Don Cherry movie set to debut on CBC

"Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story" is a new movie that chronicles the life of the bombastic hockey personality and offers a glimpse into it that few have seen or known about.

Cherry toiled in the minor leagues for 20 years and played just one NHL game -- with the Boston Bruins in 1955. The film, which was written and produced by his son, Tim Cherry, shows the Hockey Night In Canada pundit in a light that isn't exactly flattering.

"I was a jerk and a selfish guy -- there's no doubt about it," Cherry said. "Especially when I was coaching."

But Cherry eventually ascended to the position as one of the most prominent hockey people in Canada, and he gives full credit to his wife, Rose, who died in 1997 of cancer.

"If she hadn't of stuck with me, what would I have done? Not once did she ever complain. Not once," he said. "That means a lot to a guy that can't make the National Hockey League."

The four-hour television movie airs on CBC in two parts on Sunday, March 28 and Monday, March 29, both nights at 8 p.m. EDT.

I didn't see the movie but I have both of his books. They are both collections of stories from his life in hockey. In the second one, he talks about different things that are in the movie. Also, his daughter Cindy and son, Tim each have a chapter in the 2nd book and share stories from their childhood as they grew up with Don. They also talk about the movie. I'm hoping it comes out on DVD or BR. I'd like to see it now that I've read about it.
