Franzen's Historic Night

Recommended Posts

I don't know how many of you have heard the news yet, but Johan Franzen of the Red Wings had a historic night, as he became one of only a handful of players in NHL history to get five goals in a game, doing so last night against Ottawa. The Red Wings won 7-5.

He is the first since Marian Garbonik to do it, in 2007.

There have been scant few guys who have scored five or more goals in a game in NHL history.

Joe Malone scored 7 for the Habs

Maurice Richard did it twice, in Game 2 of the 1944 Cup opening round against Toronto, and then against Detroit in his historic 50-goals in 50-games season. And that was the game where he moved from one apartment to another. He had 8 total points in that game.

Bert Olmstead did it in a game in the 1950s.

Daryl Sittler did it twice, including breaking Richard's total points record (5 goals, 5 assists), and then against Philadelphia in the 1976 Cup semis against Philadelphia.

Reggie Leach did it against Toronto in the 1976 Cup Semis against Toronto.

Mario Lemieux did it in a playoff game in the late 1980s.

Marian Garbonik did it in 2007.

And these may not be the only ones.
