lesfoldi
chicago wolves of the AHL? i guess. He may be 48, but i saw him play in the last couple of years and he still had it...hes in great shape. I thought he got injured last year and that was it for him, but guess not! to me, as long as a defensemen knows where to be and can out smart the opposition, your golden. I would have love to see chelios this year, especially since the start of this season. truth of the matter is he probably rather play in the AHL then here! MrJGoodTimes
Personally I think Chelios is on roids or something. It is amazing the strength and endurance he posseses. if at 48 he wants to continue to play hockey... I'd say let him. I mean why is it Hockey players are considered too old to work at 40 but everyone else has to work till 65? I'd give him a shot and let him finish his career where it started, with the Montreal Canadians.

Even if you work a physical construction job, it doesn't even hold a candle to what these players endure. Hockey is aggressive, it takes a lot of skill, strength mentally and physically and a lot of endurance. There's a big difference between typing memos and attending an NHL training camp. FlHabsFan
The guy still has the drive to play. And what team wouldnt want someone of his caliber to help mentor their prospects. While, yes, he is taking the spot of a prospect, imagine what he brings to your young guys.

whalerfan
Ummmm....yeah , here's another whaler angle but it pertains to this conversation....... GORDIE HOWE IN THE 1979 NHL SEASON 51 YEARS OLD - PLAYED ALL 80 GAMES GOALS...........15 ASSISTS........26 It might have made sense to sign him for one season.....chelios comes back home, would have been cool. DeepNYR
Get used to seeing guys playing well into their 40's. Players are taking so much better care of themselves than they did just 10 years ago. New technologies are letting guys heal quicker. You have junior and college players consulting with nutritionists. Players train 365 days a year. Given that NHL players are the best athletes in the world, they're going to be able to continue to play for a long time. Without a doubt, Crosby, Malkin, Ward, Ovechkin, etc will be playing for another 20 years. To get to the NHL, you have to have an undying passion for the game. Chelios didn't get to where he is without having an undying passion for the game. He would never have been on the 1986 Habs, 2002 and 2008 Red Wings without his willingness to make the necessary sacrifices. The older I get the more excited I get to see older guys prolong their playing careers. It kind of makes me look forward to getting older.
Dintrox12
Chelios' off season work out routine would wind many 20 year old players. After working out he would often take a 40 mile bike ride or go 16 miles paddle surfing. Zonave
It's really impressive, and I love Chelios. I think he is incredible, and if he can play well, like he can, I say let him play. However, for a lot of people he is ruining his career. His statistics are going down on his career, and at a glance, he is a lot less impressive than what he used to be because of it. Cant play like you are 25 forever. And its got to be harder when guys playing now are starting off strong right out of the gate. Like Ovie, Crosby, and yes Stamkos. The league was badly watered down back then. No 51 year old is playing 80 games in today's league, even the great Gordie Howe.
whalerfan
true , it was watered down BUT still, he was 51 years old. I still give the true great one much respect. tmash
Memo to Chris: End your career on a high note... Demoting yourself from the NHL to AHL is not a high note. Maybe he likes playing the game and isn't doing this to feed his ego? If he wants to play and someone wants to pay him to play, why does it bother you? All the talk about high-notes and everything in the NHL is meaningless to me. Players should play until they are ready to retire, which for some will be at their peak and others once no one is willing to play them.
