which is fine by me. All I care about is that we win games and Carey develops. He's not going to do it with Auld mentoring him. Biron, Turco or even Theodore would have been ideal candidates to mentor him. Guys that are over the hill but at one point were on top and still want to play in the NHL.

I understand what you're saying and while I think Auld is fine I also think we kind of jumped the gun a bit, could have waited the market out and probably got an even better goalie for an equally cheap contract.

Turco IMO wouldn't have signed in Montreal on July 1 to be a back up, he'd explore starting first but come July 5th - 6th maybe he's just looking for a place to land and you think think that in the back of his mind if he's going to sign to be a "backup" he'd rather do it in a city that has a young starting goalie as they're known to struggle at times.

Biron, I'm not sure, could be the 2 years or could be that they think Auld is a better goalie ATM. I was pro Biron. I don't think he's a huge upgrade on Auld but I do think he is one.

Theodore, I think would be a tough situation. He was a hero here and rightfully so. I guess it would be nice to be able to pull out the old 60 jersey again though.

I still don't mind Auld, he started for a year, he's played in the playoffs (lost a game 7 in OT at a young age. I think he can help.

Also worth mentioning as Insideout says, Martin did coach Auld and likely has a good idea of what we're getting here. Could have been a factor in choosing him over Biron.

This was probably the hidden factor.

I really don't mind this signing. To me, the backup position is less about what Auld can teach Carey and more about Auld showing Carey how to carry yourself during highs and lows by virtue of his age and experience. Auld, by now, knows exactly what it's like to be a backup. He's not someone who expects to start 60 games and who will get unhappy / out of rhythm if he's not in the driver's seat. He should be very comfortable with 20-25 games this season. Also, he's a big goalie, and with the upcoming reduction in equipment size, it's possible PG wanted to go with bigger goalies at both positions.

True, I am totally for this signing. Auld won't be looking to steal the #1 job from Carey and won't give him competition like Halak and Huet did. This time Carey has the #1 spot all to himself and he's going to get to prove himself. Auld is just there to support him and teach him things to improve him not necessarily physically (how to play the game) but maybe mentally (how to focus after allowing a dumb goal, what not to worry about, etc) as weepingminotaur said. Hopefully the two have a good relationship throughout the year.

I have to disagree here... he has many years of pro league experience, more then any other goalie Price has been paired up with in his young career. And by your logic, most goalie coaches in the NHL arn't qualified to be in that position.

Also, maybe you have heard the saying.. "those who can't, teach."

Totally agree. The best coaches turn out to be fringe players that have a lot of time to study the game.
