Ryan O'byrne

Recommended Posts

Does anybody else feel EXTREMELY nervous when ever he is on the ice? I think he is the most unreliable defenseman that we have.

Tossup between O'Byrne and Gill as to who makes me more nervous. It's really too bad we don't see playoff Gill outside of, well, the playoffs. Regular-season Gill is an accident waiting to happen.

Can anyone explain to me why he is still on our roster. There are plenty of guys in the NHL with his size that have more skill. How hard is it to replace someone like O'Byrne. He had his chances over and over and hasn't shown a hint of improvement.

I know people in real life that are better than this guy. Is the market for defensemen really that bad?

OB is still young, at 26 years old he still has room to improve. No one is expecting him to be a #1 or #2 d-man, he makes a decent 5-6 guy. I didn't really notice him vs the Leafs which is a good thing because that means he wasn't making mistakes.

Yeah but my point is that this is the NHL. How bad is the market that we have to have a guy like this on our team even as a 5-6 guy.

And for someone that isn't considered #1 or #2 he gets wayyyy too much ice time.

O'Byrne is not young by hockey standards. Age 26 is an age when good players can be expected to play consistently from night to night. No one is asking Ryan to be Doug Harvey reborn or to suddenly become a topnotch shutdown guy. What we're asking is that he demonstrates himself capable of being a competent defensive defenseman, a 4th or 5th d-man who doesn't hurt the team with penalties and blown coverages. To this point, Ryan hasn't proven he can be that d-man.

This is a pivotal year for Ryan. If he can't cement his spot as a starter, he doesn't belong on this team.

Sounds like you're describing Josh Gorges

Seriously though, you're bang on. If OB were even close to Josh's level of play, I'd be more than happy with his development. Agree that his time is running out.

This situation frustrates me because O'byrne showed signs of being a good one a couple of years ago. Now he seemingly is playing for a coach who has no faith in him whatsoever which can't be good for the confidence level. I just don't see him being a Hab too much longer unless there is another string of injuries to overcome after Markov and Hamrlik are back.

He's still a betteer choice and player than Picard IMO. I thought he played well enou8gh again last night vs. the Penguins.

And please realize who he is playing with (Picard) at this point.

But how does this reflect well on Ryan? Yes, he's arguably a better choice than a bottom-tier depth d-man we picked up for nothing in the offseason. That still doesn't mean he's very good, or that he has a permanent spot on the team.

Except that one where we got scored on

Was it him or Spacek?

It was Spacek...

To refresh your memory, O'byrne lets in these kinds of goals:

and

Ps: This is the game where O'Byrne scored on his own net:

I feel so bad for him even 3 years later :(

Spacek and Picard are bigger problems than OB and Gill for now.

i will take with OB over Hammer, Gill and Spacek (salary included) Hammer and Gill are especially penalty prone at awful times

Scott Gomez $8,000,000 $7,357,000

Mike Cammalleri $5,000,000 $6,000,000

Andrei Markov $5,750,000 $5,750,000

Roman Hamrlik $5,500,000 $5,500,000

Brian Gionta $5,000,000 $5,000,000

Tomas Plekanec $5,000,000 $5,000,000

Jaroslav Spacek $3,833,000 $3,833,000

Andrei Kostitsyn $3,250,000 $3,250,000

Carey Price $2,500,000 $2,750,000

Hal Gill $2,250,000 $2,250,000

Travis Moen $1,500,000 $1,500,000

Benoit Pouliot $1,375,000 $1,375,000

Lars Eller $875,000 $1,271,000

Josh Gorges $1,300,000 $1,100,000

Alex Auld $1,000,000 $1,000,000

Ryan O'Byrne $1,400,000 $942,000

Maxim Lapierre $900,000 $900,000

Max Pacioretty $875,000 $875,000

P.K. Subban $875,000 $875,000

Ben Maxwell $735,000 $850,000

Dustin Boyd $650,000 $650,000

Jeff Halpern $600,000 $600,000

Alexandre Picard $600,000 $600,000

Mathieu Darche $500,000 $500,000

Tom Pyatt $500,000 $500,000

Georges Laraque (Buyout) $500,000 $500,000

A ton of money on D for less than stellar results I would keep OB and ship so $$$ to get some young fresh legs

The thing that ticks me off is that watching every pre-season game Henry was the much better d-man. Better than Gill, O'Byrne, Picard and Spacek. The guy hussles and plays a pretty solid D. His only downside was his offensive skills but he's a stay-at-home type d-man! When they waived him I was so shocked and disappointed. I really thought he had it made this year, at least while Marks and Hammer were injured.
