Habs Sign Jeff Halpern To 1 Yr Deal

Another good signature. After an injury plegued season a depth move seems right to the point. Why leave cap space on the table instead of shoring up the ranks. It has been stated that our prospects might be robbed of ice by this signing, but I cannot agree. With the low dollars involved in this deal, I don't see Halpern as a hinderance. If any of the young players proves that they are ready to make the jump, they will likey get the shot ahead of Darche or Halpern.

If we are injury riddled at any point, this gives us a choice, rather than needing to draw a prospect who might otherwise be better off in the AHL as far as delevopement goes.

This isn't a big deal by any means, but it's a move that gains depth, which, big picture, is a big deal.

Didn't Darche sign a 2-way contract?

if so, it takes care of that problem.

There's no doubt that this is a good signing for the price he came at, but not too sure if i like this move. Like many have already expressed, that 3rd line position could have been taken by a younger player. Nonetheless, we all wish you a great and healthy season. Welcome to the habs jeff!

It's 1 way I believe but it doesn't make a difference, all a 2-way really means is he gets paid less in the AHL than in the NHL.

That's not ALL it means. It means if he gets sent down he can be claimed by another team, which I am certain you already knew. I can honestly see D'arche getting picked up by another team to join their farm team.

Edit: I see you were having a discussion with another member and I missed it all, so my reply is most likely useless, sorry lol.

Actually, Roy was right: that is all it means ;)

A two-way contract allows a player to be paid one salary for playing in the AHL and a different salary for playing in the NHL. It has nothing whatsoever to do with where the player can actually play or whther he can be claimed on waivers.

A player who has played a certain number of games in the NHL must pass waivers when being sent down to the AHL. It doesn't matter if he has a two-way contract worth $60,000/$500,000 or if he's got a one-way contract worth $5,000,000. The only difference would be that if the $5M guy DID clear waivers he'd still be paid $5M to play for Hamilton... which the Moulsons probably wouldn't be too fond of, but which wouldn't count against the Canadiens' cap.

As for this signing, like most have said it's not a huge thing but I like it for one reason: injuries.

It sucks to think that we could be bitten by that dreaded bug again this year, but it's probably going to happen at some point. When Pleky or Gomez goes down it will be nice to still have four centres in the line-up who are actually capable of playing centre.

Not to mention Halpern's faceoff skills are great, and as someone mentioned he can be confidently thrown out on the first PK wave to save the energy of guys like Pleky and Gomez. I remember the fourth line almost single-handedly costing us a few games last year, and even with these limited improvements I don't see that happening again this season.

Edit: I should also add that this move actually saves the Habs a little cap space, as he probably costs us less than whatever rookie was going to be in his place instead.

The nice thing is a lot of the guys named like Begin, Bonk or Dandenault were signed to longer term, overpriced deals.

Like I said before, this is a whatever signing but it's 1 year, it's cheap to the point that it's probably cheaper to keep him around than any prospect and he actually can fill some roles on the ice or sit in the press box.

Not much to really like but nothing to really dislike.

Exactly. Term & $$ make this a good deal. Nothing spectacular, but good solid cap management and insurance. I wonder what PG thinks about contracts like Gomez, Hamrlik etc that he inherited.

Darche is 34 yrs old

No disrepsect but if he were to get picked it wouldn't be a great loss

I've seen him play for us last year but never realized he was THAT old

I take back what i said earlier...i don't see him getting picked up.

Exactly. A 2-way contract has no impact on waivers nor does it allow a player to become waiver exempt. If Darche had a 2-way contract the waiver rules would apply to him the same way they do on his 1 way contract.

Well to be fair he was the head of pro scouting when those contracts were signed so he likely had at least some input in them and it's not as if he took over a team he had nothing to do with. His opinion obviously could have changed (as Bob's could have on them).

They're obviously both overpaid so I'm sure he's not overly thrilled but on Roman, his contract being expiring actually probably has a bit of value actually.

If you claim a guy off waivers,, i'm pretty sure he gets a roster spot on the big club. I dont beleive he can be directly assigned to the minors of another organization.

It's sort of like getting Jimmy Roberts as a UFA at a great price. These are the moves that build great teams from the top to the bottom.
