Guest habs1952
I just heard a news report here in Kitchener that Sidney Crosby's parents have asked him to quit hockey. They most undoubtedly are concerned about his concussion. I wonder if his concussion is actually worse than what we initially believed?

He came back from an unprotected, surprising hit too soon IMHO & got nailed again. I think he'll be back for the playoffs.

habs_93
There's an awful lot of dubious stuff that comes out of the Toronto media syndicate, so I don't really know. I'm not so sure I believe it 100%, but I think it's not unlikely. I think he potentially may be done for a while, maybe into next season or beyond. But I sincerely hope not. He's a great player and a good guy. What a shame it would be to see such a talented player quit the game he loves because the supposedly professional league he plays in continually refuses to protect its players, superstar talent level or not, from cheapshot artists and goons that can barely skate. Forever_Habs10
Sidney Crosby: Agent denies Crosby retirement rumors Sidney Crosby - C - PIT - Mar. 11 - 6:09 pm et Sidney Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, strongly denied the rumor that one of Crosby's family members has asked him to retire. Brisson was responding to an allegation made by Bob McCown of the Fan 590 in Toronto. "With twitter and social media, people get carried away," said Brisson. "It's irresponsible. This report (on Crosby) is baseless. At no time has retirement ever been discussed." Brisson went onto add that Crosby is doing much better, although we still wouldn't count on Crosby playing again this season. Forever_Habs10
Apparently Fan 590′s Bob McCown claimed that Crosby’s family is trying to convince him to retire because of the concussion issues that derailed what could have been the best individual season of his already impressive career. While concussions can be serious enough to end a career prematurely, Darren Dreger refuted the claim via Crosby’s agent Pat Brisson. Brisson said that Crosby’s parents have been “extremely encouraging and supportive” and they will never feed any negative pulse to such a passionate mind.” So, from the sound of the things, you can relax about Crosby retiring at this point. It’s not crazy to wonder if his family is concerned about his health – and maybe someone in the Crosby clan is whispering the word “retirement” in someone’s ear – but it’s no time to panic. Naturally, we’ll keep you updated if anything changes or something concrete surfaces. If nothing else, it’s at least a momentary distraction during a day when frivolous hockey talk can be a valuable escape.

McCown never said "parents" which is I think where all the confusion is coming from. On Prime Time Sports today he said all he knows is one person in his family who is not his parents suggested that given what he's already accomplished and the money he's earned, he shouldn't risk his health and retire. I trust he's not just making this up, but who knows who the family member is, I'm guessing an Aunt or Uncle or something.

They do have a point I'll give him that, but its up to Sid...if sid feels he can play then he should. I feel he'd be better off playing, a heck of a player. I feel he'd be better off playing, a heck of a player. The thing is though, concussions tend to get more serious as you have more of them. I doubt he'll retire - assuming he has a choice, you never know with concussions - but it isn't unreasonable to think he'd rather just take what he has and runs rather than risk becoming a walking zombie. The liklihood of this may be reinforced if your the NHL's top player [read "have a red target on your jersey"] and you hear idiots like Burke and Bettman talking about how brain injuries are just a part of the game. Again, I doubt it happens, but logically it could make sense for his future.
THEBIGGESTHABSFAN123
He's been skating and from the videos I saw he's back with his skills. He might come back for the playoffs. He's really young so I doubt he will retire. In school my class was doing a biography presentation on any person you pick.I chose Sidney(simply because he's my favorite hockey player). From what I learned the kid started playing hockey since he was a toddler.I doubt he'll agree to retire until he's over 40. kinot-1
I read an article tonite on concussions, (I don't know how to provide links but if you google "hockey players concussions" and read the Toronto Star version, this is in the article, dated Dec. 23, 2007. "Research by the Star has found at least 30 players whose careers were ended by concussion – or in large part due to concussion – since 1996, when the issue was given more attention after the early retirement of Brett Lindros. But Colin Campbell, the NHL's executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, believes that number is inflated. "Some are legitimate," said Campbell. "I think some you might find aren't legitimate. ... I think there's a small percentage, not a great percentage, of players who use it as an excuse, `Oh yeah, I've got a concussion.' They can milk it. It's a hard thing to really say that you haven't, you know, if you're trying to get some extra insurance money out of it to get paid an extra year or something." UNBELIEVABLE!!!! As well as "Just ask Eric Lindros. Keith Primeau. Pat LaFontaine. Adam Deadmarsh. Nick Kypreos. To name a few." If it can happen to Lindros, and Lafontaine (stars) Primeau and Deadmarsh (second line centers) and Kypreos 3rd or 4th liner, it can happen to Sid. powerplay2009
Crosby retiring is ridiculous to me. Of course, his parents probably want him to quit. He has money, and if that were you're kid you saw almost die(at least, if you were a parent almost die), of course you would want him to quit. For coming back this year, Pittsburgh is in a similar that we are concerning Pacioretty. We can use him in the playoffs to become more of a contender, but we probably shouldn't risk losing him for the future 5 years at least. And IMO Pittsburgh is a contender. They have a great coach and a will to win. They have proved this year that they are legitimate without Crosby and even Malkin. Each of the last 4 seasons (2007 to 2010), they have been between 95 and 105 points. They were 4th(as they are this year) 3 of those 4 years. Performance wise, nothing has changed. They win. Its just the how that's different.
CANADIENS27
Given the fact he may have gotten two concussions, no one will ever know, and his latest setback, retirement is a real possibility.
