Out of the frying pan…

canadiens.com

Things aren’t about to get any easier for the Habs.

After getting past Alex Ovechkin in the first round, the Canadiens will now face the NHL’s other poster boy, Sidney Crosby, in the second round. What are the Habs odds of slowing Sid the Kid? Maybe try copying and pasting whatever was written about the Canadiens’ chances prior to Round 1.

But seriously, could the
Jacques Martin
’s crew get it done one more time?

Ok, so the Penguins had their way with the Habs during the regular season, with the Canadiens mustering only a 1-3 mark against the defending Stanley Cup champs. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that Sidney and friends preyed on the diet or at least caffeine-free version of the Habs.

Clear benefactors of the Canadiens’ injury-riddled season, the Pens faced a Montreal lineup that included All-Star defenseman
Andrei Markov
only once (Pittsburgh actually lost that night at the Bell Centre). To put the Penguins regular-season mastery of the Habs into perspective, they faced Jay Leach and James Wyman as often as they did Markov.

That’s not to mention
Brian Gionta
. They faced him as often as they did Ryan White and David Desharnais. Nonetheless, the Penguins did win three of four games, outscoring Montreal by a 16-9 margin.

Perhaps more pertinent to how this series may unfold are both team’s sleeping patterns. While the Habs will arrive in Pittsburgh on Thursday with their equipment still damp from their Game 7 win over the Caps on Wednesday, the Pens have been resting comfortably for five days since eliminating the Senators in six.

Goaltending is always a good place to start when handicapping a playoff series. No word as to whether
Jaroslav Halak
is being fitting for a special asbestos lined Habs jersey for the second round, but the once-known goalie is now the talk of the blue paint in these playoffs. His counterpart is no slouch in this own right, with Marc-Andre Fleury looked solid against the Sens in Round 1 after having led Pittsburgh to the Cup last spring.

If career trends are more your thing, there are two Habs players who always have Penguins games circled on their calendars. One of those is Markov who has amassed 22 points in 26 games, the other is
Scott Gomez
who has torched Pittsburgh to the tune of 51 points in 59 games.

This series marks also the first time these teams have met in the playoffs since back in 1998, when the seventh-seeded Habs upset the No. 2 Penguins in six games in the first round in their only other postseason meeting.

Now, drop the puck already.

Hope you're 4 and 'oh' crb :)

Is there an upside to playing sooner rather than later so that they are still 'warmed up' or would more days for rest have been better? What ever it may be...friday, 7 o'clock, I hope we can start off solid.

i think in the habs' situation considering they're the underdogs big time, it's best that they play this soon to continue riding the high.

I'm still in shock... I can't believe that we're getting ready for round to against the pens, after beating the caps in 7.

What a wonderful feeling!

And to Hal Gill... Whatever you did against the Caps, it worked! Keep up the great work cos we're going to need your experience even more against your former team.

Go Habs Go!

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can do this, we really can, and the Pens know it as well. I'll have to fly home from work to catch the start of the game, but I've got a really good feeling about this :) Habs in 5!

"The error returned was:

You cannot vote in this poll" That's unfortunate, but I would have voted HABS WIN!

Thanx for the Terrific GDT ,,CRB,,,,,,always appreciated.

Let's show these Mellonheads that they have a fight on their hands,,,,,,they are well rested, but sometimes that can be a detriment. We may be battle scarred, but we ain't dead. It will be difficlt, but if we play smart,,,,we can send these birds back to Antartica.

i know I am sticking my neck out here (feel free to chop it off), but I wouldn't mind seeing Laps or Pyatt (only from the way they have been playing lately) get in the baby's face.

We took care of OV,,,let's do the same to you know who. NOTHING would make me happier. Let's make those bookies and poolies tear out their hair.

I see that almost everyone, picked the Caps to roll over us in 5 MAX. Now their picking the birds in 6, (so, they expect us to win 2 games  ). Adjustments will have to be made, but I think wee can do it.

GO HABBIES GO

Go's without saying great GDT CRB Love the pics

So now we start another round

Just guess what we have found

A team with guts grit and heart

Where every player doe's his part

Habs you made us so proud

We didn't know we had such a crowd

A few of us believed from day one

Some believed you wouldn't come

But you showed up with a plan in mind

They didn't know their deathbed was assigned

But now you have another giant to kill

Another team to confuse with your skill

We know the pundits are giving you no chance

But we didn't get here by the seat of our pants

We beat those Caps well and truly

We played our game and did it cooly

Now the Pens are our next foe

We don't care just GO HABS GO

GO HABS GO :D :D

CRB, another amazing game-day thread - i mean seriously, just top notch.

