Toffer13
I feel that a great way to show the tradition of the Habs and to show that no one player is bigger than the team is to revert to past measures and remove the player names from the home jerseys. In the past they never had names on the jerseys, just numbers, and the fans knew who the players were. Look at baseball with the Yankees and Red Sox. Both teams have great traditions and even now there are no names on the home jerseys. I think this would be a great move for the Canadiens to make, especially in their centennial season. Now the shops could still sell jerseys with names, and sell the shirts with names and get their money. However, fans will know who wears what number if they are fans and won't need to see the name on a home jersey to know. That's why I think leaving the name on the visiting jersey is good so fans in other cities will be able to know who is who. I am all for tradition and feel that it is sorely missing in today's game. This would be one small way to show that as usual the Habs know how to respect tradition. What do you think?
roy_133
It's definitely a neat idea but I'd be shocked if it actually happened. I understand your point about the Red Sox and Yankees but baseball is a bit different because you really don't rely on numbers to identify players ever, guys are generally in a specific position at all times. Hockey is a little more all over the place and while your idea may cater to the "true" fans it may leave some of the casual fans in the dust. Larry-Launstein-Jr
From what I understand, it is required under the rules by the NHL. LOL Tradition Last I heard, since those events took place, the Red Sox have won 2 World Series! And they beat the dreaded Yankees and Cardinals along the way, and the Colorado Rockies, too. Toffer13
well if it's required under the NHL rules, then there really isn't much to be done. i doubt it would ever happen even if there wasn't a league rule, and i will guess a big part of the reason would be the casual fans. however all casual fans in any sport begin without knowing all the players. so it can be done where they enjoy the team and a player and will find out who they are. plus with all the merch being sold with the name & number, it would speed up the learning process. OF course they need Names and Numbers on the back of jerseys for 2 reasons: 1) All the changes in the off season and 2) How else is the souvenier shop going to justify charging extra for Jerseys if they can't put the name and number on the back? ryderfan1
I think the team, as an organization and business, wants to have the broadest appeal possible....and as such, wants to make the game accessible to all. In that context, names on jerseys are important. I don't know about you guys, but I've been to the Bell Center and found myself sitting next to a families in which only the dad is a "true fan," while the little kids and spouse perhaps don't quite follow everything,--or groups of folks who want to catch a hockey game but don't follow everything in the hockey world...or some similar scenario. To all the non-hardcore fans, having names on jerseys is helpful, and makes everyone feel like they actually "get" what's going on, who's scored the big goal, etc... I'm ok with that. I realize that not all fans are as insane as us, and might get Gorges confused with Moen or whatever...

Manatee-X
Another thing to take into account with modern hockey is that the helmets make it a lot harder to recognize the players if you don't have their numbers memorized. I don't see this ever happening in football for the same reason, whereas in baseball, soccer or basketball there might be more of a chance. Also, when someone steps up to the plate in baseball there's all kinds of time to post his name, number and stats up on the big jumbotron so that everyone can follow what's going on. Hockey's a little quicker. Not to say that it wouldn't be cool to see for those of us who do know the numbers, though (or at least did until we brought in half a team's worth of new players). Maybe they could do it on speacial occasions, like when they break out the old-timey 'CA' jerseys.
thefooligan5
I think it would have been neat if the throwback jerseys from last season and this season had no nameplates because their forebears had none, but as a regular occurence I'm not sure how well it would work. Personally speaking I don't find the name plates make a difference unless you get a close-up shot. The numbers are visible at all times however but again for the casual fan I can understand wanting it to be easier to identify a player. And then quite often a new player will move in and take an old players number from season to season so it can get quite confusing.

risteenhuis
With so many new players on the team I think that I would even need the names!!!
LeafHater
i think the fact that the game is heavily televised wouldn't help either, that would mean the announcers would need to memorise all the names of the visiting players. i mean there's some teams we play often and recognise a couple of numbers here and there but it would be tough. plus the names are on the jerseys and everytime i see 21 i keep having the reflex of saying "go higgins" lol. Thankfully, that's starting to go away
bell75
If its not names and numbers it will be advertising! But seriously folks, I like the names and numbers. It helps me with unfamiliar players from the opposition and with all players having to wear helmets now sometimes they are hard to tell apart if you are unfamiliar with other aspects of their play (like skating, linemates, etc).
