#31 Carey Price 2010-11

It's funny:

When a forward prospect makes a quick jump to the NHL and puts up average top six numbers (50-60pts) in his first few seasons it's considerred a success.

When a goalie prospect makes a quick jump to the NHL and puts up average numbers in his first few seasons he's considerred a bust.

Not usually, just when fans have unrealistic expectations.

.920 to .912 thats regression, from a 2.56 to 2.77 goals against that regression,

from 7 th in the league to 21 st, from 19th in the league to 31.

Certainly signs of regression

His stats also mirror the team's success. He was playing on one heck of a team in that first season, then 2008-2009 was a disaster and then our season was just ok this time around. Now I'm not saying that his stats are a complete result of how the team plays in front of him, but I don't think we can simply look at the stats and say he regressed, especially when the team's success parellels Carey's play as his stats would indicate.

You act as if Price needs to better his rookie numbers to show improvement in your book. That's not going to happen. Guys don't put up a .920 SV% on a yearly basis, not even Brodeur. No, Price hasn't improved past his rookie season. He has, however, certainly improved from what he was in January and February of 2009. You have to work your way back from rock bottom and he is doing that. That being said, I'm not at all happy that he once again has been anointed the starter and future of the franchise without earning it.

+1

His negotitaions are going something like this I would guess.

GM: We have shown great confidence in your client and we want to lock him up for a 4 year deal.

Agent: Yes, we appreciate that.

GM: So we are prepared to offer you guys 4 years at 7.8 million

Agent: Is that per year? lol....

GM: Hahaha......actually the break down is 1.6, 1.8, 2.1 and 2.3 for a cap hit of 1.95 annually.

Agent: Well you got 1 number right, but we were looking at the 2.3 as a starting point.

GM: That would kinda put us against the cap right now and not allow us to build a better team infront of Carey.

Agent: Well your move was to acknowledge that my client has more potential upside and value than Jaroslav, and he just got 3.5 million a season.

GM: We do feel Carey has more upside, but he isn't there yet, and well, the Blues over paid for Jaro.

Agent: No, a number 1 goalie is worth 3 plus million a season, and My client is your number 1 goalie.

GM: He is, but we did so to be able to fit our team under the cap, not to over pay for him now.

Agent: So I guess we are talking about doing a 1 year deal then are we? We are confident in our value and where my clients future value will be, we are willing to do a 1 year deal and see what hapopens from there just like you did with Plekanec.

GM: Slow down, we want to get Carey in here for a longer term. We've made it clear to everyone that Carey is our man.

Agent: You made it clear to eveyone but myself and my client.

GM: How about this. 3 years at 2 million a season.

Agent: Pierre, did you not hear me earlier, 2.4 was a good start and for each year of the contract we want an increase of .8 mil

GM: That would put the contract at 4.8 million in 4th year and a cap hit 3.6 per season.

Agent: Yessum

GM: How can I justify not signing Jaro for 3.5, only to sign Carey at 3.6.

Agent: Becuase he's your man.....hahaha

Ooops, bubble just burst.....lol

seems very plausible, and Habs management would deserve the headache. You get him signed BEFORE trading Halak, not after. D'Oh!

For God's sake, people, Price doesn't even have arbitration rights this year. So if he tries to play hardball in contract negotiations, his only options are bolting to the KHL or sitting out the year. Why would he kill his NHL value by doing either of those things in a market choked with quality goalies? His agent would have to be moronic to push Carey down that route.

Is that a foolproof safety mechanism for the habs ?

No, definitely not. Touché. :)

For players with top-end potential, the best place to be is still the NHL in terms of salary. Carey doesn't have a lot of bargaining power this summer. I can't see him choosing to sit out the year or leave for the KHL now that he's in a position to take the starter's job in Montreal.

I for one hope that Price gets signed soon,I have just read every post on this thread and not one person thought of Carey as a kid just growing up,I know he is supposed to be a hockey player but what were you like at 20,did you have people taking pictures of your every move, did you go out to have some fun, and see every thing you did and didn't do in the press the next day, come on just because he plays for the HABS there are not many people who can come through all that without some problems look at all your pop stars they all end up in rehab. There was a football player from Ireland went to play for Man U his name was George Best had the potential to be the greatest player ever, only played for a few years because of drink and drugs and fans. Carey was first to congratulate Halak in every game he played backup, shows up for every skate,is first on and last off the ice even at optional practice spends extra time in the gym his stature has improved every season, you don't see him out partying anymore,he's grown up big time ,there are few people in this world with so much natural talent know how to handle it well, it's the people who have to work at it who usually do better, but I am not worried about our goalie he will be just fine he will not be another anybody he will be great in his own way and that's all anybody can ask.And if the fans that have been morons for one hundred years still want to be morons let them the rest of us will still be behind our team.

GO CAREY GO :D :D

GO HABS GO :D :D

I have no problem with trading Halak before Price was signed if the management had it in mind it would only show respect to Price, that they are willing to negotiate his contract without pretext. On the other hand if it was just an oversight on their part they failed to consider, then that would be pathetic. But I highly doubt it's the latter...
