franck5890
Well if you read the article, the writer says that his rankings are based on three things: 1. Average regular-season attendance percentage based on arena capacity 2. Regular-season television viewership as a percentage of the team's metro area 3. Team merchandise sales
29Dryden29
We hardly get tv coverage other than on RDS compared to the Laffs so that was our biggest strike I am thinking. But I feel that we should have along with the Laffs been one two.
ScottGomez
"Pens fans emerged the most fanatical. They consumed the most team merchandise last season, led by jerseys sales of NHL poster boy Sidney Crosby and Art Ross Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin." Blergh. But I feel that we should have along with the Laffs been one two. Every Habs game is available nationally on RDS, the Leafs have a lot of games shown regionally on Sportsnet Ontario that's not even available to the vast majority of the country without center ice. Also the Leafs show a handful of games on LeafsTV. Their TV exposure is no better than the Habs.

TORHABSFAN
This article is sooo flawed. Here are my biggest beefs. 1. The attandance on percentage. -When team post false capicities this is going to mess this all up. What do I mean by false capicity? If you list your capicity as 18800 as the Leafs do then post an attandce figure one night at 19234 and the next at 19213 thats *****. I am tired of seeing 103% attandace figures. the true capicty is just that capicity... what is the total of avialable ticket inventory which can be sold. cleary the Leafs TRUE capicty is somewhere over 19000.but if in game 1 they sell 19553 and the next game they sell 19000 my question is what happened to the other 553 tickets? To me thats not a sell out at all but the Leafs will say our capicty is 18880 so we sold 101% of our tickets.. *****! and the Leafs are not the only team who does this the Hawks, Pens, Flyers and many others do it as well.. They justify it by not including standing room and other areas in capictiy.. but lets be fair, if you included it in attandace you MUST included it in capicity. Montreal does not do this. The Bell Centre's capicty is 21,273 each game 21,273 tickets are sold. the attandace is 100% every night, yet the Habs are pinalized in these ranking by not being abled to post a capicty over 100%? the point of them using percemtage was to not punish teams for having samller rinks, but instead they punish teams who don't have standing rooms and false capictys? 2. TV viewership. not zll teams are given the same oppertuinty to draw viewers because the big networks don`t show their games equaly. The Leafs are always shown nationaly on CBC. are all the people who are atching fans ofcorse not they watch because its the only game on TV they can get. If the Habs where given the same oppertuinty then I am sure they would have equal viewer ship. 3. Merchandise... I find it funny that they donèt post the Leafs rank in merchandise. that just looks fishy to me. And do Centienal bricks count.. they should and the Habs made huge cash on those I know mine cost near 900 bucks. Also I know that not everyone who buys a Penuins Crosby Jersey is a Penguins fan.. they want Crosby not the Pens.. If Crosby was a Coyotee they would have higher merchandise sales then the Pens. 4-Genral Hockey fan impact on these numbers-This is supposed to be a study who judge each teams fans, but it doesnt do it at all.. Why because general hockey fans have to much of an impact. General hockey fans who just watch the games they get on TV ie the Leafs on CBC but they are not actual Leaf fans. Or General hockey fans who buy a Crosby Jersey but dont actually have loyalty to the Pens. Or even genral hockey fans who just go to hockey game because of free tickets or something to do.. they dont actualy support that home team. Or in the case of Toronto Buisness men who go to entertain clients and dont even watch the game! 5-Reality- Lets judge fans on passion as well. Last night I was flipping the channels between the Habs and Iles in Long Island and the Leafs and Briuns in Toronto.. (mostly watching the Habs of corse). The Iles had 5000 fans in the rink due to a snow storm most of these fans where Habs fans.. The arena was actualy very loud chants, cheers and singing beeing loudly heard through out the night.. In Toronto 19000plus fans and the home team is winnging and the arena is dead. No even half the noise as the 5000 fans in Long Island. I have been to 100 games plus at the ACC and MLG, I have also been to 50 gmaes plus at the Bell Centre and Forum and a few games in Buffalo and Ottawa.. I can tell you the ACC is always dead dead dead! When the Habs are in town its a bit better but still cant compare to a preseason game vs. Florida on a Wensday night in Montreal... let alone a Saturday night game in the regualr season vs. rival or Playoffs. Their have been soo many other surveys by players and fans all of which name the Habs fans as the best in the NHL.. and they are based on atmosphere, noise and passion true test of the word FANS. The Leafs can have this flawed finacial test because they will always have far more success on the spread sheets then the standing sheets.

