Report: Gauthier Fires Scouts...

Recommended Posts

From Tony Marinaro's twitter:

HABS GM Pierre Gauthier has fired scouts Denis Morel, Dave Mayville, Pelle Eklund, Nikolai Vakourov, Antonin Routa, and Gordie Roberts.

Does that mean they were doing something wrong?

bout time to give the scouting an overhaul, really overdue

Are these amateur scouts or pro scouts he fired? If the latter, good on Gauthier for cleaning house, as our pro scouting has been quite shoddy over the past few years, the foremost example being our failure to make sure Laraque was healthy before signing him to a three-year deal. If they're amateur scouts (for junior players and such), I'm a bit puzzled, as our scouting in that area has been fairly good over the past few years (it's prospect development that seems to give us a hard time).

The result remains the same but technically, they were not fired, their contract was not renewed.

Naah... we all love that big evil fur ball. Firing is not necessary, just a dye job

Seems like a weird time to do this,, so close to the draft. Will the new people hired, have time to do proper evaluations on such a short time line?? Is our draft list completed,, and are we going to draft based on reports from the guys released??

This is extremely weird, what stands out to me is the majority of the amateur scouts covered the European side. Now I know the Draft is around the corner, but at this point usually area scouts have run their course. The Habs probably have had their final Draft meeting to prepare their rankings and their head crosscheckers and director of scouting probably have the information to take it from here.

What it could mean is I doubt we'll see many Europeans drafted this year, as the Habs fired their head of Russia and Swedish scouting, while they could still use their information, either it was a performance issue (Gauthier/Timmins dissatisfied with the reports assembled over the year), a direction change in philosophy that the current regime doesn't fit under, or a frictional issue personally.

I also could smell a budget cut as one of the Quebec scouts were fired also.

Nevertheless the reasoning is just speculation, and without knowing where exactly the Habs are in their Draft process/ranking I can't really estimate the results. The headline reads, "Gauthier" fired the scouts, which I find weird, seeing as that;s Timmins jurisdiction and he handles these people in the day to day operations. Maybe just a bureaucratic thing?

If I were to make a shot in the dark here, there will be a change in the Euro drafting philosophy this year, you will either see a lack or a surplus, probably the former but can't really make a guess.

To add to the point that you bolded, this is also the first off season under new ownership.

I know that everyone loves the Molsons (and I'm not saying that I don't), but seeing as how ticket prices have gone up yet again it's not as though they're just in this for the love of the team. They want to make money, as they should, and cuts to what I would assume would be one of the larger scouting staffs in the league might not be a bad way to go.

Let's hope the Molson's are taking a feather from the Sabres Cap and using Video as well, It seems to have worked well for Buffalo. Go Habs Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, and my totally blind guess is a lack. I would be surprised if we drafted many Europeans this year. My feeling (or maybe just optimism) is that Gauthier is not happy with how so many of our European prospects have gone sour (Grabovski, SK), stalled (AK), or flown the coop (Yemelin, Valentenko). This might be a draft where we stay on the continent for the most part and give the replacement scouts a year before dipping heavily into the European prospect pool.

Same conclusion here. In Gainey & PG's eyes, I dont think there's any coincidence that we just had our deepest run since the early 90s with a team that is more north american than we have seen since that time.

Rightly or wrongly this team appears headed towards less europeans (Halak and maybe Plekanec excepted) and more north americans. We'll see how that works out.

The points argued regarding the direction change are all quite fair. However, I would like to think it's strictly performance based.

Let's be blunt, would anyone have even guessed we had a bleedin' Swedish scout?!?! When was the last Swede on the team, Naslund? As far as european scouting as a whole goes, the same holds true we always get hoodwinked by small quick forwards who make their living on the large ice. We clearly needed some fresh eyes over there. That being said, the removal of a Quebec scout may be a little concerning, however, hopefully this is another firing based on lack of production.
