A few years from now, if he can keep up a good level of play he'd be the D-man to which other Habs D-men are compared. And his cap hit will be around $6.75M or so by 2018 (or the year he becomes UFA)...

assuming cap limit doesn't skyrocket by then

Is he happy to play in Montreal?

If we assumed a 5% yearly cap raise, from now until 2018, a $6.75M cap hit in 2018 would be a $4.5M cap hit today. Would he be worth $4.5M/year if he was a pending UFA?

up to now i'd say hes glowing in tricolore

If we assumed that we'd have a lot of egg on our face in 2018.

The cap has jumped a lot in the few years it's been around. It's not that big of a stretch to think it'll hit 80 or 90 million in that time frame.

Well it's tied to revenue, yes at first it was jumping significantly but the 2 main factors were A. it was set low and B. the spike in the Canadian dollar and I'm pretty sure it only went up this past year because of a clause in the CBA that allowed the PA to bump it.

Really though, the cap has gone up around 5% over the last 3 years in total, why would we reasonably expect it to go up 5% a year for 7-8 years?

Sorry Roy, not sure what #'s you're looking at, but this is what I see;

(year-cap-% increase over previous year)

05/06 - 39.0 Million - 0%

06/07 - 44.0 Million - 12.8%

07/08 - 50.3 Million - 14.3%

08/09 - 56.7 Million - 12.7%

09/10 - 56.8 Million - 00.2%

10/11 - 59.4 Million - 04.6%

Even with that one year it barely increased, the cap has still gone up 18% from what it was 3 years ago. The increase has quite obviously lessened from what it was near the beginning of the current CBA, but it was close to 5% this offseason, and I don't think that we'll see many more bad years like we did in 09. (Hope not, anyways.) Ticket prices seem to be increasing at around that rate, so logic would dictate that the cap would as well. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see a 90 million dollar salary cap, but I don't think it's a huge stretch.

And I could easily see Subban getting close to seven million in his first UFA contract.

I'm attempting to Hijack this thread with CBA/Cap talk, so it may just catch up to Price after all.

I suppose I worded it poorly, I mean the last 3 seasons (including this up coming 1) where it's gone from 56.7 to 59.4 which is about a 5% raise.

Also, yes it's a stretch. The PA has been using the cap escalator yearly for a few years now but the problem is that I'm pretty sure that with the league revenues basically stagnating that will cause more escrow to be paid.

This is from the Globe and Mail,

One of the key issues facing the players in attendance Monday will be a vote on whether to approve the annual 5-per-cent growth factor in the NHL’s salary cap. A year ago, the vote was close, but players pushed the cap “inflator” through for the third consecutive year. After a season of players making 18-per-cent escrow payments, however, many believe this particular decision could be the most contentious one yet..."

"Due to the fact league revenues have not risen as quickly as the 5-per-cent growth factor and players receive a set percentage (roughly 57 per cent) of those revenues, the amount coming off their paycheques in escrow has at times been as high as 22.5 per cent in the last two seasons.

Some of that money is usually returned to players at the end of the year after revenues have been calculated, but this season the NHL will keep approximately 11 per cent of players’ salaries, almost $175-million (U.S.).

If players vote Monday for a cap increase of approximately $2-million, to $58.8-million, many teams will spend to that new limit and the league as a whole will likely again outspend revenues. If the growth factor is voted down, however, the cap will fall for the first time – likely to around $56.4-million.

Should that happen, several teams will be in even greater salary-cap difficulty, less will be spent overall and, to the delight of players, escrow will be lower.

It’s a system that pits players who are free agents and want more money, against those with long-term deals affected by escrow.

Finding a middle ground is likely to be difficult, although most agents contacted this week advocated for the cap going up.

They did vote it through but at some point it will catch up to them and I'm pretty sure it's the only thing that's kept the cap from falling recently.

Considering the NBA cap next year will be 58 million in a sport that pulled in a billion more dollars in revenue, that's 25% more than the NHL.

The NHL ever getting to the 70+ point is unlikely barring major economic changes. The only reason for the huge spikes in the first few years was due to a bar set so low and the NHL just getting back to respectability along with steady regaining of fans. The curve has become rather stagnant.

The cap in the NBA is a bit of a farce, what with all the franchise player exemptions and such.

That being said, you and Roy are probably right, and I was being a little optimistic in my calculations. We'll see what happens, but a cap in the 60's range is probably not a bad idea.

if you'd remove all the posts that talk about halak from the price thread, methinks PK would have a comfortable lead
