js2
Wont dispute that he's better. My point was,,, if your a team shopping for a Dman,,, do you still give up that top 3 forward and or a #1 pick for Kabs when you could have picked up Souray for nothing but a cap hit? But $5.4M is a pretty big cap hit for a guy that's missed 102 games during his three seasons in Edmonton.
NorthShore
Bad memory...what comments? Here's the article from Sportsnet when it was announced he wanted a trade. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/04/12/souray_request/ Some quotes: "I feel now that, when I signed here, I probably was as blinded by their great past as (the Oilers) are," Souray said. "People will question me, that they overpaid me … that it was a bad decision to sign me. But I can tell you this: I turned down more money in other places." "I’ve had the experience of playing in great organizations (in New Jersey and Montreal), and experienced a vastly different approach to things like that. I was a captain in Montreal. I never had my character questioned there, or in New Jersey. I feel that’s all I’ve had since I’ve been here.’" "The Oilers always prided themselves in being a family. Whatever happened to that? I haven’t talked to (Tambellini) since mid-January." I love how he follows it up with, "But it’s not about me" What? That's all it's ever been about. (and this is coming from someone who's been a big fan of Souray up until 2010, even with his injury problems) Kiss my little white butt, Souray. Guest
But $5.4M is a pretty big cap hit for a guy that's missed 102 games during his three seasons in Edmonton. It certainly is however,, the situation needs to be considered by any team in the market for a top 4 D man that has the Cap room. Its about a mill more then Kaberle but you dont give up any futures. If i'm a GM desperate for that type of player i might be tempted to lean towards somebody who doesnt cost me my 1st rounder or a top line roster player. If he doesnt work out,,,,cut my losses and waive him again ( pretty sure you cant trade a guy you picked up off waivers ). Kaberle will be a UFA in another year,, so hes just a short term fix himself whom BB doesnt seem to want to part with unless the return is huge. Its obvious that no team is desperate enough,, as Souray was waived through. Thats why it makes me wonder if Kaberle will go for that big payoff that BB wants. Is there really that much demand out there??

CanadianMike
I think they should put him on re entry waivers though...paying half his salary is better than full salary (and it is obvious they don't want him-he doesn't want to be there). At half his salary I think a couple GMs would bite (and pray that he stays healthy)

He's a pretty big asset at that price and it's only for 2 years which is nice.

At half his salary I think a couple GMs would bite (and pray that he stays healthy) I agree. I think you will see a team take a chance on him if he goes on reentry waivers. Edmonton is not going to make the post-season this year, I assume, so what's the harm in getting rid of the guy and having to pay half his salary for two more years. I mean, what else are they going to do? The bridge has already been burned so they might as well get half of the cash off the books now and start looking forward to the end of 2011-2012. FlHabsFan
Yep. Either release him and be stuck with his cap hit for however many years, or pay him 5.4 to play in the AHL, or pay 2.7m and let another team pick up the other half. Thats the best case scenario. Guest
Theres still the posibility they can move that whole salary to a team needing to reach the Cap floor by adding a little incentive such as a late pick. I'm sure they'll explore this avenue before considering the re=entry strategy.

honuhab
Great shot but what a pylon in the defensive zone. No kidding. We just unloaded another sucky D man with a big shot in MAB. Why would we want another one that is more expensive and almost certainly going to get hurt? With PK certain to be on the team next year and Weber developing we don't need Souray anymore.
