fourtrax
I agree that Gio! wasn't bad. However, more is expected than 'not bad' from him. I'm not worried though. He knows what he has to do and will do it I don't know, I think Gionta tends to get a free pass from people because he's a little guy who plays with energy. I thought he was bad last night. Pretty much invisible until late in the third period. IMO forwards who had stronger games than Brian include AK, Plekanec, Eller, Boyd, Halpern, Lapierre, and even Gomez. It's not a big deal, because I'm pretty confident that Gionta will rebound, but it was definitely not the kind of performance you want from your newly minted captain in the first meaningful game of the new season. S-Bah
I think the Tampa Bay game at the Bell Centre should be Gionta's time to put on a show,I can't wait for that game to start. With Boucher coaching Tampa Bay the Habs are going to find out what it's like to play against him. I think Jacques Martin's competitiveness and experience will nullify any effect he will bring with him.
ColRouleBleu
I watched the Vancouver game last night and seeing an old Canuck captain hand Henrik Sedin his new jersey with the C is something I would have liked to see for the announcement of Brian's captaincy at the Bell Centre. I dont know if the Habs have something like this planned but whether they do or not, the effect will be quite diluted. Oh well... Hopefully, Gio! is considering the home opener as the real first game of the season and will start to play the way we're used to see him play. I dont mind if Pleki's line is outplaying Gomez's line or has more points and vice versa. I just want the players of both lines to be dominant on the ice and outplay the opponent. So far Pleki and now Cammi are delivering, Gomez and Gio! have to board the ship too starting no later than Wednesday.
S-Bah
Yes the oceanliner is coming up the St. Lawrence as we speak those horns you hear are for the Habs to know and get on board before it's too late. Nobody misses the boat this time around you only get so many kicks at the can. Go habs Go!

js713
yes! this. also why is the gomez line considered our first line ? the pleks line has been better consistently better, no? I don't think either line is really considered a "top" line, they're pretty much inter-changeable. One line gets more minutes one night, and the other might get more the next. S-Bah
I hope the Habs have some kind of ceremony (Jean Beliveau handing Gionta his Captain jersey) before the home opener. That would be a great starting point for the new Captain.
leafs_rock_go_mccabe
Better than a ceremony would be Gionta scoring his first of the season and setting up another!
franck5890
Meh. I don't think you want to overblow/glorify the situation too much. Just let him quietly do his job rather than putting him on a pedestal.
S-Bah
Gionta's line will be lighting it up against Tampa this week should show the strength of our team. Markov back in the lineup Saturday, that will mark the start for the whole team. I hope Carey is in nets for the Ottawa game and shuts them out. Bean-Counting-Hab
I'm sure they'll have something, but hopefully it's just Beliveau presenting him the jersey or something like that, and it takes 5 min. The worst quality of hockey seems to be in games that have long, drawn out, pregame ceremonies.

Only problem is, we usually don't do well when we have pre-game ceremonies. Hope we can break that trend Wednesday.

Oh well, I guess I don't care what happens, I just hope the start of the game isn't delayed by 30 minutes. I would be perfectly happy avoiding the embarrassment that was Toronto's home opening ceremoney and just going for the roster roll-call and starting the game. Gionta can come out last and get huge applause when he's named the captain by the Bell Centre announcer. That would be good enough for me. All these ceremonies over the past few years have gotten tiresome.
Win-the-cup
In years gone by.....being captain of this team.....was a hollowed honor.....it meant that you accepted the responsibility to LEAD this team to do wonderful things for its fans. To uphold a great tradition of winning, not only the regular season games, but the real important games every Spring in the charge to claim the Stanley Cup. Back then.......the guy who wore the "C" on the sweater........showed the sportsworld what a captain of the team really meant. Over time that whole mistique has fallen by the wayside. Now a "C" sewn onto a players jersy seems nothing more than a "merit badge" a kid gets from scouts. The fans have grown to expect very little from it's captains to lead this team to greatness. There are no more huddles on the ice called by the captain in the last minute of a close game to lay strategy from a players perspective. It's just a job.....now I don't want another meanless ceremony at the start of this game It only reminds me of what we lost when the guys who wore the "c" with great pride mattered

RSD
I don't see a point in a presentation ceremony for Gionta, we already know he got the "C". He played pre-season home games with the "C", it's not the first time the home crowd is going to see him wearing it lol. Just introduce the players and get it over with, no need for some special event with this one. Any excitement/anticipation was gone when La Presse reported Gionta as the captain before the team could.
