Bettman Makes Too Much Money

Recommended Posts

Ya the edit function on this site doesn't last long enough when I realised I had made the spelling error I couldn't fix it lol.

Fixed.

As for the pay...who doesnt make too much money in hockey? lol.

Regardless of his salary I think he is and has always been the wrong person for the job. If he were making 20,000,000 or 20,000 Id still want to see him replaced.

Moneypuck once said that he met few sports fans who were happy with league management in any sport. Even if Yzerman or Gretzky were placed as Commissionner instead, how many more fans would be happy with the NHL's front office?

Thanks Jedi and I agree he could make a dollar and it would be too much and I hope he fails miserably and very soon. I think if he saddles the other owners with the Yotes bills much longer he will see a quick end to his employment.

That's actually not that bad. Bud Selig turned a blind eye to steroids for 10 years and harmed an entire generation of baseball and he makes nearly 20 million a year. David Stern has the NBA operating at a loss of hundreds of millions a year and he's pulling down 10 million. Roger Goodell, in my opinion the best league commissioner of the bunch, also makes around 10 million. So Bettman making 7 million for a league that is now operating in the green financially isn't that bad.

True, there would always be detractors, but at least - if we use your examples of guys like Yzerman or Gretz - you would end up with true ambassadors of the game who also KNOW the game.

Some would argue the very reason bettman was brought in was his lack of knowledge of the game (and the mistakes that had been previously made) but even if i subscribe to that, I would say his usefulness has run out.

Those who are upset with Bettman need to read what the NHL was like in the days of Ziegler.

True, but just because Bettman was better than Ziegler, doesnt mean he's any damned good ;)

replacing Stalin with Khrushchev (yes I know there were 2 others inbetween, but you get my point) was an improvement - but only in some areas. ;)

And Gretzky also has that acute business sense. That last franchise he owned is doing splendid

I'm not going to comment on that because I don't know intricately Bettman's hockey knowledge either today or when he was hired. Regardless the Commissioner doesn't change the rules or impact the on-ice game that's on the players and the GM's in their committee meetings so true hockey knowledge is limited for Bettman's job other than being an Ambassador.

I'd argue a decent amount of pro-Bettman arguments, my biggest beef with him has been the TV deals as that is the main thing holding the NHL back and he presents himself badly at times as the public image for the league. However the business success, as well as the overall direction of the league has been a positive change since Ziegler IMO.

Yzerman or Gretzky would acknowledge that hockey must be brought back where it belongs. This means the Coyotes and one Eastern Conference team (could be Atlanta Thrashers, NY Islanders or Florida Panthers) both relocate.

That was on mostly the owners who wanted expansion fees, how many teams have gone South since Gary took over? I think it's like 4. The rest of them were under Ziegler and it was because of greedy owners, no matter who the Commish was.

I'm not so sure about that one. While I don't doubt that both of them have a crystal clear appreciation of what hockey means to Canadians, I doubt they'd start frantically trying to move franchises North.

Coincidentally, the two teams that they have been involved with on the management side are located in Arizona and Florida. They don't need to listen to the media hype about what cities do or don't 'deserve' teams, because they've seen first hand that even these Southern teams have fans who care about the game.

Now that's not to say that a team like Phoenix wouldn't be moved if it made smart business sense to do so. But as for those two being more likely to move a franchise than Bettman... well, you certainly didn't see Gretzky saying anything ultra-nationalistic when the Coyotes were in the middle of their court drama last year.

As a side note, I do think Gary Bettman is an arrogant jerk, but I weirldy enjoy having him as the comissionner as a result. I think he actually plays up that part of his personality in interviews and the like just to try and provoke a reaction. It's a little fun to watch :P

Who knows? Gretzky invested a significant amount of money in the Coyotes post retirement, he must have been at least somewhat convinced hockey can work there.
