Larry-Launstein-Jr
I know it's way early yet, but the 2009-2010 season is over, and we had our 100th Anniversary and a run into the Eastern Conference Finals. I know there are still some folks looking back on what took place, which is fine by me. However, there are people now talking about what the team needs for the upcoming season already. With that in mind, I decided to post this early so people can post their thoughts on what the Habs need, and what is taking place for and during the upcoming season. I would appreciate it if everyone now brings their thoughts on what the Habs need in free agency, the draft, and the overall state of the Habs for the upcoming season and during the season here, so we can close the books on a nice playoff run and wonderful 100th Anniversary, and start anew - with hopes the next century can be as great as the past 100 years. Agreed. Lets take what we accomplished this year and try and improve upon it. Lets not slide backwards as we have in the past after having some success. Note I did not say 'after having a good year', because I think our regualr season was average at best, and then we completely excelled in the play-offs. Two different seasons, two different teams almost. Here's my wish list: -add another Travis Moen type player. Just so he doesn't feel so alone out there most nights. Most good teams have two or three Moen type players in thier line-up (look at Philly) and I can't see anyone else on our present roster who brings his type of presence. Size and grit is our number one priority, because we already have tons of skill -make a goaltending decision and choose to keep one of our starting goalies. Use one of the goalies in the minors as a back-up to either one of Halak or Price. Trade one of the two starters for a first round pick in the upcoming draft, preferably a top 10 selection. There are some quality players being drafted this year and it would be nice to see us get one of the top four rated D prospects that will likely go in the first 8 -10 picks. Our 27th selection is weak compared to what is available in the top 10-15 spots. -get rid of the underachievers. AK, SK, Pouliott come to mind, and bring in one really good strong power forward via free agency. Bring up two minor league players who are deserving of the bump to the big team to fill the void left by the three departures I have named. At some point you have to rate your players, and be completely honest in doing that. If the managers are doing their jobs properly the normal conclusion is keep the good parts and get rid of the parts that aren't working out. That is what good managers do. In the case of AK, SK, and Pouliott we can't continue to play the waiting game with these three, and management needs to acknowledge this and move the team forward. I think those are the three things we need to address this off season.

Mathradio
I'm not even sure that we can even have Playoff Hockey with the players we got for Halak! Price seems to be a decent goalie but at least these cheesepuffs wouldn't get any of our goalies.
seankemp
my only guess is that Halak was traded because his agent wants to much money to be resigned, but even then for two draft prospects? "Yes, that's the trade. My apologies, Habs fans. That might be the worst deal I've seen in a long, long time." -Richard Cloutier

fourtrax
State of the Habs: pretty good if we re-sign Plekanec. Even better if we find a taker for Hamrlik and get Carey squared away to a multi-year deal at a reasonable cap hit.
habby-_mtlc
This thread is turning into the Halak trade thread 2.0. The trade is finished, we can't go back. Let's move on. I'd like to see Price signed to an affordable, short term deal. I'm thinking two years. I have no idea what price, but less than the 2.2 million his cap hit was this past season. Plekanec would be good to sign. And I guess have some defensemen ready to play because Markov's going to be out for some time.
Mathradio
I understand that the Kostitsyns may not be welcome in many NHL teams because Sergei is more or less a "crybaby" of a right winger. Once we get rid of Sergei (maybe to the hands of the HC Dynamo Minsk) we can concentrate on what really matters: on-ice play. But why some people would have to capitalize on the bad behavior of players to promote the NHL? The NHL is what it is only because most hockey players are and the ones doing the bad stuff are usually fringe players/plumbers.

This is still the same team that squeaked into the Po's in 8 th place - healthy or not they continually spend most evening int their own end getting outshot by ridiculous margins only to have their behinds saved by Halak, who is no longer with the Team Team doesn't appear any stronger than last year. Some guys are getting older ( Spacek, Gill, Hammer ... ) Best D man is out until 2011 ....or somewhere close to that Sure PK will get a legitimate shot but he's a raw rookie Annointed # 1 goalie has lots to prove now Some young guys aren't getting any better ( AK, SK ..... ) The big 3 ( SG, BG, MC ) aren't very big - we can discuss the merits of size elsewhere They can't spend 82 game a year blocking shots all game . They have to generate offense somewhere and 5 on 5 they were horrible last year

