Congratulations Winnipeg, that's great news, more NHL hockey in Canada. I'd really like to see them called the Jets again, I love that name and logo.

Congratulations to Winnipeg for finally getting a team back.

I would think whoever owns the rights to the Jets logo, might decide,,,,,,or they might have a contest,,,,,Name the Franchise.

Congrats Winnipeg!

I know at least one mod who will be thrilled! :D

The only question now is... What will they be called?

Happy to know we got another team back in Canada. It'll be a hellish travel wise for them, until the league re-shuffles the divisions.

Me too... I still have a puck with the Jets logo on it. Got it back in the day when gas stations use to give out gifts for 20 litres +. I think it was shell or Ultramar, maybe sergaz (wow, haven't heard that name in ages).

Anywho, really happy for the city of Winnipeg... Don't do like the Ottawa fans and drop them as soon as the weather looks stormy.

The Gretzky deal kinda killed the Jets-they originally were happy to have him out of their division. But the Gretz deal killed them financially... They could no longer compete with money making teams.

Now with the cap it levels the playing field(somewhat-financially). The winters are brutal in Winnipeg, don't know why that should be an issue for NHLers (hockey is played in cold temperatures-it's a winter sport! ), but it is a concern. Always seemed odd playing summer hockey here in Montreal (Dollard), coming out sweating and dragging my hockey equipment in 30 degree weather. <_<

I find it interesting the the Atlanta Thrashers were sold and moved in a matter of months,,,but Phoenix keeps hanging around like a millstone around the NHLs Bettmans neck.

Well Glendale is covering a large portion of the losses and anyway, there's no where else to take a team right now.

I thought that was in part to Phoenix being tied to the arena, and would mean big losses for both. Atlanta is a tennant to their arena as is the NBA team, and is easier to move out of their arena. Plus there didn't seem to be any serious offers around Atlanta, Phoenix had people trying to buy the team, just didn't do it right or backed out.

Or at least thats how I understand most of it.

Need an arena.

Phoenix needs:

-A fanbase

-Owners

-Money

-Pretty much better demographics

They Have:

An Arena

-200 loyal fans

-Gary Bettman

-A team

Quebec City Needs:

-A new arena (they have an old one that could be used until a new ones built but it would suck)

They have:

-A better employment rate than Montreal

-Money

-Fans

-An owner willing to buy the team

Well it's not that simple but anyway Phoenix has a city willing to cover most of their losses, that's the biggest factor which you didn't mention. Quebec doesn't and they would lose money in that old, small, dumpy arena.

If there were shovels in the ground ALREADY working on the new arena it maybe a different story. Anyway, when you move a team there's a big initial boom, and a new team uses that to sustain themselves for the first 5+ years of their existence, it would kind of be wasted in Quebec without a new building. It just wouldn't make sense to go to Quebec right now.

I understand, I always figured if they had to move early it would be 1 or 2 years before the arena is built, to make sure they dont miss out on that as you said Boom in interest. Look at Winnipeg right now, everyones going nuts and partying so you know their gonna sell out for at least every game the first year and sell a ton of merchandise. But if Quebec were to move now, it could be plausible to see it happen but in a business sense would be better to move a year or 2 before the new arena if you MUST. If not wait until the arena is built. I just kind of argued your point to point out that they COULD move, not that they should.
