A really really poor trade if you asked me while our rivals are aiming for big ammo. He was rightfully let off the hook by the team after last seson, so what the heck is he doing here again?

The explanation here is that the management sees us as cup-worthy in the next few seasons but not this one, so there's no need to sacrifice the future for what they consider somewhat of a lost cause. And you know what, I kinda agree with their philosophy because we would be a lot better without all the injuries and with more experience on our young players.

I'm not saying we should pack up and quit this season, because we have a pretty good shot in playoffs, but there's no question we'll have a better team next season and the season after that. So I'd rather if we didn't go after any big guns like the other guys are doing.

A surprise yes... however two things that could have come into play here: 1) He is familiar with the Habs "System" and they are familiar with him; 2) After a dissapointing showing last time around he should be inspired to right the wrong (but can he?).

An added bonus perhaps... he is a player with size/toughness, experience and a very decent point shot.

The Beard is back! Hahahahahaha.

Anyways, I don't mind this deal too much, I think there may be more to the Gill or Spaceck situations that could keep them off the roster for a bit and he brings a bit of experience to our already young blue line.

His contract isn't that bad either (under 1 million) so it's not much of a hit to the team.

You would think the habs organization would learn something from this season, our team is much much much better because of players like, pacs, pouliot, subban, weber, deshernais, white they have been given a chance to play thats why.....i cannot imagine there is not one dee in hamilton who can give us as much as Mara and also add NHL experience to their resume.

It's not that there's no D in Hamilton who can be given a chance, it's that we've called them all up already :P

Seriously though, I totally support giving young players a chance, but we have a ton of young guys from Hamilton throughout the line-up at the moment and our defense core is scary young right now.

Agreed, we have Weber and Picard up with the big team already. Now we called up the third rookie with Brandon Nash while Spacek and Gill are nursing injuries. We're extremely thin on defence right now and if another guy goes down or some players aggravate their injuries, we'd be in real trouble come playoff time. I wouldn't even know whom to call up from Hamilton ... Carle? Festerling? Klubertanz? Henry? Looks like an insurance move for a 5th rounder to add a bit of experience on the backend.

I actually had relatively high hopes when we acquired Mara last season because I had seen him play quite a bit with the Rangers. Unfortunately he looked pretty terrible at the beginning of the year when our newly assembled team was trying to find some kind of identity before he missed the entire season with a shoulder injury. I hope he can bounce back and give us some stability like he did for a few years in NY, although he hasn't really played in the NHL since December.

Another thing worth noting is that Mara was never afraid of defending his teammates. I remember him jumping Kaleta after he took a run at Plekanec and he did the same thing against Edmonton last year IIRC. He's not a goon/enforcer by any means but he definitely stands up for his teammates, which is something we can probably use from time to time. I rather Mara drops the gloves than Subban, that's for sure ;)
