WinnipegJet
Losing to the Bruins (ie. the Stanley Cup Champions) in Game 7 overtime doesn't look so bad anymore, does it?
jennifer_rocket
Carey must be wondering what the defense in front of him will be like to start next season... I hope he gets what is needed. Probably not. I mean... What are we looking at so far. Jaroslav Spacek. Hal Gill. Alexei Yemelin. PK Subban. Nothing about those four stand out as stellar defensive players. Spacek is old, Gill is a specialist, Yemelin is unproven, and PK is still so, so young. I suppose we can factor in the additions of Markov and Gorges to the defensive core, as well, but do we really know what they will bring to the team after both having major surgeries. Gorges was never much more than a 5-6 pairing defender to start with. Sure he could play up in case of injury, but he's not a puck-mover, shooter, or hitter. fansince1975
I would hope that PG signs Price to a long term contract extension after July 1st. I believe that the contract can be extended any time after the final year of the contract begins. I would think that $55 million for 10 years would be fair to both sides. In general, 10 years is a hard pill to swallow for any club, no matter how good a goalie is at the time he signs the deal. Look at how badly Dipietro's contract has hurt the Isles and how awful the Luongo contract looks in Vancouver right now. I'd be more inclined to offer Price something like 6 years and pay him something between 5-6M a year, assuming he performs well again this year. The only question is whether its better to do a deal now (this summer) for $5m (risk because he's only had one elite season) or wait until next summer (assuming he has another) and have to pay him $6m plus because his risk factor went down after 2 great seasons. roy_133
I wouldn't rule out anything like a 10 year deal but it would have to be a very, very, very team friendly cap hit. Carey is still so young it actually is kind of weird when you think of it, if we signed him for 10 years, we'd still be able to extend him again without having to worry about the 35+ rule, lol. Really though, 5-7 years is probably my logical cap for any contract.
Forever_Habs10
Never did & still do not support those types of lengthly contracts....not in this day & age....its such a risk factor....IMO. Really though, 5-7 years is probably my logical cap for any contract. I can live with that...but when we get into the 8-10 yr conversation.....nope. fansince1975
I think a long term deal for players under 25 years old is a smart move for the player and team. There is some cap savings if the player develops as expected. There is also a cap savings as the percentage of the the total cap hit decreases as the cap appears to be going up every season in the NHL. The contracts that I think can really hurt a team are the 5+ year contracts for players 30+ years old. These type of long term deals are just to cave cap space as two or more seasons are past the retirement age for most NHL players. Luongo took his team to the 7th game. Sure the Canucks lost the series but I think it is funny how many people assume Luongo's contract is terrible. The key players for a team should be locked up long term IMHO. The Bruins, Flyers, Wings, Pens, and Hawks seem to follow this method. Several Cup finals have competed by these teams since the Canadiens last played in the Cup finals. What is the normal salary for an All Star goalie that plays 70+ games in a season? If seems to make sense to extend CP contract this summer rather then having his contract status hang over the team all season. I am a strong believer that Price is a better goalie then Tim Thomas who just won the Cup, MVP in the playoffs, and very likely his 2nd Veniza. Just imagine how good Price would be if he had a healthy Gorges and Markov in front of him.

habs-24
i dont think you would see Carey sign a long long term deal right now, im sure he wants to see what direction the defense and club overall will go in the next 3-4 years before committing to a long term here.