I have a feeling we will come out buzzing. I think Halak will play his game & I think there's a good, legitimate chance (if we can get to Fleury early) that we will win this game.

I think the key to the Penguins series is going to be to keep the buzz going. If Halak can manage to keep all or most of the pucks out of the net, maybe we can get into the penguin's heads.

As Ive said in other threads, I think we have a big advantage (at least based on the first round) In nets. I think we're pretty even in both defense and wingers (arguably we are slightly favored in both) but we are unbelievably outmatched at centre.

IF we are to find a way - any way - to win this series, we are going to need HUGE performances from the likes of Gomez, Plekanec and Moore. Frankly, I dont care if these 3 guys score a lot - if they can check their counterparts & keep them stymied, then I'll be happy.

The interesting thing about the Pens vs. Washington is that i dont think the Pens have anywhere near the quality of secondary scoring (after their Big 3 centres). Yes they have gotten some timely goals from guys like Guerin and Ponikarovsky, but they dont have the same sort of 'grinders with good hands' as Washington - and to me thats a very big plus.

Im not saying we have a great chance (although I do think the Pens can be beaten) but to be honest, I think we actually might match up better against the Pens at this stage than Philly or Boston.

GO HABS GO. We Believe!!!

I would like NOTHING better than to have a Hab lay out Cros., clean but DECK him, and/or Milkie. Show those birdbrains that we will NOT rollover at the sight of them. They put their pants, socks and skates on same as us.

I love the underdog role,,,,,,we have nothing to lose, and they have EVERYTHING to lose.

On edit,,,,,,I don't think that Fluery is all that great.....check out his stats.

I have been a Habs fan since '59, and I have seen a lot of Habs Stanley Cup wins in that time, But I have NEVER and I repeat NEVER, seen a Habs team play like they did in the past 4 games. This team is ALL heart, and have that willingness to sacrifice, and endure whatever it takes to make a hit, play, block a shot, or make a save.

They are truly commited to "go to the wall" to earn a win.

Cros, Milkie, Gonchar be darned,,,,,,if they want it,,,,,,they will HAVE to earn it.

Players whom I expect to elevate their game:

  • Plekanec
  • AK
  • Gomez
  • Pouliot

We simply have to get more production from these four players.

Absolutely - this is the time of year where your best truly need to be the best, and there's three names on that list that shouldn't have any excuses for not stepping up.

AK is the only player who still seems to show a lack of effort. or maybe it's just his style like Kovalev. If he doesnt fix it soon though...I won't be surprised to see Lapierre playing first line with #13 and #14. It will be another great move by Martin like the Moen move in the first round.

Can't wait for this, nobody is underestimating us anymore...a blessing or a burden? I don't see how it could be a blessing, as nice as it feels i think it just exposes how good we truly are...

also, habs fans we need to unite, Our logo is currently in a battle to become the best logo in the NHL...we need to vote to make sure we retain our crown for best logo! I'm slightly unsure of the rules for posting links, so I will tell you to go to ICETHETICS and VOTE for the habs logo, click on the VOTE tab at the top of the page, it's very easy to navigate....I am in no way affiliated with the site at all I just won't be able to sleep soundly if we get beat by the Hawks.

Did you know there is such a thing as a penguin called a *****

It doesn't shoot pucks or make a pass

It lives off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic

It doesn't fly but swims fantastic

It likes to live where it's hot

Some people think that's a load of rot

It lives on islands swim in bays

They call it a ***** because it neighs

Now the emperor penguin is sleek and tall

And there's the rock hopper cute and small

Now the Pennsylvania penguin is hard to see

But it looks awfully like a ***** to me

GO HABS GO :D :D

(Biology note the ***** is no longer called that it is now called the African penguin because so many other penguins make the same sound)

Hey why was that taken out that is the name of a penguin I was simply giving a biology lesson to my friends on here

GO HABS GO :D :D

If you can't work it out It's jack and sounds like pass

GO HABS GO :D :D
