fourtrax
#20 Ryan O'Byrne BioStatsVideoDraft ClassQUOTE LIBRARY“There’s a big difference between playing 14 and 22,” said O’Byrne, who played a season-high 21:48 in Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Vancouver. “You just go out and play the game; you don’t have time to think about a mistake or a certain play that might be bothering you. You just go out there the next shift. When you’re playing 22 minutes, you don’t have time to pout, especially when you’re playing against the other team’s top lines.” Montreal Gazette, February 4 2010
theRazor67
O'Byrne did a great job last season with Markov out of the line-up and the extra minutes gave him a chance to play against the top lines. This will spill over into the 2011 season and at this time next year I suspect that his nay-sayers will all come running to jump on the big Dman's bandwagon. Hal Gill proved to all what he could do to shut down the superstars of the NHL play-offs last year. In O'byrne I see the Gill of the next generation. All those who post your negitive remarks about his mistakes remember this, It is our mistakes that produces the drive to excel, to be better, not our victories. Ask any POKER PLAYER! O'Byrne is a diamond in the rough still, but a diamond none the less. Best wishes in the coming years Ryan!!

Walrus26
Dreamy Look at the bio quote. The poor guy won't have time to pout, let alone anything else Mind you, if his exile to the press box in the playoffs is anything to by, you might be in luck
dfrancis
I really hope he is given ice time this year. He's really quite a solid D-man, and is very punishing. I can not fathom why JM elected to sit O'Byrne and play Bergeron against Philly. Just blows my mind. We're playing a big, physical team, and you have a choice between a tiny offensive D man who is an incredibly bad liability in his own zone, or a huge 6-5 240lb punishing physical D-man. Just blows my mind that OB had to sit. Not that I think he'd have been enough to change the outcome, but MAB was painful to watch. This year, I hope he continues to play with Markov on the #1 PK and on the #1 pairing. I think he plays a very similar game to Douche$arek, and we all remember how good the Markov-Douche$arek pairing was (you know, before he bolted to the leafs). bailey1
Markov - Subban Hamrlik - Spacek Gill - Gorges O'Byrne I think is still gonna have to fight for a roster spot. Or at least try to hold it, if Markov can't return the first month into the season.
swimmerpuck
My favorite play/move by Ryan O'Byrne............. When he simply lays a solid check against the opponent without taking himself out of the play. Keep working, Ryan!

When he simply lays a solid check against the opponent without taking himself out of the play. Keep working, Ryan! Where he appears to have his weight/balance set for back skating, keeps his eyes front and just extends forwards into the player with enough power to take him down cleanly whilst staying fully in the play himself? Yep, like that a lot!
dfrancis
Uggh. I would rather see him on the team than Gill or Gorges, but both are likely unmoveable. It's really unfortunate, because I think he's a natural fit to play with Markov, but Subban will likely be there. Maybe we could get rid of Gorges or Gill and run with this? Markov-O'Byrne Hammer- Spacek Gill- Subban I would really love to see him with Markov, but it's not gonna happen. It's likely going to be this: Markov- Subban Hammer- Spacek Gill-Gorges Frustrating when O'Byrne is better than Gill, Gorges, and arguably better than Subban (at the moment), but he won't get any ice time. swimmerpuck
It will be interesting to see the relationship between O'Byrne and Martin. Hopefully OB can stay out of the doghouse and progress with his development. (In an effort to talk about other players on the Habs roster besides the one not yet signed who shared a position with Halak last year.)
DA_Champion
If Markov misses the first few months of the season due to injury, O'Byrne will have a roster spot as the 6th defenseman on the team. It is interesting that Gauthier did not go out to sign mediocre veterans (Mike van Ryn? Garnet Exelby?) to fill out the spot. He's going to take a risk and let O'Byrne sink or swim. If O'Byrne sinks, little harm done. Those guys will still be available as MAB was last year. If he succeeds, we end up with a good dman playing for $742,000/year who is most likely not in line for a raise.

I can actually see Obryne packaged with a player or two during the season to fill a position we appear weak in.

O'Byrne has started to fulfill expectations and is rounding out to be a capable defenceman. I don't see a trade in the works for him unless someone really surprises during the pre-season. I don't see a trade in the works for him unless someone really surprises during the pre-season. Agreed with your assessment of OB. Some fans still don't think much of him, but if you compare his play two years ago to his play last year, he has vastly improved. He was much more physical and better positionally, and his confidence was better throughout most of the year until JM started playing games with his ice time. The biggest problem for OB is going to be how JM uses him. If he gets benched for every mistake he makes again, his development will suffer. If he gets the chance to play with someone like Hamrlik or Spacek and get regular minutes he'll be okay.

I really hope he continues to improve and takes on a steady 5-6 spot this season with minimal time in the press-box. As far as I can tell O'B and Subban will be our only two right-handed point men, making them valueable to the team if they can perform reasonably well. Even last season I was fairly confused as to why it seemed as if he was getting the martin shaft...He looked to be playing pretty well for us and then one mistake would cost him weeks in the pressbox, while others could commit the same crimes and go unpunished. fourtrax
Pivotal year for Ryan. If he can't earn a permanent spot in our starting six, he has no future in Montreal. He plays a physical game and skates better than you'd expect for a man his size, but his decision-making is sometimes questionable. This season, he really needs to demonstrate that he's ready to be an every-game d-man whom you can play in pressure situations.
Habs-101
I honestly think he is going to be wasted. I think JM has little patience for him for whatever reason compared to some of the other guys... but I think he has the potential to be better then Komisarek, he blocks shots almost as well, already with less icetime, offensively is the same, just needs to keep improving his positioning, but honestly I think playing with Markov would give him confidence and make him a better player, Markov elevates his partners game... I would love to see this, Markov - O'byrne Hamrlik - Subban Picard/Gill - Gorges Picard/Gill I really think Spacek is still tradeable to a team like the NYI or Thrashers or those teams trying to reach the floor, I would trade him for a draft pick, it leaves the team in a much more flexible position next offseason, and I really dont see the lineup being any better with spacek in it anyways. dfrancis
It's tough. Ideally, I'd like this for our D. Markov - O'Byrne, this pair is like Markov - Douche$arek from a few years ago, it would be great. Spacek - Subban, Two offensively minded D-men, but Spacek is responsible in his own zone, and should be able to compliment Subban. Hammer/Gill - Gorges, Hammer is still a top 4 D-man, but the other 4 we have are better. Plus, Hammer + top 4 minutes + 82 game season = uh oh. Gill is painful in the regular season, but we'll see. Of course it won't happen. Subban will be on the top pairing with Markov, Hammer - Spacek, then Gill - Gorges, with O'Byrne in the doghouse. Side note: Why are people talking about trading Spacek? Spacek vs. Hammer, Spacek is the better player. Spacek at 3.8 and Hammer at 5.5, it's no question.

I would love to see it happen, I think he's gotten a raw deal in Montreal. He got killed for the own goal and some fans still haven't let it go. And it was obvious during the Philly series that Martin has little to no faith in him. I was hoping to see him get a better shot early next year with Markov out, but I just don't see that happening. I think either the newly signed Picard or the oft-injured Carle will be given first cracks in Markov's absence.

Well if he's given some more ice to better develop, I don't see anything wrong with O'Byrne. I just hope they won't trade him, it's great to see homegrown talent on the ice rather than UFA signings. We are indeed in the middle of re-building and contending at the same time. I especially loved the line with Markov - O'Byrne Only off season workout he needs is to improved his shooting from the point. If he can improve on that, that'll be ++ in my book.
