Steven Stamkos

Does anyone think Tampa Bay overpaid to re-sign Stamkos?

The guy scored 51 goals in his sophmore season, and was on pace to go over that before hitting a speed bump, hes also like 21? Hes going to be amazing...their only problem was not signing him to a longer term deal. Like Nine said hes a top 3 talent in the league.

If Stamkos at 7.5M is over paying, then what is Cammalleri at 6M? Stamkos at 7.5 is actually a steal. It's around 11.5% of the 64M cap, and Cammalleri's contract was roughly 10.5% of the 56.8M cap in 2009. So Stamkos' new contract is about one percent more relative to the cap than Cammalleri's was when it was signed. Sounds like a great deal to me.

Stamkos isn't over paying for a 50 goal scorer, but he's still an RFA I believe.

And we definitely over-payed for Cammy and Gio. Although Gio has been pretty consistent for us.

I mean, it might not be overpaying based on how he plays and scores. But, like FS said, he's a RFA. What Tampa has done is set itself up for a crazy contract when he does his UFA status. He's making 7.5 as an RFA, that's a bit much. Cammalleri @ 6M may be an over payment, but it was over payment of a free agent.

It's not too bad for an elite young player like Stamkos with back-to-back 90 point seasons.

Crosby signed for 8.7

Malkin signed for 8.7

Ovechkin signed for 9.5

All 3 signed as RFAs. Not to mention that Stamkos signed when the salary cap was higher. The only thing negative is the fact that it brings him straight to UFA status. Good news for the rest of the league if he goes to market though.

They can always extend him.

Surprisingly,,,,T.B. still has over 7 mill in cap space ( according to capgeek) with a 21 man roster. I thought they were in trouble. Guess not.

With TB, it's not cap space that's the problem, they have an internal cap from the owner, and they're right up on it.

@FirstStar, It's definitely an overpayment if you look at him as an RFA forward, but as far as what he brings to the table for the team, it's not a bad contract at all. AK brought up Ovechkin, Malkin, and Crosby's contracts, now as far as those go, I'd rather have Crosby or Malkin at 8.7 than Stamkos at 7.5, but I'd much rather have Stamkos at 7.5 than Ovechkin at 9.4M.

And with my Cammalleri comparison, I'm just saying that there don't seem to be too many people thinking that's a very bad contract, when for 1.5M more than Cammalleri the Lightning retained a premier player capable of 50 goal seasons.
