The Washington Capitals have traded team captain Chris Clark and defenceman Milan Jurcina to the Columbus Blue Jackets for winger Jason Chimera.

''We are pleased to add Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina to our hockey club,'' General Manager Scott Howson said in a press release. ''Both are veteran players who we believe will contribute significantly to our team. We'd also like to thank Jason Chimera for his contributions to the Blue Jackets organization both on and off the ice over the past four-plus seasons.''

The veteran Clark is in his ninth season in the National Hockey league and fifth with the Capitals. Drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round in 1994, Clark was traded to Washington for a conditional draft pick in 2005. He totaled 60 goals and 63 assists (123 points) in 240 games with Washington. This season, he has four goals and 11 assists in 38 games played.

Jurcina, 26, played four seasons with the Capitals. Drafted by the Boston Bruins in the eight round in 2001, Jurcina was shipped to the Capitals in 2008 for a fourth round selection. In 27 games this season, the Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia, native has zero goals and four assists. He has six goals and 30 assists in 211 games in a Caps uniform.

Chimera, 30, is an 11-year pro who has played 461 NHL games between Columbus and Edmonton. He has recorded eight goals and nine assists with a minus- 7 rating while playing all 39 games this season.

I think they felt it would have been wrong to strip him of his captaincy. Don't forget that Clark was injured all of last year. The right thing was done, Ovie deserves to be captain.
