2009-10 Battle Between The Pipes

I agree, it is clearly too early to start this thread... and yet i did it anyway to limit the arguing elsewhere in the forum on this topic

Good point. Between the Halak thread, the Price thread, and the Manny Fernandez signing rumour thread... Well, let's just say this conversation needs its very own place to develop. ;)

It is never too early to have these type of threads, and I agree this is the place to talk about our goalies (when comparing both of them). I never understood being a fan of ONLY one of our goalies, but now I understand.

I will never cheer against Price or hope that he loses, but I just enjoy watching the Habs play (that much more) when Halak is in nets. :P

This season is going to be lots of fun.

Go Halak!! ;)

I'm guessing a repeat of the same responses as last year.

Price fans will be happy he's playing all the games, and Halak fans will blame Price because Halak doesn't get many starts. Here's an idea, blame management

Without injuries, this thread will be short and one sided.

We have a great tandem, and an even better defense. Should be a great season.

I love both goalies, but I truly hope price emerges as a top 5 goalie this year.. the talent is there, and price succeeding is the only way this team goes anywhere. Because if price falters, halak comes in, and even if halak puts up all star numbers, I cant see them not eventually going back to price, and just ruining any consistency between the pipes.

I dont doubt halak can be an all star goalie, but i cant see him getting that chance here. So for the team's sake I just hope carey is strong out of the gates and stays consistent all season long. The sophomore slump has passed.

You really think it will be the same? I can't see Martin falling into the Carboaching trap. I feel fairly confident that Jaro will get his share of games (in my ideal world, he'd play roughly one game for every two games Carey played).

I'd prefer a 3:1, so barring injuries it would be Carey 62 and Halak 20 instead of Carey 54 and Halak 28. This is of course variable if Carey for a prolonged stretch does not play up to far.

To be honest, with the Olympics making the schedule a lot more compressed, I bet Halak gets 30 games, and most of those will be bottom feeders, just like how he started last season.

I'll let Martin know when to start him.

Halak's first start will be against the Flamers.

I'd have to disagree. I think Martin will play Halak every third or fourth game or after a back to back. If you look at the amount of games Martin plays his goalies I think it is fair to say Price will get a chance to play in 55-65 games and Halak will see 20-25, that is if Price does not struggle.

07-08 Tomas Vokoun 69 - Craig Anderson 17

06-07 Ed Belfour 58 - Alex Auld 27 - Craig Anderson 5

05-06 Roberto Luongo 75 - Jamie McLennan 17

03-04 Patrick Lalime 57 - Martin Prusek 29 - Ray Emery 3

02-03 Patrick Lalime 67 - Martin Prusek 18 - Ray Emery 3

01-02 Patrick Lalime 61 - Jani Hurme 25 - Martin Prusek 1 - Simon Lajeunesse 1

00-01 Patrick Lalime 60 - Jani Hurme 22 - Mike Fountain 1

One thing Martin isn't afraid of doing is benching his number one. Anderson had a nice little run there last Feb, for a while I wasn't sure if Tomas was injured or dead.

EDIT: He's also the type off coach to play his starter until his hot streak is over.

I agree 100% weep... I don't favor Halak over Price, I'd just like to see him get his fair share of games. Halak's trying to get his career going as well. If anyone's noticed, he's actually a pretty solid goalie when he got a few games under his belt. If it wasn't for him stealing us a few games last season-while the rest of the team was out to lunch on the western road trip-we wouldn't have made the playoffs. Halak was on the ball and the only one who's head was actually in the game. It was his play that got the team back in competitive form.

I'd like to see both goalies succeed this season. But for this to happen they both have to play. By play, I don't mean once every 3 weeks. It's a long season and Price could benefit from some time off, specially if we're counting on him for the playoffs. Let Halak play, get some wins under his belt, give him some confidence as well as value. Price isn't anywhere near the Brodeur/Luongo status, where he can play 70+ games (not yet).

Halak needs to play, for his benefit, for the teams benefit and for Price's. Like i said before, a little healthy competition never hurt anyone and could really kick both of their careers into gear.

Martin actually wasn't the coach for the Panthers last season, it was actually Peter DeBeor. Also Tomas wasn't benched he missed 20 games with a thumb injury. Not saying Martin won't bench his starter, just from looking at his past coaching records it looks like he plays his #1 guy 60-70 games a season.

In Bob's ideal world Carey will play 60 games.

In my ideal world Halak will play 50 games.

In the real world, Price will most probably play 75% of the games before the all star break. Depending on his performance Martin will either continue with the 3:1 ratio OR Halak will be given his long due opportunity to run away with the job in late jan/early feb.

I don't see how anyone could want Halak to start more than Price. I love Halak, and I think the best thinkg for him is to be traded away and get a legit shot at being a starting goaltender. Price is still only TWENTY ONE YEARS OLD. He has a bunch of NHL experience (regular and post season) and will msot likely continue to develop. He's a baby when it comes to tenders, i mean Thomas/Nabokov/Lundqvist/Kipper/Backstrom etc etc etc all of them became staple number ones later in their careers...

Pretty soon other teams will be looking for their next big goalie to take to them to the Cup. Mean while the Canadiens will build around theirs!

Prime example is the NJ Devils. They have built around a great Brodeur since the late 90's, and look what it's done for them.

Mediocre teams with a solid tender is all it takes to win the cup, well having Malkin and Crosby on one team could help

Well... I always thought it was good defensive teams with solid goaltending that could win a Cup. Having Price, who as you say, is still a baby is a good place to start. It's not often that goaltenders that young have two years of post-season experience already. That's only going to help him get better as he progresses.

The fact remains that Price is still very young and in the process of developing his game at a time when most of the league's established goalies were either doing the same or not even in the NHL. When you bring up a young player into a position like goalie, you have to know that struggling and inconsistency are prices you'll have to pay. Fleury didn't solidify until age 24.

Mock it however you like, but age is a legitimate topic of discussion where Price is concerned.
