amazing how some Habs fans have us not making the plaoffs after last year...Gionta , Camm ,Marky all hurt for stretches last year...another year of the team knowing each other ...I've got them in 5th...have some faith

We can go as high as 5th (as per Pool Pro) but only if the bottom-liners are the only ones to get injured.

You actually have them 3rd since the top 3 seeds go to the 3 division winners and you have the Habs as the highest seed from the Northeast.

I would much rather have Monster

Toronto have a better goaltending situation, Giggy and Monster against Price and Auld, yeh

Quite possible

I keep reading how people talk about Montreal's injuries but peopke forget that other teams had injuries too .

IMO Montreal didn't do much to improve their lineup from last year

We're hoping that the team stays injury free and that after a year under JM as coach they will gel -

Well who is to say other teams will remain injury free also

Just out of curiosity, based on what? Gustavsson played well down the stretch after the Leafs were out of it but he has pretty massive flaws in his game (horrible rebound control and at times his positioning is ridiculous) but he's 3 years older than Carey and had a mediocre rookie season.

I'm not saying it's not possible their goaltending will be better, just want to get your thought process. Also lol @ Giggy

Boston Forwards:

Marc Savard

Nathan Horton

Patrice Bergeron

Milan Lucic

Tyler Seguin

David Krejci

Michael Ryder

Mark Recchi

Blake Wheeler

Some of these players had down years last season but Boston will score just fine IMO.

Toronto were very unlucky last year not to mention how many games they surrendered due to Toskala.

I see the habs as falling in 7th to 10th spot. Their MVP last year both regular season and playoffs was Jaroslav Halak, and he's gone.

Last year Price was a .912 goalie over 39 games, and Halak was a .924 goalie over 43 games started. If Price goes .912 this year over 67 games and Auld goes .900 over 15 games, and we give up 30 shots a game, we'll be giving up an extra 15.48+5.4 = 21 goals over the season, which means we could be losing 10 points in the standing. We don't just need AK46 and Pouliot to step up, we need them to step up by a lot.

I don't know about Boston. They are 3 million dollars over the cap so how can you assume those are their forwards?

It's like 7-8 points but still I agree

Valid point but the OP was questioning their forward core ATM.

Marco Sturm is on injured reserve for a while, 4 million cap hit this season should get rid of most of that problem.

Milan Lucic-Marc Savard-Nathan Horton

Tyler Seguin-Patrice Bergeron-Mark Recchi

Blake Wheeler-David Krejci-Michael Ryder

is a pretty nice top 9.

These would be my picks in the East based on how things are right now, with the percentage chance that I think that team will make the playoffs in brackets:

1. Washington (95%)

2. Boston (90%)

3. New Jersey (90%)

4. Pittsburgh (85%)

5. Philadelphia (75%)

6. Montreal (70%)

7. Ottawa (65%)

8. Carolina (50%)

9. Tampa Bay (40%)

10. Buffalo (50%)

11. Toronto (40%)

12. NYR (25%)

13. NYI (10%)

14. Atlanta (10%)

15. Florida (5%)

Based on this, a few observations that I would make:

1. Washington is again playing in the weakest division. This will help their point tally and is the reason why I think they edge out Boston for the East.

2. The Habs play in the toughest division. As much as we hate the Leafs, they are going to be a better team this year, and I think will challenge for a playoff spot. I can see any of the teams down to the NYR squeaking in, and I think it's entirely possible we see 4 teams from Montreal's division making the playoffs again this year. Even Atl and NYI have an outside shot, with Florida being for me, the only team that is a complete longshot.

3. I think a lot of people here expect TB to do well this year, and they might, but they have also made a number of changes and still lack a true number one goalie. They will also be improved, but I don't know that they get in.

4. Carolina will surprise this year. They played well down the stretch last year and while they haven't done much to improve their team, they still have some good players like Cam Ward and Eric Staal. Again, they are playing in a weak division and I think they will make a run at a playoff spot. As I said, the last few spots will be a battle, but I see the Hurricanes edging out TB and Buffalo for that last spot.

