"Wow what a great morning. Great to be on the ice as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. This city is electric. Can't wait for tonight" Brent Sopel on twitter

“I played with Brent way back in L.A., and I actually think that he’s changed his game quite a bit since then. He used to have more of a role on the power-play, but now he’s become more of a wily shot-blocker, which is something that we need on the penalty-kill right now,” said Cammalleri. “He’s definitely a character and a great guy with a unique personality – I can already tell he’s going to fit in perfectly in this room.” Feb 26, 2011 canadiens.com

Hab fans will be pleasantly surprised with Sopel he can run a PP and PK.Watched him play for the Canucks for a few years and he's a good defenceman.Pierre got a sweet deal getting Brent, welcome to the playoff bound Montreal Canadiens.

He's great on the PK but running the PP? He averaged 15 seconds of PP TOI/G in Atlanta this year as well as 7 and 5 seconds of PP TOI/G with the Hawks in the two previous seasons. I think we have guys who are better suited to that role on our roster already.

Well both those teams have better options on D for the PP as do we most likely.

having seen this guy play with the hawks all lot i won't be specific cause those games are out of the corner of my eye, but to my mind he is consistently value added while on the ice, which is a step up over maxwell and i leave it to someone else to do the age and salary comparisons. i like the deal.

dumb move. maxwell has not been given one chance in this organization. i bet maxwell has a better carreer then eller.

I'd bet against that.

I think Maxwell will play in the NHL at some point, but he doesn't have Eller's raw skills. I don't know if Eller will flourish, but I think the odds are in favor of him having a better career than Maxwell when all is said and done and I could similarly argue that Dawes could end up being better than Maxwell, so that argument goes both ways. The trade involved young players, so it's a gamble both ways.

good' were on

mark this page and see you in 5 years thats al i will need, maybe 3, maxwell numbers in the ahl were the same as ellers at a younger age. he was extremely mishandled by the habs. and basically lost a year of development by being on the practice squad at the nhl level. his play was no worse than ellers EVER at the nhl level but because he was not part of a blockbuster trade he did not receive any icetime. ben maxwell will get more points at the \nhl level next season than lars eller. and if he gets to play with atlanta over the last 20 plus games maybe as much as eller this season.

raw skills?

just because eller was drafted in the first round and maxwell was drafted in teh second does not mean he has more raw skills..................see pk subban - second round > see mike komisarik first round

He's good on the PK so I suppose he's the Gorges replacement. Rumor was that we were after Phillips and I suppose this was a logical fall back (I'd actually prefer Sopel given the potential cost to get Phillips).

Not in love with the move, but not unhappy either.

Not to get too far off topic, but this has nothing to do with where they were drafted. Eller has a lack of finish at the net presently, but Maxwell didn't do much either in his few chances here. But Eller has better size, better puck protection, and a better vision of the ice. I think his defensive game is also ahead of what maxwell's was when he first came up, which is one reason Ben never managed to stick around. I'm not saying Maxwell won't score some points if he gets the chance on a top line, but overall, Eller's game is more complete and I think he'll have the better career. To me, the Sopel trade was a win for the Habs, since we acquired an asset that will help us and flipped a guy who had no future here for a guy who might have better luck in our organization.

More like the Weber replacement IMO. He plays the right side. I would have preferred Phillips over Mara, but the cost factor is/was the problem I would think.

Does anyone know how many minutes he was logging in Atlanta on average? I'm just curious if he's a guy who can 25 minutes a night, or if he usually plays closer to 17 or 18 minutes. Anyone know?

Atlanta's been using him right around the 17-18 minute mark on average, as per this:

Through 59 games, NHL has his TOI per game at 16:25. So, I'm thinking the latter.

Edit: Didn't refresh to see your post habs_93 :P

(12 minutes later lol)