It is not avialble all across Canada and in places it is like here in Toronto it must be purchased as part of a $7.00 package with our digital cable.. or satlitle. this can not been compared equaly to National CBC coverage whic can be viewed with basic cable or even with Rabit ears (Air) for God`s sake. not all people spend the cash on TV not every one has it to spend. but anyone with a cheap old even black and whote TV and no cable can view those Saturday night Leaf games. Also TSN games which are national may not be avilable with Rabit ears but are much cheaper the that RDS package. and part of more general and comanly used TV package. Also the majority of this county is English.. Not all English fans outside Quebec are hardcore enough to pay to watch the Habs in a Langaue they do not understand.. I buy RDS but I understand those who don`t. Our fan base is split by language that has a huge imapct on TV... no other NHL team has that to enwhere near this effect.. The Sens a little but not much. ElCapitan_mtl
The article actually says....For the 2008-09 season, we ranked teams based on average regular-season home game attendance as a percentage of arena capacity, regular-season localtelevision viewers as a percentage of the team’s metro area population and team merchandise sales. RDS broadcasts on a national level but viewership to their games outside local viewership would not be recognized in this ranking. So in other words, Pittsburg had more fans watching their games locally than Montreal perhaps. I`d say that merchandise sales would have been the deciding factor, as they won the cup and Cup winners generally sell more merchandise that year than any other team. What I find peculiar is how Philadelphia ranked above us.... I wonder who has the most fans on a worldwide level.... I wonder who has the most diehard fans.... I wonder who has the most fanatical fans.... I wonder who has the oldest fans, fans who are the sons of fans who were the sons of fans..... I wonder who has the most loyal fans.... I wonder who has the proudest fans, even after almost two decades of failure..... Did this question even have to be asked. The idea that they could develop a system to rank fans and not come up with Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Boston, Detroit, Philly, New York, Chicago, Edmonton is ridiculous....everyone knows who has the best fans. Innis_Mor
The reported survey is an attempt at assessing the current relative commercialization of the teams. The survey I like and that matters most (to me) is the one the Montreal Canadiens & Bell Centre wins every year ... a survey of the NHL players of what venue is the best to play an NHL hockey game in (fans, atmosphere, etc.). It is always Montreal, and always by a landslide.
strollerhnjhjjhjkind
it makes no doubt to me that the habs fan are the best fans in the NHL. it should be based on the way fans act with other fans, the sales, the tickets, etc. Flyers wouldn't be there, oh no. their fans are so... anyway. Johnyc
I have been to 17 different NHL arenas now and the best fans are in Montreal. I live in Ottawa and had season tickets (Section 206, Row C) for four seasons at the Bell Centre. To me, it was an easy choice. I would rather drive two hours and fight traffic then go to a game in the worst (yes, worse) arena in the NHL for fan interaction. Jeez, I have been to games in Ottawa where the Canadiens fans outnumbered the Sens fans 3-1. Games in Ottawa between the Sens and Panthers fan can yell something out loud in the third deck and the entire building can hear your conversation. Its like the fans are afraid to cheer. The loudest game I ever went to was game seven against the Bruins (we won 5-0). Price had the shutout. What sold me on Montreal though was a night, two years ago. It was a December game against the Lightning. We left Ottawa around 3pm and arrived mid-way through the first period (5 hours)! The snow was so bad, I could hardly see 50 ft in front of the car on the 417. When we arrived and took our seats, I was amazed to discover that I could not see a single empty seat in the entire building! I felt a duty to attend these games and am honoured to be part of something so special. Back to the topic though, in my opinion, I thought the fans in Minnesota were amazing. I thought the Flyers fans were the most rude, followed by the Sabres. The ACC in Toronto is filled were corporate types, while Ottawa reminds me of a morgue. Some of the more interesting venues are Atlanta (announce icing, off sides, etc) and were I heard a fan say to another, "are they going to stop the game, that player left his baton on the field." (A thrasher had broken their stick and dropped it on the ice). The mecca in NYC is cool (the garden), while Newark, although the worst city, boasts the nicest arena (so fan friendly, great concourse and a nice touch with all the minor hockey jerseys). The Isles had the nicest cars in the valet (Mercedes, Bentlely, Ferrari, etc), but the worst concessions and smallest rink since Landsdowne park in Ottawa (10,000 capacity). I have just turned thirty and am looking forward to catching all the NHL arenas in the next few years. I will report back if I find something better then the Bell Centre. Telly_39_s_1
I'd really like to visit all the NHL arenas sometime, but sadly I'm stuck in Montreal until I finish my education and get a steady income. As of now, the only away arenas I've visited have been Ottawa (boring), New York (loud and rude, but fun), Uniondale (okay, though some seats are HORRIBLE), and Boston (B's fans are just adorable). As was mentioned before me, the article seems to be flawed as everyone knows we're the best (most bipolar?) fans Attendance is always full, but so has been Pittsburgh. TV - yes we have more viewership nationwide (likely) however the ranking is done as a percentage of their metropolitan area (meaning, the city and closely-surrounding area), and merchandise sales only cover the year not all time. I think Rocket said it best. This is just some random dude with his own arbitrary ranking system. His numbers are right, but its essentially just his opinion on how to rank the teams. every saturday the whole country is subjected to leaf games...i think that boosts them quite a bit... As mentioned, these rankings have nothing to do with national viewership, only local, and its simply as a percentage. Montreal has a metro population pretty much 50% larger than that of Pittsburgh.