5. There are always going to be surprises. Each team up and down that list has question marks, some goaltending (Phi, Mtl, TB), some salary cap issues (Bos, NJ, Tor, Phi), some staying healthy (Bos, Car, Buf, Mtl), some depth (Pit, Was, Ott). I can see our Habs finishing anywhere from 2nd down to 13th, with a more realistic finish landing them somewhere between the 5th and 10th spots. My gut tells me they will exceed the expectations of the "experts" though, just as they did in last year's playoffs.

I love Carolina as a sleeper pick to make the playoffs, since Staal and Ward will be likely not as injured this year plus they have a ton of young talent coming up.

Even though I like the Leafs, hard to see how people have them making the playoffs even if its just 8th. They need another year of getting rid of contracts and and should be able to spend lots of money next season in free agency to get a number 1 center (Brad Richards comes to mind). They are definitely in need of a proven playmaking #1 since I really dont think Bozak/Kadri can put up more than 50 pts in a season.

No more than Kaberle could. Some people would even suggest that Kabs be their #1 playmaking center but he only has playmaking out of the characteristics of a #1 playmaker that they would need. They have enough defensive depth (although Kabs would likely be a PP scorer if placed up front) to afford to make Kabs play up front, similar to MAB back in the day.

But still... they have improved to the point where they would be outside of the lottery pick range. And we could be the ones knocking the Leafs off the playoffs for what we know.

So heres the final predictions for me

East

1. Washington Capitals (Strongest team in a weak division, though Tampa may challenge them for a while)

2. Pittsburgh Penguins (3-way divisional fight though all three teams have question marks, Malkin bounces back)

3. Boston Bruins (Should win the Northeast, in a close fight with Buffalo, even with injuries they are deep)

4. Philadelphia Flyers (Strong regular season, but goaltending costs them the division)

5. New Jersey Devils (Defense is really not that good plus they still need to get under the cap)

6. Tampa Bay Lightning (Crazy offense, easy division and their D will be enough to get them to the playoffs)

7. Buffalo Sabres (Still a good team though their division is competitive and they will be in a fight, of course Miller owns)

8. Ottawa Senators (I like Ottawa's offense to carry them just above Montreal and theyll get at least OK goaltending)

9. Montreal Canadiens (Will be in the race based on defensive play, but really dont have enough scoring IMO)

10. Carolina Hurricanes (Should be back in the playoffs next year, Very good offensive defencemen)

11. New York Rangers (Still not much for centres, though Lundqvist always keeps them around)

12. Atlanta Thrashers (Thrashers arent really good at all I think, but there are 3 teams that are just as bad)

13. Toronto Maple Leafs (Improvement but cant see them getting too far unless a centre steps up)

14. New York Islanders (They will be in a dogfight with Florida for last overall, with questionmarks all over the lineup)

15. Florida Panthers (based on them trading a lot of their players away at the deadline, Vokoun, Stillman, McCabe etc.)

West

1 Vancouver Canucks (Best team by far in the weakest division in the West)

2 Detroit Red Wings (The favorites in the West IMO)

3 San Jose Sharks (Stacked top two lines, plus I dont see LA threatening them for the division)

4 Chicago Blackhawks (Lost a lot of parts but still competitive)

5 Los Angeles Kings (There's a gap between the top 4 and the rest, but LA is the best of the rest)

6 Nashville Predators (Made it to 6th last year with a fairly bad offense, why not again? Shea Weber carries them)

7 St Louis Blues (Halak plus Pietrangelo additions put them over the top)

8 Phoenix Coyotes (I dont see them being nearly as good as last season, though still in the playoffs)

9 Anaheim Ducks (Great forwards and goaltending, but Defense seems to cost them)

10 Calgary Flames (Calgary will be about the same as last year, but might sneak in )

11 Colorado Avalanche (lost Wolski, Mueller injured, can Anderson really have another great year?)

12 Dallas Stars (Wouldn't be surprised if they made the playoffs, but mediocre defence and goaltending hurts)

13 Columbus Blue Jackets (have some decent forwards, though if Mason plays well they might surprise)

14 Minnesota Wild (Gonna be tough for Minnesota, can't see them in the playoffs without a couple more top-sixers)

15 Edmonton Oilers (Keep building through the draft, and their centers are nothing better than the Leafs/Rangers)
