Dintrox12
The fact that the players paid 13% of their salaries back to the league passed virtually unnoticed in the media. This year about 25% of player salaries will go into escrow and a percentage (or all) could return to the league if revenue drops. With the hit to the wallet, The players and the NHLPA are finally cluing into the fact that their salaries are deeply affected by decisions of the NHL. Last season, was the first season that the players lost some of their escrow money. Since the NHL, is running the Coyotes and several other teams are on financial thin ice players will be on the hook for the revenue shortfall. I'm not surprised, this is a recession, thats the whole point of the Escrow account is to protect owners in bad times.

When was their last TV deal negotiated? 2007?
roy_133
Shouldn't NHL revenues be recession proof? When was their last TV deal negotiated? 2007? Well the NHL is gate driven and obviously advertisers have less dollars to spend so there will definitely be a hit. No league is recession proof. DA_Champion
Well, 2009-2010 should be better, the Canadian dollar is skyrocketing, now at 97 cents. Canadian teams constitute ~30% of league revenues, so if the Canadian dollar rises 20% that's another 6% overall.
