Coyotes Re-Sign Lee Stempniak To Two-Yr Contract.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes have re-signed unrestricted free agent Lee Stempniak to a two-year contract, the Arizona Republic reported on its website late Sunday.

A league source told the newspaper the deal is expected to be officially announced Monday.

The 27-year-old Stempniak joined the Coyotes at the trade deadline last season in a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 18 regular-season games with Phoenix, the right-winger had 14 goals and four assists. He added two assists in seven playoff games.

Before getting dealt to the Coyotes, Stempniak had 14 goals and 16 assists in 62 games with the Maple Leafs.

A fifth-round draft pick of St. Louis in 2003, Stempniak has recorded 96 goals and 113 assists in 374 career games with the Blues, Maple Leafs and Coyotes.

And I wondered why he sucked in the playoffs. He was dreaming of Winnipeg!:lol:

If the Phoenix Coyotes end up moving to Winnipeg, at least one member of the club has no interest in heading north.

Free agent to be, Ilya Bryzgalov, who has spent the better part of four seasons with the Coyotes, doesn't seem keen on the potential move.

"You don't want to go to Winnipeg, right?" Bryzgalov told Sun Media on Wednesday. "Not many people live there, not many Russian people there. Plus it's cold. There's no excitement except the hockey.

No park, no entertaining for the families, for the kids. It's going to be tough life for your family."

Bryzgalov, who says he's only been to Winnipeg once or twice during his minor hockey days, figures that if he's going to play in a cold climate it might as well be closer to home, and he likely won't entertain a new contract offer from the club if it moves.

"Probably not," the 30-year-old Russian said. "I better go to somewhere in Russia, KHL, to be honest, because KHL is Russian people, its family, friends."

Bryzgalov, who wasn't on his game during the Coyotes' sweep at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings, wants the team to find a way to stay in Glendale.

"I hope team's going to stay," Bryzgalov told the Sun. "It's such a nice area and such nice place to play hockey."

COYOTES CLEAN OUT LOCKERS UNSURE IF THEY'LL RETURN TO DESERT

COYOTES SIGN SON OF FORMER NHLER HEXTALL TO CONTRACT

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes signed North Dakota junior forward Brett Hextall to an entry-level contract Friday.

Hextall, the 23-year-old son of former NHL goalie Ron Hextall, had 13 goals, 16 assists and 63 penalty minutes in 39 games this past season for the Fighting Sioux. In 115 games in three seasons at North Dakota, he had 39 goals, 42 assists and 242 penalty minutes.

Phoenix drafted the five-foot-11, 195-pound Hextall, from Manhattan Beach, Calif., in the sixth round in 2008.

Hextall's grandfather, Bryan Hextall Jr.; great grandfather, Bryan Hextall Sr.; and great uncle, Dennis Hextall, also played in the NHL.

Phoenix was swept by Detroit in the first round of the playoffs.

Well written IMO. Makes note that only 200 fans showed up for a save the coyotes community event, while 35000 showed up for winnipeg. thats 0.1% of Phoenix/0.88% of Glendale, while its 5% of winnipeg. So im sure in 15 years Bettman figured hockey in the south growing to 200 die hard fans is a success?

NHL, GLENDALE MAKING INTERIM DEAL TO KEEP COYOTES IN DESERT

The National Hockey League and the city of Glendale, Ariz., are expected to enter into another one-year interim agreement to work together on securing ownership for the Phoenix Coyotes to keep the team in Glendale. The Glendale City Council will vote on the action at its next meeting on Tuesday that will keep the team playing at Jobing.com Arena for the 2011-12 season. Both the NHL and city of Glendale intend to continue working on a sale to the potential ownership group led by Chicago businessman Matt Hulsizer.

"As we have for the past two-plus years, we have been working very closely with the City of Glendale to do everything possible to ensure the Coyotes' future in Glendale," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told NHL.com. "At the City's request, we have agreed to pursue another one-year interim arrangement while we jointly pursue a long-term ownership solution. We remain confident that one exists, and we intend to continue to pursue it."

You have got to be kidding me...

Correct me if I;m wrong...Pheonix is the 12th largest tv market and Atlanta the 8th?

Should that be true, WHY is Bettman doing EVERYTHING in his power to keep Phoenix in Phoenix and not Atlanta in Atlanta. Is it a pride thing? or is bettman just a jerk?

Phoenix is a huge mess. Atlanta is only a mess.

Phoenix is league-owned, tied to the arena in a massive way, and older. The NHL is in bed with the City of Glendale, in a big way. Why do you think Glendale built a $180 Million arena, and then built a mini-city around it? There's some talk the NHL is afraid of potential lawsuits from Glendale should the team move.

As well, Atlanta has not yet run out of chances. Phoenix has been a constant embarrassment for years, Atlanta is yet to get that noticed.