They have to generate offense somewhere and 5 on 5 they were horrible last year Despite my misgivings about the team, I don't think they're as bad as last year's regular season indicated. Spacek should continue to be a serviceable top-four d-man; I thought he had a quietly solid season once he adjusted to playing on the right side. I'm banking on at least one of Pouliot and AK breaking out and giving us a solid 25-goal season. If injuries don't pile up again, I don't see why we couldn't compete for 5th or 6th place in the ultra-weak east. And this is assuming that PG doesn't have any July 1 tricks up his sleeve. habby-_mtlc
I don't think we'll see any big signings this summer because we have too little to work with and too many people that need to be signed. I really doubt that Cullen will hit free agency, he put up decent numbers in Ottawa. But, the sooner Plekanec is signed (touch wood) the better. Hopefully AK decides he can actually play hockey and that Laps is resigned and plays like he did in the Washington and Pittsburgh series'.
362186_1475251427
I would love to see a guy like Kurtis Foster come to town. He would be a much better version of MAB as he could play at both ends of the rink and shouldn't cost too much. The Habs may need to shed some salary though to make any moves outside of Pleks happen, although I have a bad feeling about Tomas signing a big deal... Still too early to be mad at the Halak deal, yeah they could've gotten more but how long do you wait for the big deal to come, we've played that game before and lost. maddienmike
I just want to make sure we sign Pleks but I am worried it should be a done deal by now,and i hope we can keep Laps because he can play and Moore because he has so much guts,he has been around the league and I think he will be even better if he feels secure, I am not sure we would get anything for Benny too inconsistant, although I like the K brothers and they are very talented I don't think they are happy here, will they want to stay together I don't know,I agree with what a previous poster said about Moen another like him wouldn't be bad and I do like Metro another hard worker but getting past his prime, but who is out there to be had at a salary we can afford not much so I don't think we will see much else happening there can't be many teams who will want our castoffs they all are in the same position as us or most of them, I think more and more teams will be going the young route now look what it did for the Hawks, but I just want Pleks signed first of all GO HABS GO :D

J-R-BobDobbs
State of the habs: Excellent. What the habs need to do: - I think it's very important, in this age with the salary cap, to have on a winning team players who exceed from their pay grade. Some people want to use AK, SK, or Pouliot in a trade to help get a certified top-six forward, but I don't see the advantage to this because then we are too squeezed to the salary cap. The fact is that we do have lots of young players who could have break-out seasons: Eller, AK, SK, Pouliot, Latendresse, O'Byrne, and maybe Darche or Pyatt. Plus we will have PK and Georges who'll definitely be economically advantageous. In the past we haven't had much success in this department, but that doesn't mean it will be the same thing next season. - It's also important for the habs to just have time. After a coaching change and GM change and half of the players were new, plus there were lots of injuries, team chemistry last year was very low, and this is something only time can solve. - Get a good start, a better regular season. Maybe last year we could have gone further into the playoffs, but we just didn't have the energy for it. This year if we play better from the start of the regular season (more chemistry, less injuries) then we can have easier opponents in the first rounds of the playoffs and we could also have some breaks in between playoff rounds which would be obviously a great improvement from two consecutive game 7s. Also let's recognize that a winning spirit can take an adjustment to getting used to, so by winning more in the regular season the players can learn to play better with the lead, and also learn to compete at the highest levels having on you high expectations rather than underdog status. - Minor roster adjustments will obviously be needed, but this is so tough to predict (considering who is available and how talks with them go) that I think it's best I don't waste my time predicting and just leave it to the habs management. Obviously though it would be great if we could trade Hamrlik, and if we could sign Pleks at a logical salary (especially remembering he had that hip injury all through the playoffs). Wild cards: - Well, hoping youths will have break-out seasons is always a bit unpredictable. Sometimes there are variables which cannot be foreseen. Otherwise it's up to management to be top-notch and determine where there is still hope and where there isn't, that's all I can say! And we know Martin is good with youths, so personally I'm willing to give things a chance. - Carey Price is another wildcard, although even if he's not 'great' in the worst case scenario I think he will still be at least 'good' (I don't see any indications to suggest otherwise). avsgirl621
Feeling we are in for a downer next season. Price in net, ,no markov until Santa comes, pleks likely gone and hammer Gill and spacek another year older and slower. Ak and pouliot careers in the crapper it seems. I need some happy pills. Hoping gauthier makes some magic happen the next two weeks.
habby-_mtlc
According to a source on this site, PG's shopping Markov and Plekanec. He's seeking younger players in return. Perhaps getting young, cheap talent will allow us to sign someone big?
