2011 NHL Entry Draft

AK-1

Recommended Posts

I think now would be a good starting point to discuss the upcoming entry draft, scheduled for June 2011. As of now, I expect the Habs to draft 30th in the 1st round.

Here are different mock drafts garnered up by yours truly:

Habs draft D David Musil with 22nd pick.

Habs draft C Boone Jenner with 18th pick.

Habs draft LW Phillip Danault with 18th pick.

Habs draft F Seth Ambroz with 25th pick.

Here's the CSS (Central Scouting Agency) midterm rank for 2011 draft eligible prospects: http://www.nhl.com/ice/draftprospectbrowse.htm

Here's the TSN Midterm Rank of the top 60 prospects, courtesy of Bob MacKenzie: http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=36559

Interesting reads... http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=349896

So, who do you want to see the Habs draft? What should the Habs go for at the draft? Big center? Defenseman? Best player available?

I love mid-season mock drafts. The teams don't even have full scouting reports on all the players, and likely have not had any talks yet about who they want to talk, but THESE guys can do a mock draft. It's equivalent to throwing darts against the wall, and then re-arranging it to make sure MTL takes a Quebec guy in the approximate range he should go.

I've always beleived in the "Go with the best player available" method of drafting. If you have an abundance of talent in that position on your team,, then you trade for other needs.

The only exception i might consider for that rule is goaltender,, because of the length of time it takes to develop one for the NHL.

Imho habs will draft a defensemen with a late first round pick. David Musil.

If Musil is still on the board he would be a great shutdown defenceman with a little nastiness and offence.I'm still thinking that in a year where the draft is weak, there are surprises in store.Max Friberg impressed the hell out of me at the WJC's this year and could be like a late 1st rounder. This guy exudes offence and speed,he could be the biggest steal in the draft.

Depending on what the priority is BPA (Best Player Available) or by position. There are so many choices:Big,bigger, biggest that's probably the biggest thing on Habs fans minds. If not then Max Friberg could be a good choice LW 5'11 and 185lbs he's probably one of the fastest players available and has a wicked wristshot.Mark McNeill is a big center nasty and fast with talent and leadership skills 6'2 RH and 210lbs.Jamie Oleksiak 6'7 244lbs mean and nasty great defenceman.Scott Mayfield 6'3 200lbs has a touch of Larry Robinson hitting, passing and fighting in him.Like that kid Khokhlachev until Tinordi knocked him senseless Feb.11 against Windsor,he literally crawled back to the bench.Shows lots of spunk taking a hit like that and making it back to the bench alive.

I have picked the skill player I want if that's what the Habs draft Khochlachev, this kid could be the first line center we need. The Habs could have him centering AK and Avtsin in three years. If not then please get a couple of first round picks and get one of our core pieces, like Couturier or Larsson that way we as fans can envision the 25th coming.

I agree with whoever said get the best player available.

I would like to see the habs start drafting big centers and forwards in general.Especially at center. We have been small at the center position for years now and it always seems to hurt us when matching up against teams like the Flyers.

I also liked the 6 ft 7 defenseman who someone above mentioned.Another defenseman.lol.That will be the most likely scenario.

Big scoring forwards who play a really gritty game yet still have speed and good hands. Is that hard to find that late in the draft??lol.

I don't want Nugent-hopkins, i would like too see the habs draft a big/giant player either forward or defense with grit and skill. If you guys want too a see the habs win a cup soon where going to need alot more top 6 forward with size, grit and a top 4 with size and grit. By doing so its start from drafting.

Mark McNeill: Good canadian boy (Don cherry lol), position C, 6'2, 210

David Musil: position D, 6'3 191

Seth AmBroz: position RW, 6'2 211

Their are tons of big skilled gritty players at the habs draft spot and thats what I want to see habs draft.

I'm fine with those picks. We need to write a letter to PG.lol.Especially that Mark McNeill.

What do you guys think of drafting Andrew Fritsch from the Owen Sound Attack.I've been following him for the past few years he grew up next door to my wife in Brantford.

He has a bit of size 6 foot and 190 at I believe 18 years old. He's a LW and has over a point a game right now I believe 58 pts in 52 games played.

Thoughts?

That Oleksiak kid sounds great, has a lower rating according to bleacher report I'd take him, Him and Tinordi would be a great pair eh :P

I think we have alot of depth right now at center, leblanc, avtsin, nattinen, desharnais, white i believe can play center....I think we should focus on getting a winger with offensive upside (something I feel we NEED) or a big defenceman....a big winger with a mean streak would be nice too if possible.

We have depth at center but not the right kind of depth.Thats the problem.Much like our current top 6 forwards we need to balance it out with bigger skilled grittier players.

Too bad we don't have Sam Pollock as GM anymore. Our depth is we have lots solid two way players and small skilled players. We lack top prospects and young big, gritty skilled players.

There are quite a few forwards that can fill the bill in this draft Big skilled centers in abundance.Khochlachev looks like a premier stickhandling centerman on the small side but has proved that he can take a hit and keep going.

What the Habs need to do this draft is to pick the BPA at positions that we need Alex Grenier(Remparts)Mark McNeill(Prince Albert) Phillippe Hudon (Choates) Duncan Siemens (Saskatoon)Jamie Oleksiak Jarrod Rabey (Indiana)that's six draft picks.Goalie I'd choose is James Mello (Dartmouth)in case we can't get those there are always Seth Ambroz (USHL) Colin Jacobs (Seattle)JT Miller (USNDT) Connor Murphy (Injured)defence 6'3 197 Scott Mayfield (Phantoms USHL) there are lots of good players that can fill the needs one last guy Russian Alex Khokhlachev (Windsor)and if there is a chance take a chance on Maxim Shalunov 6'3 187lbs LW wiz kid.Go Pierre Gauthier and Trevor Timmins make us scream with joy on the streets of Canada the praises of the Montreal Canadiens Scouting Staff.Sean Couturier maybe worth pursuing now that he has dropped to eighth and falling you just never know until you know.

I'm sure the habs will make the right call this entry draft and hopefully choose one of these players.

I suggested Max ShalunovLW and Khokhlachev Center another late pick that has chemistry with our Avtsin in Hamilton is Nikita Dvurechevsky LW those guys at least two a Center and a LW any of these guys with Avtsin would make a good Russian line.

Thanks I'm just a hockey nut and while recovering from surgeries I've had oodles of time to sit and bone up.Namestnikov and Harrington could be another couple of picks available,Harrington being Tinordi's defence partner could be available in the 3rd round and Namestnikov might fall enough for the Habs to get him.He plays with Tinordi in London and has played extremely well so he may be gone by the time the Habs pick.

Jamie Oleksiak 6'7 240

Talent Anaylis: Oleksiak is a defenseman that possesses a really nice blend of size, physicality and outstanding puck skills. While much has been said of his size and physical side, what is most impressive about Oleksiak is his superb agility and athleticism. He moves remarkably well for such a big man, skating with long, fluid strides. He also maintains very good balance on his skates as well.

He would like great with Tniordi in 3-4 years. A gaint puck moving defensemen with offensive skill with another tought giant defensive D man.

Yep, this is who we should pick
