Heres what I would say for now.

East

1. Washington Capitals (their division is still pretty bad)

2. Boston Bruins (bounceback year, deepest forward corps in their division)

3. Philadelphia Flyers (probably the favorite in the East)

4. Pittsburgh Penguins (4th again)

5. Buffalo Sabres (Miller + Myers will carry them)

6. New Jersey Devils (Tough division and their Defence is actually not great)

7. Tampa Bay Lightning (back to the playoffs with elite scoring lines)

8. Ottawa Senators (Just Barely, as long as they dont get a lot of injuries)

9. Montreal Canadiens (Basically the same team that made the playoffs by 1 point without Halak)

10. Carolina Hurricanes (next year they will probably be back to the playoffs, just missing this year)

11. Atlanta Thrashers (Forwards arent that great scoring-wise, but they will be in the hunt)

12. New York Rangers (Nothing for Centers, Gaborik probably doesnt repeat his monster year)

13. Toronto Maple Leafs (Slight improvement but still give up a 5-7th overall pick)

14. New York Islanders (Really weak forward lines, although their D is better)

15. Florida Panthers (Rebuilding, should trade Vokoun/Stillman near the deadline as well)

West

1 Detroit Red Wings (Cup Favourites)

2 Vancouver Canucks (Easiest Division in the West)

3 San Jose Sharks (Another good regular season)

4 Chicago Blackhawks (Lost a lot of parts but should still make the playoffs pretty easily)

5 Phoenix Coyotes (If Bryzgalov carries them)

6 Nashville Predators (Need one more gamebreaking offensive player to make them contenders)

7 St Louis Blues (Should come back with a strong blueline and some strides by their younger players)

8 Los Angeles Kings (A good team but there are so many good teams out West)

9 Anaheim Ducks (D-Corps not as strong, but should be in the hunt till the end)

10 Colorado Avalanche (Overacheived last year, another decent year but out of the playoffs)

11 Calgary Flames (May actually make the playoffs but relying on a lot of luck and past players finding magic)

12 Dallas Stars (Good forwards but their D and goaltending is below average)

13 Columbus Blue Jackets (Probably a playoff contender if they were in the East, but their D is their weakness)

14 Minnesota Wild (Re-Building some more, should unload players at the deadline)

15 Edmonton Oilers (Give them another year at least)

Feel free to agree and disagree amongst each other

probably subject to change once the year starts too ;)

East

1. Washington (their regular season hockey is really tough to beat) :(

2. Pittsburgh (Crosby, Malkin, Staal all together... it's a no brainer, except the lost Gonchar) :(

3. Buffalo (Vanek, Myers and Miller will bring the Sabres back to the top of the division)

4. Ottawa (Sens have what it needs for a longer playoff run, besides questions in goal)

5. New Jersey (Brouder is old, the team is older and quite jet-lagged physically from 1st round dissapointments)

6. New York R (The Rangers suffered injuries throughout the season, this year they are sure not to fail)

7. Philidalphia (Leighton will never be the same, it was all a lucky time for a non-star to shine, now with all of their power invested in him, it is time to fail)

8. Boston (Horton is the new guy, he's sure to make a difference, but the East will go through a major rebuild as the west has being)

9. Montreal (No Halak, No salary space- hell, let's try it!)

10. Carolina (The Canes' injuries with Eric Staal and Cam Ward were truly killers to the franchise)

11. New York I (The Isles youth sends them moving up slightly, Tavares and Niederreiter will only do so much)

12. Atlanta (Bufleigen, Sopel and other who plan to help Antropov and co. make the playoffs for only the 2nd time in team history)

13. Tampa Bay (Gange? Guy Boucher? so much of a rebuild, eh?)

14. Florida (The Panthers are only competing with the leafs for last and they lose there too.)

15. Toronto (The Maple Laughs will always be last)

If they have to trade Zubrus because Kovalchuk asks for too much money, then the Devils are worse off since they could have to sign players like Satan to fill a bottom-six hole.

And I hate to admit it but the Leafs have improved to the point where they may no longer be last in the Conference.

Devils could get fined cap space for that ridiculous contract as well according to some sources, they were 3 million over the cap anyways without a full roster too. Other than Volchenkov and Greene, their defence looks iffy, Tallinder is a decent shutdown guy but well see how he plays with a weaker D-partner, unless hes on the top line with Volchenkov.

Their goaltending is still an issue... JS is on the wrong side of 30 and has to deal with the new pad rule, while Gus is still a few years away.

I'm not too worried, they've improved, but not in leaps and bounds. They may find themselves around 10-12th in the east. Still not much of a threat.

The Pens got better on defense by signing Martin and Michalek, especially Martin will be a valuable player for them I feel. Their real problem is forward depth IMO, which is a given in the salary cap era when you have two players with a combined Cap hit of almost $18 million. Crosby and Malkin are exceptional players, everybody would love to have them on their team, but with that kind of money we're actually paying Plekanec, Cammalleri, Gionta and Pouliot. All I'm saying is the Pens don't have a very impressive offense aside from Crosby, Malkin, and Staal - they're amazing players but they need suitable wingers to play with. Statistically, their best winger would be Chris Kunitz right now. Of course you can double shift your Big Three all year, but it's going to catch up with them eventually.

That said, I like their moves on D. Martin, Michalek, Letang, and Orpik looks solid on paper plus they're all under 30.

Even though I had Toronto at 13, I dunno if theyll even get that high, goaltending is weaker than Florida, Atlanta, Carolina etc their Defence is good but their forward lines are weaker than the beginning of last year. Though Florida will probably just unload a pile of players at the deadline and try to race to the bottom to get one of the top couple picks, whereas the Leafs will play and not move anything at the deadline unless it improves their roster this season.

Dunno how anyone beats Detroit in the Western Conference this year though.

Flippula-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Franzen-Zetterberg-Bertuzzi

Hudler-Modano-Cleary

Draper-Helm-Miller

Eaves-Abdelkader(if they sign him)

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Ericsson-Salei

Kindl-Meech

Howard

Osgood

They have a million in cap space left as well so they could make some minor moves to try and get better still.

I won't post standings, but this is what I think we should look out for:

1.Detriot to struggle to make the playoffs, they havn't improved and I think Howard will get 2nd-year syndrome

2. Toronto to be dissapointing

3. Buffalo to make a statement, not just have more up-and-down years

4. Colorado to improve, they have a lot of good quick-strike forwards

5. Montreal to be healthier and therefore better

6. Chicago will own the west

7. San Jose to make the playoffs with ease and choke

8. Washington to do less well because people know how to beat them thanks to yours truly ;)

9. Fleury to bring Pitt down

10. Overall, not a whole lot will change save for a few suprises, like maybe Phoenix again and St. Louis and perhaps Carolina

Fleury had the 40th best Save % out of the 50 goalies who played at least 25 games so I dont see how he will be any worse than that.
