MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of free agent left winger Alain Berger to a three-year contract (2011-12 to 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Berger registered 52 points (29 goals and 23 assists) in 65 games this season with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Oshawa Generals. Fourteen of his goals were scored on the power play and one while shorthanded. He added 86 penalty minutes and displayed a +19 plus/minus differential. The 20-year old forward has registered five points (4 goals, 1 assist) thus far in six playoff contests.

"It happened really fast. My agent called this morning to tell me we had an offer and this afternoon Pierre called to congratulate me on signing," described Berger, who will hit the ice for Game 2 of his team's second round series against the Niagara Ice Dogs on Friday night. "I’m really excited to be a part of the organization and it hasn’t really sunk in yet, but there’s no time for celebrating – we have a playoff game tomorrow night so that’s all I’m focusing on right now."

In two complete seasons with the Generals, the 6’4’’, 209 lbs forward, hailing from Burgdorf in Switzerland, totaled 85 points (48 goals, 37 assists) with 142 penalty minutes in 109 games.

Berger also played with Bern of the Swiss National League A and with the Neuchatel Young-Sprinters of the Swiss National League B, in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

"I’ve been following the Habs for a while since [Mark] Streit played there and now with Yannick Weber in Montreal, the Canadiens are pretty big in Switzerland," said Berger. "I know them both a little bit from home. I know the NHL is still a ways off for me, but it’s great to be a part of the organization."

Sorry if this was posted somewhere else, I didn't see it if it was and you can remove this thread if there's a duplicate.

6'4, 209lbs, not bad of a signing. Low risk, potential high reward.

Scouting Report

Strengths: Drives the net hard, is willing to go to stand in front. Has an above average wrist shot and will drop the gloves on occasion when required.

Weaknesses: His skating isn't quite up to par for the OHL level while his physical play could use improvement.

Projected Role: Future physical bottom 6 forward

6'4" hmmm PG must not have met him yet

Or maybe just maybe... The fact he had to look up to speak to him(instead of looking straight or even down talking to our current roster) clouded his judgment and he signed solely on his stature.

PG,"big kid... quick, get me a pen and a contract..."

PG's gopher(in the voice of Smithers), "but sir... Don't you want to see him play first... Or at least his stats?"

PG, "he's big... That's good enough for me, sign him... quick get him a jersey!".

*don't mind me... Long day at work, brain feeling very mushy, kind of in a silly mood*

Big forward. Like the idea of some big forwards in the system. Sounds like his game in the playoffs has been good. Not everyone is a fast skater in the NHL. I think that at times speed is overrated. I would just like a big forward to screen the other goalie and defensively get the puck out at the point. I don't care if Berger is a fighter. The size should help him in the AHL and possibly the NHL.

I don't know a thing about this guy other than what I read here, but the scouting reports "Weaknesses and Projected Role"don't seem to go along with his stats.

I'd like to have a team full of players with those numbers. He was even in on a shortie, how slow can he be. I sure like his size and apparent willingness to go to the net. We should know all about him soon, now that he is a Hab.

Well, if you look at most bottom 6 forwards in todays NHL alot of them put up close to PPG numbers as over-agers in junior, so the projection probably isn't that far off. (Have a look at Tom Pyatt's junior stats as an example).

Having said that, I have absolutely zero problem with these kind of deals. They cost nothing and you never know when you'll get a diamond in the rough. At the worst, you add depth/competition to the farm team.

I wonder if Alain Berger will be called up during the playoffs to give the Habs fresh legs with presence.Any way you cut it this signing can only be good for the organization. When I seen him play and fight #11 reminded me of Yvon Lambert, just a little bigger left winger.

Not a chance

You do realize he plays for the Oshawa Generals who are in the midst of their own playoffs
