#94 - Tom Pyatt 2009-10

Only one year?

We control him well beyond this coming season so let's let him prove himself at the NHL level for a full season before giving a bottom 6 player a multi year deal. As for him being a 2nd line guy, I really don't see it. I like him and I love the contract but I see no reason to pay him more money to lock him up for a couple years.

Really liking that Pyatt was resigned. I know he can be replaced, but man a 300k paycut? He's a better person than I am.

An excellent deal for us and a sign that Tom wants to be here. For someone called up from the AHL mid-season, he didn't go missing when up against the best in the Conference and delivered "exactly what it says on the tin" - committment, "yes coach whatever you want me to do coach", effort, enthusiasm, energy and a little bit of offense.

Once again, this sort of deal shows the guys at Hamilton that the big club will recognize and reward hard work, determination and improvement. Can you run a sports psychology programme for less than 50k a month these days?

Why is anyone even remotely negative about this deal? If such players were "a dime a dozen" for the price, why do we have to keep looking for them?

Why keep looking for them because toronto has almost all of them.

Well, I'm not negative. I like the cap hit and the term.

Because you should always be looking for lower-tier players. In other words, you should always be cycling through them, not locking them up to long-term deals that will inevitably come back to bite you in the rear end (see Begin, Steve for more information).

I know people don't like to hear it because the fourth-line guys are usually likable blue-collar types, but they are disposable. Eminently so. Whether Pyatt stays or goes is irrelevant to me. What matters is that whoever fills his position does so cheaply on a short-term contract that keeps him producing to the max every season. Tom had half a good season in the NHL, that's it. He had no leverage in contract negotiations since (to my knowledge) he's a first-time RFA and therefore not eligible to go to arbitration. He didn't sign this deal out of the goodness of his heart. He signed it because it guarantees that he'll make NHL-level money regardless of whether he's in Montreal or Hamilton, and because he knows damn well that a 23-year-old fourth-line player with almost no NHL experience has no business demanding more.

Hockey is a weird sport from a fan perspective. I don't see football fans making a god out of the long-snapper, or baseball fans worshiping a journeyman pinch-hitter. But in hockey, that fourth-line forward who plays 10 minutes a night is only one lucky goal short of being a hero.

Good 3rd or 4th line players are like a good Moderator , dime a dozen , we appreciate the job they do and enjoy thier point of view but can be easily replaced if need be. ;):P

Careful, my ban finger is getting itchy. :P :P :P :P

GreekHockeyCoach has told me many times that I'm disposable cannon fodder. :D

All I gotta say is that this guy is one heck of a hard worker (*cough* unlike Sergei* cough*) and worked his way up from the AHL to earn a spot on the Habs roster. He's valuable come playoff time and especially on the penalty kill. Good signing, better depth.
