Habs Sign Free Agent Alex Auld To A One Year Contract

Well the habs now have two goalies that are similar in stature/size at least (Auld 6'4" 216LBS./Price 6'3" 219LBS.)... so perhaps that will help the "D" be more consistent in knowing what each goalie looks like in the net. ;) Wonder if they have similar styles too (could be good for Carey having another goalie with size to work with). Clearly Auld will be the back-up now... so Carey has definitely got to elevate his game to show he is a legit No.1.

The Price was right

Amazing that Biron went for $875,000 to the Rangers.

Well, Ellis just signed with TB for $1.5 mil a year for 2 years. It probably came down to Ellis just wanting more playing time or something, I guess. Oh well, Auld is a decent goalie. It'll be interesting to see how he does.

Or maybe Gauthier didn't want to give Ellis a two-year contract. ;) And if that's the case, I agree with Gauthier. Keep starter and backup on a short leash, wait until the end of 10-11 when our cap situation will start to get straightened out (Hamrlik, Gill, and Markov all come off the books at the same time), and reassess.

We are tight on cap space this year and even a $500k difference in salary means a lot.

Agreed. That 500K might be needed as wiggle room for AHL injury callups this year.

You know, I never asked for this guy to sign and I didn't want him at all knowing how poor he has been throughout his whole career. <_< What about Biron? How could Gauthier miss out on the guy who's also a tall guy (6'3") and who's fit/good enough to endure 30 games (a backup goalie should play around 30 games nowadays)?

Would have preferred Biron or even Turco (would have been a good mentor). At least Auld will not have delusions of number 1 status but if Carey doesn't work out...oh ohhh. Not good for us.

here are 2 upsides to that

1. its only a year and if we tank this season we will have a good prospect

2. we unload a large amount of cap next year

i see a lot of "would have rather had biron" talk here...we dont know that pg didnt make a pitch for biron...he might not want to play here anyways...we treat him like crap whenever he comes to play against us...he doesnt owe us anything lol

Acording to Arpon Basu Biron inquired with the Canadiens whether or not they would be interested in his services and PG said no.

ok so if biron wanted to play here...we dont know that he would have taken the term that pg wanted...a 1 year deal, he signed in ny for 3 years and more total dollars than we got auld for...there are many factors that go into making a choice im not upset at a backup goalie being signed to 1 year...i would have been upset if he wasnt able to get boyd signed to a contract...lol

edit: it also speculates that biron inquired...it might have been like...hey want biron hell sign for this many dollars...to which pg said no

Seeing as how Biron signed a 2 year deal I imagine term was an issue . I'm very happy we signed Boyd also :D

i don't get this signing at all. i personally don't think auld is the goalie to go with. he's not exactly reliable or great and i don't see him being able to work with carey the way other goalies could have. there's a bunch of goalies they could have signed other than alex.

maybe i don't know what i'm talking about and he's actually good but from what i've heard, he's not that great. prove me wrong alex!

anyways, welcome to MTL alex. good luck :)

I see no issue with Auld, he's a serviceable backup! And I think that's what Carey needs - no more stressing about who's #1. Hopefully with that question settled, he'll be able to get back to his rookie form. :)

Re Biron: he was a Nords fan, and one thing I remember vividly from him is when he was with Philly, and they asked him what it feels like to be Quebecois and to eliminate the Habs, and he said "I was a Nordiques fan, so it's a dream come true". I think he'd have gone elsewhere besides the Habs, if the contracts were equal, even.

Sergei Kostitsyn for Alex Auld and Dustin Boyd is IMO a solid deal from a hockey and locker room standpoint. You bring in 2 role players that know their role and have accepted it and for brief flashes thrived in those roles. For 1.65M you just added a solid 9-12 forward and a content backup goalie. That's not flashy but effective money management.

In essence, we took the money for Ellis and got both Boyd/Auld. Not a bad move.
