Dintrox12
Ovie was fined for slew footing in the last minute of a game versus the Thrashers. should He have been suspended?
Dintrox12
I for one am sick of the star players being treated differently. Ovie gets a fine anyone else would get a suspension. Colon Campbell used the excuse that Ovie isn't a repeat offender or a dirty player. However Pleks isn't a dirty player or repeat offender and he got 2 games last year for a slew foot. Malkin instigates a fight in the dying moments of a game. No suspension. Crosby third man in and punches a guy in the nether regions several times. No suspension and no comment. he received a 2 minute roughing penalty. Why have rules if you pick and choose who they apply to?

Kubby31
Ovie's my favorite star player in the league at this time....but I'll be the first to be vocal that he or any other star in this league should not be treated any different when it comes to these types of circumstances...all players should be held to the same/one rule in which it is applied. But,come on folks,we just did not fall off the cabbage truck here... It's unfortunate but we all know by now that the N.H.L. at times allows different standards to certain elite players, compared to the average one...IMO. thefooligan5
I don't know what the rules are but I've seen plenty of comparable plays gone without a penalty, fine or suspension. Our own Tomas Plekanecs did the same thing last season without reproach. I just wish we could get some consistency in the officiating. I think a slew foot is definitely a fineable offense but I don't think it is as bad as these brutal body checks to the head which are deemed perfectly legal by the establishment, the officials, the commentators et al. So should Ovie have been suspended? Yes, provided that slew-fotting a player a suspendable offense in the NHL's eyes.

When Pleks got the suspension he was told "we're only giving you 2 games because its your first infraction" - Ovechkin is a hell of a lot more physical a player than pleks - he's made questionable hits before. SteenIsThaFuture
This is more than just a star effect though, Ovechkin draws a heck of a lot of people on the road and for TV. It may not be fair, but thats business. However on that note, Colin did call Ovechkin and warn him that next time there may be a much steeper penalty. Lidstrom/Ovie/ Crosby They'll aways be the exception to the rule.....It's how the league is run....as you say moneypuck....all comes down to $$$$$$$$$$ at the gate. Did colon warn him when he took Gonchar out with a knee on knee hit last year? or he ran briere from behind a couple years ago?
