S-Bah
From canadiens website: The other Andre: Andreas Engqvist thrilled the crowd by notching the shootout clincher, but the big Swede has bigger plans. “Leaving Europe is something I wanted to do because playing in the NHL has always been my dream. I’ll do whatever it takes to get there,” vowed the 6-foot-4 center, who also chipped in with an assist. “I’ll play in Hamilton if I have to and besides the AHL is the closest you can get to the NHL. It will be a good way for me to learn the North American game, too.” That's good news it may be pretty difficult to get a roster spot on the Habs this season. ChitownHabby
Another youngster nipping at the veterans heels. This is what the Habs organization has been lacking for a long time, a bunch of hungry kids that actually seem to want to overthrow the veterans in a HEALTHY man's man competition. I am anxious to follow the progress of a lot of these kids in camp and extremely curious to see how many of them come up for a cup of coffee this year and push harder to make the jump next year. S-Bah
I can see a line for Hamilton with Andreas,Andrew Conboy and Ian Schultz, lots of size on that line they would give Engqvist lots of room with those guys on his line. S-Bah
Engqvist with his size and talent should make the Habs lineup before the season ends or out of camp next season.
S-Bah
The Habs certainly have a few different prospects that look like NHLers. Andreas with Pacioretty and Palushaj as a powerplay unit seems to be working for the Bulldogs.
js2
Meh, he doesn't really look like anything special so far. I'm hoping to see more from him as the season goes on though.
jennifer_rocket
Some of the board members seem pretty high on Andreas. Should we actually expect him to make the NHL in the next few seasons and be a contributing member of the Montreal Canadiens? Just because he's an interesting prospect with size from Sweden (Remember, not everyone is as luck as the Detroit Redwings) doesn't mean he's going to be second line material. Heck, he might not even make it as a checking centre.

You're probably right. I cannot remember the last time we gave a prospect a legitimate chance at the centre position? Lapierre? Hardly, since he's now been moved to the wing, I think. Chipchura? He lasted all of 10 games. Eller? Seems to be playing every position BUT centre. Andreas is going to have to show something pretty special, IMO, to get a shot supplanting our annual $750,000 signing/1-year deal guy (this year, Halpern) who plays 3rd line centre. jennifer_rocket
Point taken, but would you really rather have Enqvist in the line-up right now over Halpern as our 3rd line center? No, but in a few years I might want to see Andreas have a spot on the team instead of [insert name of cheap veteran forward here]. But that would almost imply a shift in management, to let prospects play in the NHL at the risk of floundering for a few seasons and earning some decent draft choices. We're much too afraid to do that. We'd rather suffer through 7th-10th finishes for eternity.

S-Bah
I would much rather our prospects learn the pro game in the AHL before they come up and get knocked from pillar to post and vice versa. They learn to keep their heads up and not get into positions that leave them prone to errors that create scoring chances for the opposition.Hamilton is the best choice until they are deemed ready for the speed and rigors of the NHL game. S-Bah
Andreas will most certainly be up with Montreal and quite likely a starter next season. His two-way play is pretty good and has been noticed in Hamilton a young team but leading their Div.and defence being a big reason they are on top.Hard to say but 3rd line center should be his to lose next year.Go Habs Go,Go Dogs Go! Nine1One
Welcome to the big club Andreas He just got called up PRESS RELEASE MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens announced today that centreman Andreas Engqvist has been called up from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs. Engqvist will take part in the team practice on Thursday, at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard. The 6’04’’, 197 lbs centreman, aged 23, appeared in 38 games with the Bulldogs this season, registering 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists). One of his goals was scored on the power play. Engqvist has also collected 73 shots on goal, maintained a +5 plus/minus differential and served 10 penalty minutes. Engqvist played with Djurgarden of the Swedish Elite League from 2005-06 to 2009-10, recording 58 points (29-29-58) and 74 penalty minutes in 181 games. He also amassed 4 points (1-3-4) in 9 games in the 2010 World Hockey Championship in Germany. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Engqvist signed with the Canadiens as a free agent on July 13, 2009

BigTed3
A bit of a surprise as a call-up. He adds some size but he's a center and he's not a scoring forward, so he doesn't replace either Cammalleri nor Pacioretty. If anything, he seems to be more of a replacement for Halpern as a 4th line center. I would assume Pouliot jumps up to play with Gomez and Gionta and AK plays with Eller and Plekanec, but with guys like DD, Darche, Moen, Pyatt, and now Engqvist playing the lower two lines, it's not that re-assuring. The depth really fell right out of the line-up, and I don't think the top two lines are stellar enough to sustain the attack without some balance to the line-up from the bottom half. MIASUN
I hope he plays, this is his tryout for 3rd line center in waiting status, he can leapfrog Maxwell with a strong showing. Halpern is a very good player but I like the idea of a big right handed 3rd/4th line center for next season that is already signed and is not that young.(will be 24 by then) I'm interested to see if he's able to hang onto the puck and stand the physical play better than Maxwell. This move really confirms the Habs stance on Maxwell... Eller's acquisition put him back a notch and DD and Engqvist have both jumped him in the pecking order. I think this spells the end of Maxwell here.
